The Biloxi Trip: Part Nine

As we continued westward from Long Beach, we finally entered the town of Pass Christian, Mississippi (which was oft-mispronounced in national news reports and still is!). At the western end of the town along Highway 90 you normally come to the bridge to Bay St. Louis. Normally…

However there is now (and for the foreseeable future) a road closure while they repair the bridge’s damage from Hurricane Katrina.

The only route to Bay St. Louis and beyond from that point had to be taken via I-10 so I decided to turn around and make our way through Pass Christian north to get there. This gave me the opportunity to take some photographs of a very unique home that we just passed.

My inlaws informed me later that they have always referred to this home as the “Castle House” for obvious reasons. Nancy and I were already calling it that before they informed us. Sometimes the obvious is the most apt choice.

I know absolutely nothing about the history of this home but I imagine it must have an interesting past. I also imagine it was most likely built pre-1950′s and survived Hurricane Camille in 1969. So hopefully whomever ends up with it will restore it. I didn’t see any “For Sale” signs so I assume whomever owned it before Hurricane Katrina still owns it. On the very slim chance that someone reading this blog entry of mine may know, please email me any info you have concerning the history of this home. I would genuinely like to know.

An American Flag In Front of the “Castle House” – Pass Christian, Mississippi – June 10, 2006
This tattered and worn American flag was in the front yard of the Castle House when we were there. In the background is a notice of “no trespassing.” I didn’t. The photos I took of the “Castle House” were all from the car we were in while sitting on a side road.

While working our way north through Pass Christian, we saw so much devastation and damage. Although earlier photos, including the ones above, highlighted the more fancy, expensive homes owned by the rich, many more were homes of just regular folks who are all still struggling. Please all of them in your thoughts and prayers. And if you will, click on one of the links on the left side of my humble blog that will send you to a relief agency still asking for donations.
