Conundrums and Contemplations
Things that make you go hmmmmm....
This list is spoilerific, and none of my theories are canon, F.Y.I.
WA1:
Why are there no African-Filgaians? If there were any, what happened to
them?
Probably they interbred with the other humans until their genotype
disappeared. After all, the Baskar are the only human ethnic group left on
Filgaia, and they've been almost totally isolated for 1,000 years.
How does Rudy transport the entire party on one pair of skates?
I dunno, but there must be Dream Chasers stacked up like the Busch Gardens
waterskiers! (He still can't hold a candle to Stahn from "Tales of
Destiny," who manages to get SIX adventurers and
their gear into the top half of a bunk bed).
What do all the people eat, when there are only
two agricultural villages (Surf and Baskar)?
My hubby thinks they must eat the monsters! (Pass the Wojonoid?)
Speaking of Surf, why is it called that when it's
nowhere near the water?
...And why do they raise horses, when no one rides them?
...And how exactly could you harvest berries with bombs without destroying your
rootstock? (Or maybe they did destroy the rootstock, which could
explain why the Berries/Carrots/Apples are so rare! As the Elws would say,
"typical lazy, short-sighted humans!").
If Filgaia is an Earth colony, why did the settlers bring rats, moles and
seagulls, of all things? Was someone homesick for vermin?
...And how do the seagulls survive with all the monsters?
Maybe they don't taste good.
And where did all the monsters come from anyway?
Either the Guardian Blade disaster mutated a bunch of lifeforms, or Alhazad's
been one very busy demon. Or both...
Why does Guardianism have some outwardly
"Christian" elements (crosses on graves, vestments that look like
nuns' habits)?
If Filgaia was an Earth colony, it doubtless had several human religions
represented at first. People started converting to Guardianism because
they could actually SEE and TALK TO the Guardians, and over time Guardianism
subsumed aspects of the Earth religions within it.
If ARMS are so rare and all, why is the ammo so
cheap?
The Elws destroyed all the ARMS and spare parts they could find before they
left, but they left the ammo alone because it was useless without a gun to fire
it. So cases and cases of ammo have been excavated.
So how do the BDS members make a living?
They're subsidized by the ARMS Meisters.
Why are Wind Rats so interested in acquiring
money, and what do they spend it on?
Why does magic work?
Because of the presence of the Guardians. Human "Crest" magic
is utterly dependent on the four elemental Guardians and wouldn't work too far
from Filgaia. Other species have their own systems, and some species are
intrinsically magical.
Why doesn't Mother teleport out of the sinking Photosphere with the Quarter
Knights?
Due to their bulk, the hive-queens either
can't teleport or have a very, very limited range. They have a hard time
regenerating, too.
So why didn't they rescue her?
They presumed she was dead (and Zeikfried was actually hoping she was)!
What's with Luceid/Lucied and all this gender-swapping?
I've got a theory that this Guardian's female aspect is Luceid, male aspect is Lucied, neutral (true) aspect is Lucide. This Guardian's worshippers petition whichever aspect they believe will be most sympathetic to their request(s). (I noticed while making notes for this that if you take "luc"="light" and "cide"="kill," you get a name with the connotation "to kill the light." How appropriate for a Dark Guardian!).
Why does Rudy wear a Band-Aid?
Maybe he cuts himself shaving...?
If the Holmcrosses were based on the Metal Demons, why don't they have any
special Demon powers like teleportation or flight?
Two possible answers to that:
1. Rudy was based on the low-status
worker or soldier demons, who don't have any special powers; or
2. the demons' powers are magical, and Rudy's creator didn't
know magic at all.
Or both. Emma says Rudy "looks like was made by a human," and
humans don't have a reputation for combining magic and technology. The
low-caste demons would've been FAR easier to capture and hold prisoner, since
the nobles would either teleport away, or if genuinely trapped, commit suicide
to "come back" to their home base.
WA2:
WA3:
Why are your horses immune to status changes? And why don't monsters ever eat them?
What happened to most of the characters' parents (other than
Werner, Berlitz and Elliott Enduro)? Was there a plague or something with
a high fatality rate?
Why do towns have so few people in them? Let's face it--Baskar is doomed,
with only two women of possibly child-bearing age and no minors other than
Shane.
How exactly is Lombardia different from the Wyverns and Fafnir
dragons?
Why is Zeikfried/Siegfried wearing blue now, when he always wore royal purple in
WA1? This can't be simple mistranslation.
