I have been so busy this week with my part time job and home chores that I am remiss and late in posting this. Carey Bell, blues harmonica player extraordinaire passed away due to heart failure last Sunday at the age of 80. Carey Bell Harrington was born in Macon, Mississippi. He wanted a saxophone but his family could not afford one. Instead, his grandfather bought him a harmonica. He was playing the harmonica by age 8, and in 1956, at 19, he moved to Chicago with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee. Soon, he was supporting himself as a professional musician, playing on the street for tips. He met and learned from Marion “Little Walter” Jacobs and Sonny Boy Williamson II, but found a special fatherly mentor in Big Walter Horton. In the early 1970’s Bell played in the bands of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, touring extensively and recording with both legends. Alligator Records started recording him as a band leader in the 1990’s and I purchased (and highly recommend) the album Harp Attack! where Bell was teamed up with fellow harpists Junior Wells, James Cotton and Billy Branch to record what eventually became one of Alligator Records all time best selling CD’s. He is a true legend in blues and will truly be missed. My condolences go out to the family and friends of Carey Bell.
