Fuel Prices Increasing Due To Hurricane Ike

UPDATE:A couple of fuel stations managed to get fuel delivered on Sunday and their prices ranged from $4.09 to $4.39 a gallon. Most are still without any fuel and will get deliveries during the week.

I should have forseen this since the exact same thing happened just before Hurricane Katrina hit back in 2005. I was driving to work Friday afternoon and immediately noticed on the outskirts of town the extremely long lines for gasoline. I found out that people were gassing up their vehicles while the prices on the fuel already in the stations’ tanks were still at reasonable prices because reports alerted people that gas prices were going to rise dramatically. All the stations and curb markets with gas pumps I passed into Tallahassee all had long lines of cars.

One convenience store which sold McKenzie fuel (and independent fuel supplier) had jacked up their price to $5.49 a gallon. I thought they were price gouging until I found out via local news that the convenience store ran out of fuel overnight and had to have gas delivered Friday morning. They had to increase the price for regular gas from $3.67 to $5.49 cents a gallon. And according to Florida law, they are not price-gouging.

Fortunately I filled up the tank of my car Thursday evening after I got off from work and my wife managed to get into a fairly short line at a nearby Circle K convenience store and fill up her car. When I drove home from work late Friday evening, all of the stations and convenience stores had all run out of fuel. Many stations here get supplied via a source in south Georgia. With so many stations out of fuel, it may take some time for everyone to be resupplied. And I imagine the increases in fuel costs will be evident.

With many refineries and offshore rigs shut down due to Hurricane Ike, supplies will be disrupted. The time frame for such a disruption is unknown and will depend upon how much damage the refineries in Texas and the offshore rigs sustain. And no one will know about that until Hurricane Ike passes through giving time for company officials to assess damages. According to state government officials, Florida has a surplus supply but nothing has been said on how long that supply will last. Furthermore, no one can predict this soon how high gas prices will go.

If major damage is discovered at many of the refineries and distribution points in Texas, causing massive price increases, I wonder if this will finally get the Congresscritters up in Washington (especially the liberal Democrats) to get off their lazy butts and pass legislation allowing new refineries and distrubution points to be built. The Democrat leadership (Pelosi & Reid especially) have been very vocal in their opposition of any such legislation. I just hope if they refuse to do anything constructive, they ALL get voted out of office and/or impeached by their respective states as soon as possible.

If you are reading this, please leave comments here reporting how high gas prices are getting in your part of the country as a result of Hurricane Ike. If they go higher or lower after you leave a comment, please come back and update us. I would greatly appreciate it.

I find it absolutely disgusting when people in this nation capitalize on others misfortune by trying to make a buck. It reeks and it is not G-dly. G-d forbid they be in the same situation - I am remiss to ask what they would expect and how they would expect to be treated? Very sad. I pray for these sick price gougers. Yes, we all need money, but money is nothing at the end of the day if you do not have your health and those around you that love you. There is no U-Haul behind a hearse. These folks are so freaking greedy! PFFFFFT!
