“Sing, Beast, Sing” (”I’m Mad” — Willie Mabon) September 1st, 2007

In the early days of HBO, filler materials consisting of short films were used often between movies. Most of it was from independent filmakers, some of whom are fairly well known in the industry today. I’ve always been a fan of unique and interesting animation and also a music nut so when I first saw the animated short called “Sing, Beast, Sing” I knew I was seeing something very special. I really loved the song they used but for several years I had no clue who actually performed the song and where I could find it. None of the regional record stores were any help in the early 80’s and remember this was well before the internet so my research resources were severely limited. It wasn’t until I was working for a radio station in Panama City, Florida years later that a fellow employee, Robert (we’ve been friends ever since) not only knew it was Willie Mabon’s “I’m Mad”, he actually gave me a copy as a present of the Chess Records 78 on which it originally was released. I still have that record somewhere. Anyway, I now have a couple of Chess Records boxed sets which have the song on it and I still enjoy that tune today. It remains one of my alltime favorite blues songs. And thanks to YouTube, I’ve found the video for “Sing, Beast, Sing” online.

The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald — Gordon Lightfoot August 23rd, 2007

This is a song that I’ve always enjoyed ever since I was a kid. This video edited by Joseph Fulton is very good but my only complaint is that this is a re-recording of the song done by Lightfoot and I prefer the original version.

Ladies And Gentlemen, Presenting The Leningrad Cowboys & Red Army Choir Singing “Sweet Home Alabama” August 11th, 2007

A friend of mine alerted me to this video (thanks Robert) and it is indeed entertaining in a strange surreal sort of way. I wonder what Ronnie Van Zandt would have thought of this.

Van Halen Reunion Tour? Don’t Count On It. August 7th, 2007

Van Halen

According to published reports:

Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie’s teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth’s replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

I’m bettin’ that either

a) the tour will be cancelled before it even gets started after rehearsals; or

b) the tour will be cancelled after only a handful of dates.

I just don’t see it happening. Between the huge egos of Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth as well as the huge grudges each of them carry plus the well-publicized anger issues of Eddie Van Halen, it’s going to end badly once the fighting begins.

Music Legend Bo Diddley Suffers Stroke May 17th, 2007

Bo Diddley

From online news reports:

Bo Diddley is in intensive care after suffering a stroke in western Iowa, a publicist said Wednesday.

The 78-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was listed in guarded condition at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., said Susan Clary, a publicist for the musician’s management team.

Diddley, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, was hospitalized Sunday following a concert in Council Bluffs in which he acted disoriented, she said.

Tests indicated that the stroke affected the left side of his brain, impairing his speech and speech recognition, Clary said.

Clary said she has no other details on Diddley’s condition or how long he would be in intensive care.

Diddley, with his black glasses and low-slung guitar, has been an icon in the music industry since he topped the R&B charts with “Bo Diddley” in 1955. His other hits include “Who Do You Love,” “Before You Accuse Me,” “Mona” and “I’m a Man.”

Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was given a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1998.

Coincidentally my Mom and I were talking about Bo Diddley just ove a week ago. At age 78, health problems tend to increase and a major stroke may take a person downhill rather swiftly. My prayers and thoughts go out to him, his family and friends.

UPDATE: Apparently Bo Diddley has been up and walking about the intensive-care unit at Creighton University Medical Center. Doctors there even feel he could make such a recovery that he would be able to perform again. He’s still having some issues with speech but doctors at the medical center point out that the part of the brain that controls speech is a different portion that controls singing and that many people who have problems with speech are able to sing without difficulties. I, for one, pray for a full and speedy recovery for Bo Diddley.

Carey Bell — R.I.P. — 1936-2007 May 11th, 2007

Carey Bell -- November 14, 1936 - May 6, 2006
Carey Bell
November 14, 1936 - May 6, 2006

I have been so busy this week with my part time job and home chores that I am remiss and late in posting this. Carey Bell, blues harmonica player extraordinaire passed away due to heart failure last Sunday at the age of 80. Carey Bell Harrington was born in Macon, Mississippi. He wanted a saxophone but his family could not afford one. Instead, his grandfather bought him a harmonica. He was playing the harmonica by age 8, and in 1956, at 19, he moved to Chicago with his godfather, pianist Lovie Lee. Soon, he was supporting himself as a professional musician, playing on the street for tips. He met and learned from Marion “Little Walter” Jacobs and Sonny Boy Williamson II, but found a special fatherly mentor in Big Walter Horton. In the early 1970’s Bell played in the bands of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon, touring extensively and recording with both legends. Alligator Records started recording him as a band leader in the 1990’s and I purchased (and highly recommend) the album Harp Attack! where Bell was teamed up with fellow harpists Junior Wells, James Cotton and Billy Branch to record what eventually became one of Alligator Records all time best selling CD’s. He is a true legend in blues and will truly be missed. My condolences go out to the family and friends of Carey Bell.

CD Of The Moment April 1st, 2007

The Very Best Of The Meters

On my personal website I have a page called “The CD Of The Moment” where I highlight a CD from my collection. I update it when I feel like it and have no set schedule. I try to feature a CD or an artist that isn’t currently has mainstream attention although I have done so in the past. The most current CD featured as of this date is “The Very Best Of The Meters”, a 1997 release from Rhino Records. Here’s what I wrote about it.

I have been a fan of The Meters for many years. I actually heard their music before I knew who they were. Let me explain. When I was a kid, my parents were driving us back from a mini-vacation spent in New Orleans. As we were getting closer to our Mississippi home (only a few hours from New Orleans) my Dad tuned into a radio station he normally listened to. An easy listening station. Bored me to tears but he was the boss and he had put up with me listening to WRNO (”The Rock of New Orleans”) long enough. One song the easy listening station played was a cool song that I correctly deduced was called “They All Asked For You” and the announced said it was performed by Bobby Sherman. It was a funny little ditty.

A couple of weeks later, my Dad asked a person he knew that had a little in-home recording and production studio if he could make a custom 8-track tape for me. I gave him a list of songs I’d
like to have on the tape and he said he’d try to put as many he could on there. When I got the tape back, the song “They All Asked For You” was there but it wasn’t the white-bread Bobby Sherman version but a much funkier, cooler version that I liked a lot better. However my Dad’s friend didn’t put a songlist on the tape case so I didn’t find out who did that particular version. Needless to say I played that 8-track tape a lot until it finally got eaten by an old 8-track tape player.

Now on one of those later trips to New Orleans I had the distinct pleasure of watching a free performance by the Neville Brothers in Jackson Square. This was sometime in the mid to late 70’s (I can’t remember exactly when) and I seem to remember it coinciding with the Jazz Fest (or whatever it was called back then - it was a lot smaller back then compared to how huge it is now). I fell in love with their sound, their performance and their songs so I started getting as many of their lp’s as I could find around the small town I loved in (which wasn’t that many).

Many years later as I started getting CD versions of the vinyl lp’s in my collection, I got more Neville Brothers albums. And when the internet made it easier to find out information about artists, I discovered that Art Neville was in The Meters. I figured that if it had one of the Neville Brothers in it, it had to be good. My instincts were absolutely correct. So I started getting their CD’s as well. During this time I was employed at a business that allowed me to have my own office and as such I played CD’s all the way through. While one of CD’s by The Meters was playing I suddenly realized that the song I was hearing was “They All Asked For You” (found out the correct title is “They All Ask’d For You”). Suddenly memories of my childhood listening to the song came flooding back.

Anyway, for those who are unfamiliar with The Meters, this “Best of” album from Rhino Records is an excellent introduction to their funkiness, their hipness and their coolness. But it’s not enough. It’s a good start, though but if you get hooked on their sound like I did all those years ago, you’re going to have to search out their other albums which were remastered and re-released by Sundazed Music.

Los Straitjackets And The Pontani Sisters — “Mad Scientwist” And “Twistin’ Gorilla” March 20th, 2007

With my passion for music and for professional wrestling’s masked wrestlers it’s no surprise that I am also a fan of Los Straitjackets, the best known masked instrumental rock & roll combo in the country. Their style is 60’s California surf music and their videos reflect that era with a touch of retro beach movies. Here are two of their videos from YouTube, “Mad Scientwist” and “Twistin’ Gorilla” featuring the Pontani Sisters. Also included is video from a live appearance in California. I love their guitars.

Madness — One Step Beyond/House Of Fun/Baggy Trousers/Our House March 1st, 2007

The first video from my all-time favorite band, Madness. Classic video from the 1980’s. Listen up, rude boys!

Madness’ video for “Bed & Breakfast Man.”

Another cool video from Madness. This time for “Baggy Trousers.”

And the best-known video in the United States, “Our House.”

Primus — Jerry Was A Race Car Driver/Mr. Krinkle March 1st, 2007

This video is what sold me on Primus back in the 90’s. To me Les Claypool is an amazing bassist.

And as an added bonus is perhaps one of the most bizarre videos I have ever seen for Primus’ “Mr. Krinkle.”

Big hugs to readers from The Bullwinkle Blog, Pirate’s Cove, stikNstein, The Crazy Rants Of Samantha Burns, Right Voices, Stuck On Stupid.

Muddy Waters & Sonny Boy Williamson II — Got My Mojo Working March 1st, 2007

The Meters — Look-Ka Py Py/Jungle Man (1974) February 28th, 2007

New Orleans’ premiere funk band has always been considered to be The Meters. This performance from a 1974 Japanese television show is a prime example of how great their music is.

The Younglings — (I Don’t Wanna Be No) Nerf Herder February 27th, 2007

Okay, so I have TWO videos of the day. So there! I had a list of videos on YouTube with “Nerf Herder” (I was looking for the band of that name) and this video by The Younglings came up. It’s hip-hop in the Star Wars universe. ‘Nuff said.

Nerf Herder — Mr. Spock February 27th, 2007

I can’t remember where I first saw this video but it definitely made am impression on me. Since I am an admitted Trekkie from the days of the original series (I’m dating myself but I was a wee rug rat when it originally aired in the 60’s — I really got hooked on it when I was a tad older and the show was in syndication) and a music nut as well this song appealed to me. I don’t know if this song qualifies as “nerd-core” or “nerd-rock” or whatever. I just know it’s a good song and a fun and entertaining video, too. It’s the video of the day. Enjoy.

A very logical welcome to readers from Pirate’s Cove, Adam’s Blog, stikNstein, The Bullwinkle Blog, Basil’s Blog, Jo’s Cafè, Third World County, Conservative Thoughts, Planck’s Constant, The Trouble With Angels.
