How Hard Can It Be For Network News To Come Up With An Original Kicker?
Good grief! I was watching the national news and at the end of the newscast, they usually end with what is called a “kicker.” It’s usually some sort of feelgood piece or some sort of human interest piece and tonight was no exception. Normally between ABC, CBS and NBC there will be three different kickers and I’ll flip through them at the beginnings to see which one I would like to see. However today, ABC and CBS ended with almost identical kickers. Sometimes that happens if the topic is something of major importance. For example, when the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast occurred, all three networks had kickers relating to that issue. Even though the topic was similar each network had unique kickers.
Tonight on ABC and CBS it was truly bizarre.
Not only were the kickers on farmers in Wales using a rather unique method of trying to get dates (putting their names and pictures on milk cartons), ABC and CBS actually interviewed the very same farmer - a gentleman by the name of Ewan Jones.
Are ABC and CBS so pathetically unoriginal that they can’t even come up with material from all across the world without being almost identical?
In this case, the answer is no.
