In Memoriam: Joe Mack Hancock (1928-2008)

One Tuesday, I mentioned that the blog would be on hiatus until today. I also mentioned I would reveal the reason why it was temporarily ceased. The reason is that on Monday, March 31st at approximately 11:30am CDT, my father-in-law, Joe Hancock, passed away at the Lakeview Nursing Center in Gulfport, Mississippi. He had suffered a stroke (maybe two) a couple of months ago and had been in the hospital or a long-term care center near the hospital before he was well enough to move to Lakeview. He has only been there for a little over a week when he died.

The funeral service was held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport on Thurday, April 3rd followed by a brief gravesite service with a Marine honor guard performing taps and a flag presentation. It was a moving service with well over 200 family and friends attending. Joe was a Marine during World War II stationed in the Pacific Theater and apparently saw a lot of action. He never cared to talk about it but it was obvious that he served his country honorably. His obituary reads as follows:
Joe Mack Hancock, age 79, of Gulfport passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 in Gulfport.
Mr. Hancock attended Pearl River High School and Gulfport High School. After graduating, he attended Perk Junior College. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mr. Hancock proudly served his country in the United States Marines during World War II. While in college, he started in construction with J.A. Jones. He owned and operated Barrett Cleaners, Monogram Shop, and Import/Export.
Mr. Hancock is preceded in death by his parents Curtis D. Hancock, Sr. and Alice McMurphy Hancock; his brothers, C.D. Hancock, Jr. and Don Stark Hancock.
Survivors include his loving wife, Ann B. Hancock of Biloxi; his daughters, Nancy McCaskey and her husband Carl of Tallahassee, FL and Patricia “Tsh” Hancock of Gulfport; his siblings, Mildred Johnson, Betty Lou Holder, James Hancock, Phillip Hancock all of Long Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Gulfport at 2:00 p.m. with visitation from 12:30 p.m. services. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd., is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.
Anyway, we stayed with my mother-in-law throughout the week helping out as much as we could. She has many friends and family in the area so even though we had to come back to Tallahassee, she will have people nearby if she needs something. Please keep her in your prayers and thoughts.
