Sleeping Dirty

Plot Synopsis

Deep inside the floating Alcatraz Prison, Kiel is suspended upside-down over a spiked pit because he won't cooperate with a mysterious project.  The jailer says he'll give him one more chance to agree,  but Kiel refuses, and the jailer cuts the ropes.  Kiel falls, only to find that someone has closed the trap door over the pit.  (The jailer must have a sadistic sense of humor).

The torture session is interrupted as guards rush in to announce intruders.  The scene cuts to earlier in the day, when the girls read about a "government treasure" being guarded in the prison and decide to to after it.

Kiel uses the opportunity to slip away, where naturally he runs into the girls, and they make a deal:  he'll open the vault if they'll help him escape.  The intrepid adventurers make their way to the vault, which Kiel opens in no time flat.  They are all surprised to find the "treasure" is Sheyenne,  who awakes without realizing his body has been switched.  (He is quite shocked when he finds out).  Mirabelle samples some of his blood after he's cut in a firefight with the guards and pronounces it "delicious."

As the guards close in, Kiel asks Sheyenne to shoot out a door leading to the outside, and the party escapes, only to wind up in a literal cliffhanger.  Everyone rejoices when Mirabat tosses down a rope, not knowing the jailer's taken her prisoner and is waiting for them.  The jailer shuts himself (and Mirabelle) in a cage and releases the Falconvein (Alcabin) monster, gloating that the monster will eat the party alive.

The monster is indeed formidable, proving more than a match for Roleta's spells.  Fortunately Roleta brought Sheyenne's ARM from the vault.  He takes it and kills the monster (but Roleta has to use a spell to prevent him from being knocked off the island by the recoil).  Mirabelle transforms and flies out of the cage, and the jailer follows.  He collapses near the edge of the floating island.  It turns out he is acrophobic.

Sheyenne demands to know where his real body is, but the jailer doesn't know.  Sheyenne then pretends to shoot him and frightens him so much he falls to his death.  This episode ends with the adventurers debating how to escape the island.

The Bat in the Hat (with apologies to Dr. Seuss)

There are several indications Kiel is a "special" prisoner...for one thing, he's wearing jeans, while the rest of the inmates have gray uniforms.  For another, the warden addresses him as "Dr. Aronnax" (which, I hate to admit, sounds like an antibiotic.  "That's a nasty cough, Mr. Smith.  I'll give you a prescription for some Aronnax.")

They never explain how he lost his eye, either, or why he wears such a prominent eyepatch-and-fillet.  Maybe it's a macho thing--he's certainly more "rugged" than bishounen.  Or maybe he's hiding some facial scars, though he doesn't come across as the vain type.  Let's face it, Kiel's the homeliest animale since Kuwabara.

Executions-by-monster don't make a whole lot of sense, either.  There are lots of cheaper ways to kill people, including pushing them off the edge of the island.  It would've made MORE sense if the monster were allowed to run loose outside the prison instead of being caged; that way it could deal with any escapees and be additional security.
