Van Halen Reunion Tour? Don’t Count On It.

Van Halen

According to published reports:

Van Halen will announce a 50-date American reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth during a news conference in Hollywood next week, sources said.

The arena trek will begin in early October.

Roth, who split from the rock group in the mid-1980s in hopes of solo stardom, will reunite with co-founders Eddie Van Halen on guitar and brother Alex Van Halen on drums. Eddie’s teenage son Wolfgang will sub for Michael Anthony on bass.

A proposed summer amphitheater tour by the group never got off the ground, with Eddie Van Halen entering a rehabilitation facility for undisclosed reasons in March.

In the months since, the guitarist has been seen publicly looking healthy and fit.

Van Halen last toured in 2004, with Roth’s replacement, vocalist Sammy Hagar, grossing nearly $40 million, according to Billboard Boxscore.

I’m bettin’ that either

a) the tour will be cancelled before it even gets started after rehearsals; or

b) the tour will be cancelled after only a handful of dates.

I just don’t see it happening. Between the huge egos of Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth as well as the huge grudges each of them carry plus the well-publicized anger issues of Eddie Van Halen, it’s going to end badly once the fighting begins.

I’m willing to bet David Lee Rot (the “h” was PURPOSELY left off, my pet name for him) was probably slumped over a table in some sleazy bar..or slumped over some sleazy broad when he got the call to consider getting back with his former bandmates. I don’t know if he’s looked lately, but his solo career crashed long ago.

I’m betting he’s had a good dose of humble pie by now and is probably jumping at the chance to revive his once brilliant career with Van Halen )Provided Eddie can stay out of rehab long enough to actually have a tour.)

Just saw them here in Grand Rapids at the end of their World Tour and they finished it strong! But hey, I respect your guts in coming out with the prediction and don’t fault you for playing the odds that it would fall apart at all. Just glad that they emerged from this intact and who knows, maybe new VH music will result from this latest go-round?

  28. Carl Says:

Dave, I am pleased that I was wrong but with all the infighting that occurred regularly between Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth, it probably was a good bet they wouldn’t tour for very long. I’m still pessimistic about this reunion lasting for any appreciative length of time. In a cynical way I think DLR and EVH were hurting enough for cash inflow that they made up their minds to put up with each other until their cash woes eased.

  30. Frankz Says:

The cash needs was a WOW factor for the reunion of DLR and EVH for sure. Mainly after EVH divorce from Valerie Bertinelli. Who doesn’t need to survive….but i guess they did pretty well and they look good friends together. It seems they made their differences to disapear. I watch them on tour and they look happy playing together. EVH after rehab time also look pretty health and happy with his son playing together. It needs a new album to strenght the band now.
