"Love and War" notes  -- please keep in mind, this is an alternative-universe prequel to WA1, and these pages are ALSO for people who've never played it.  So if you're a Filgaian veteran, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence by belaboring the obvious.

The Good Guys:

ELW

Highly skilled with magic and technology, these pacifist vegetarians pursue harmony with nature and balance in all things.  Their largest settlements are near their Pyramid teleportation devices.  They are renowned healers.  They are able to "bond with nature" to extend their lifespans and are immortal unless killed.  Some of the humans have turned against the Elw, believing they are keeping the secret of immortality to themselves.

Elw appear human except for their dog-like ears (which can be droopy and hound-like, upright and pointy, or even folded like a Jack Russell terrier's).

BTW, in my universe, the plural of Elw is Elw.

GUARDIANS

True immortals, the Guardians draw their life-force from their element or sphere of control.  Their presence makes Crest magic and Zoa magic possible.  They are at the height of their power and have had an enormous population explosion since the humans arrived.  Four of the young Guardians have tied their life-force to human emotions, and these four Guardians are manifesting unheard-of powers.  Some of the humans have started referring to the Guardians as "gods" and worshipping them, although the Guardians never asked this of them.  The Guardians have always used their powers to help Filgaia as a whole thrive and prosper.

Notes for the AU:  My Luceid is very different from the canonical one; Equitess hasn't been born yet; and Duras Drum governs craftsmanship and shaping, not illusion.

HUMANS

The "neosapiens" arrived from Earth in sleeper ships five to seven generations ago.  Humans are relatively short-lived but adaptable.  They are not as technologically advanced as the Elw.  A few of them are learning Crest or Zoa magic.  (Magic did not and does not exist on Earth).  Rudimentary genetic tinkering leads to occasional odd hair or eye colors.  Humans are aggressive, feisty, and prone to intraspecies conflict.  There have been arguments and skirmishes since they landed between the Guardianists and the followers of various Earth religions.  Contact with Earth has long since been lost, although distant colonies survive -- much, much too far away to help out when Filgaia is invaded.

WIND RATS

These natives of Filgaia have a nose for business and a liking for opulence.  They have two forms -- their normal one, which has to be used for breathing, eating and sleeping; and a mist form, which can hover, fly short distances, carry light objects, and resist physical damage.  A very few of them can attain a third "spirit" form for a brief time.  Like most other long-lived races, they breed very slowly.  Males are blue and females pink, and there are many kinds of ear and tail types.  Wind rats are accomplished thieves and con artists.  They are good with technology but cannot use magic.
Pers

The Neutral Guys:

GOLEMS

Eight of these ultimate weapons were built by the Alliance.  They may well have been the deciding factor in the Demon War.  They are different from the Holmcrosses in that their programming can override their free will.

HOLMCROSSES

These sentient humanoid weapons emerge fully-grown from their pods on the Yggdrasil.  They can synchronize with any ARM.  Unfortunately, they are amoral and just as likely to attack the Alliance as to defend it.  They are neuter and more robotic-looking than shown here.
Rudy

The Bad Guys:

METAL-DEMONS

An alien hive-races that invades Filgaia.  You can learn all about their Morphology here.  Of note, my Alhazad is very different from the canonical one.

MONSTERS

Filgaia is ultimately home to more kinds of monsters than can be detailed here.

Terms:

ARM -- a particularly powerful gun that requires its user to telepathically synchronize with it.  An ARM will not fire at all if the person cannot synchronize.  This is an innate ability that cannot be taught or acquired;  one is either born with it or not.  A few humans and most Metal-Demons can do this.

In my universe, "ARM" is short for "Armament," as they are neither "Ancient" nor "Relics."      Back to Holmcrosses.
Crest Magic -- spells that rely on binding two "Elemental Crests" to a "Crest Graph."  This is much, much faster than performing a ceremony to invoke the Guardians' powers.  Crest magic is only used by humans and is a closely-guarded seccret by its practicioners.  Other races have their own forms of magic.  Crest magic can draw on the Guardians' power whether they like it or not.
Back to Humans or Guardians.
Zoa Magic -- Summoning one or more Guardians, or drawing on their powers directly.  Elw magicians excel at this.  Guardians can refuse to allow their powers to be used, however.
Back to Humans or Guardians.
Yggdrasil -- a biomagical tree that the Alliance wanted to use to restore life-forms in areas devastated by the war.  It could be programmed to produce all kinds of life-forms, including humans, Elw, animals and Holmcrosses.  (Yes, that IS different from the Yggdrasil tower in WA3).     Back to Holmcrosses.

People:

Bethany Adlehyde -- still working on it...
Jonathan Dhee -- yes, in my universe he's "Jonathan" and not "John."  He's also African-Filgaian and a natural showman.  He likes to make his spells seem more complicated and flashy than they really are and loves to be the center of attention.  He's a bit arrogant and wary of other people because he believes they're trying to pry the secrets of Crest Sorcery out of him.
Back to humans.

Mariel -- Vassim's sister.  Not changed at all from the WA1 plotline.    Back to Elw.
Oliver II of Arctica -- King, unfortunately.  Proves the saying "there's no fool like an old fool."  Spends his days in drunkenness and dissipation.  He likes the ladies, and there'll be hordes of illegitimate claimants to the throne once he's gone.    Back to humans.
Pers -- Windrat advisor to Bethany Adlehyde.  He's much of the brains behind the Alliance's military strategy (not that the humans will admit it).  He wears a high-tech headset that links to Alliance computers and acts as a communication device.
Back to Wind Rats.

Rudy -- experimental prototype Holmcross built to resemble a male human baby as closely as possible.  His creators wanted to see whether a loving upbringing would change his nature.  (Of course, he's not named Rudy until the events of WA1).
Back to Holmcrosses.
Vassim -- Elw technomage.  Anything more would be a spoiler.  :)     Back to Elw.
