Smokin’ Butts Custom BBQ Rig
This is one of those “I meant to have gotten around to posting this but procrastinated” entries on my blog. Back on August 29th & 30th, the Big Bend Bird Club held their 20th annual exotic bird fair and the Leon County Fairgrounds. My wife and I have a very spoiled pet cockatiel named Cheech so we went to get him some new toys and more food (cheaper than buying it from the local pet supply stores especially the chain stores). My wife and I used to be members of the BBBC many years ago and in fact we were on the planning committee that held the first BBBC exotic bird fair which held in the gymnasium of Raa Middle School in Tallahassee. We also volunteered and help set it up, run various things and cleaned the place up Sunday afternoon.
However I digress.
I took my camera along so I could take photographs of the parrots, love birds, cockatoos and anything else that caught my eye. And outside of the building, this custom BBQ rig really caught my eye. Grabbed my eye more like it. It’s the rig for the Smokin’ Butts BBQ from Vernon, Florida [located at 3219 Main St. in Vernon -- phone (850) 535-0860]. I had to ask about it and the owner and the pit master told me they designed it and built it themselves along with a local pastor. If you ask me they did a great job. I suggested they take it up to the Memphis In May event and enter their BBQ contest. They didn’t know about it and said they’d look into it. After we finished our shopping for Cheech, I got one of their pulled pork sandwiches and frankly, I really liked it. I may not be an expert on BBQ, but I am quite knowledgable and since I did cut my teeth so to speak on Memphis and Mississippi Delta BBQ joints as a kid, I am able to recognize very good BBQ. And Vernon, Florida’s Smokin’ Butts BBQ is definitely good BBQ. I hope they come back next year. Maybe they’ll roll into town for the fall fair at the fairgrounds in a couple of months. I’ll wear the t-shirt I bought from them with BBQ pride.
