West Virginia won the NIT title with a 78-73 victory over Clemson on Thursday night but then had a team-wide “oops” moment after donning championship t-shirts. If you look closely, you’ll notice that Virginia is misspelled. The “i” that is supposed to go between the “n” and “a” is missing. On all the t-shirts. Oops!
ADDENDUM: Rather, an extra thought occurred to me…I wonder how long before someone sells some of those t-shirts on ebay.

I have been a longtime fan of the stage illusions and comedy of Penn & Teller. Although there are plenty of points that I disagree with them on in regards to, for example, Christianity and politics, I am in complete agreement with their sentiments concerning the message to terrorists that the 9/11 Monument at Ground Zero should convey (I wouldn’t use the adult language but concur with the message in general).

Almost the end of March. It’s getting warmer. It’s the end of the work week. Therefore it’s another Open Trackback Friday! This is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter although I installed a pretty good trackback spam filter recently (incidentally, if you leave a trackback and it doesn’t show up by the end of the day, please send me email so I can check up on it — you can find my email address in the upper portion of the column on the left). To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

Six Muslim clerics who were questioned and detained in Minnesota in November of 2006 on a US Airways flight after passengers reported suspicious behavior are suing as a result. Named in the suit are several unknown passengers referred to as “John Doe.” Michelle Malkin has an excellent video over at Hot Air that makes excellent points about who is “John Doe.” She also has the “John Doe Manifesto” posted on her blog, but I’m reposting it here:
Dear Muslim Terrorist Plotter/Planner/Funder/Enabler/Apologist,
You do not know me. But I am on the lookout for you. You are my enemy. And I am yours.
I am John Doe.
I am traveling on your plane. I am riding on your train. I am at your bus stop. I am on your street. I am in your subway car. I am on your lift.
I am your neighbor. I am your customer. I am your classmate. I am your boss.
I am John Doe.
I will never forget the example of the passengers of American Airlines Flight 93 who refused to sit back on 9/11 and let themselves be murdered in the name of Islam without a fight.
I will never forget the passengers and crew members who tackled al Qaeda shoe-bomber Richard Reid on American Airlines Flight 63 before he had a chance to blow up the plane over the Atlantic Ocean.
I will never forget the alertness of actor James Woods, who notified a stewardess that several Arab men sitting in his first-class cabin on an August 2001 flight were behaving strangely. The men turned out to be 9/11 hijackers on a test run.
I will act when homeland security officials ask me to “report suspicious activity.”
I will embrace my local police department’s admonition: “If you see something, say something.”
I am John Doe.
I will protest your Jew-hating, America-bashing “scholars.”
I will petition against your hate-mongering mosque leaders.
I will raise my voice against your subjugation of women and religious minorities.
I will challenge your attempts to indoctrinate my children in our schools.
I will combat your violent propaganda on the Internet.
I am John Doe.
I will support law enforcement initiatives to spy on your operatives, cut off your funding, and disrupt your murderous conspiracies.
I will oppose all attempts to undermine our borders and immigration laws.
I will resist the imposition of sharia principles and sharia law in my taxi cab, my restaurant, my community pool, the halls of Congress, our national monuments, the radio and television airwaves, and all public spaces.
I will not be censored in the name of tolerance.
I will not be cowed by your Beltway lobbying groups in moderate clothing. I will not cringe when you shriek about “profiling” or “Islamophobia.”
I will put my family’s safety above sensitivity. I will put my country above multiculturalism.
I will not submit to your will. I will not be intimidated.
I am John Doe.
With that said, I am a “John Doe” as well and could add a few other items to the manifesto.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow found out that the cancer that was thought to have been has spread to his liver. My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family. I have personally witnessed how aggressive liver cancer is and someone close to me has died from it only a week after being diagnosed. I sincerely hope they caught it early enough to be effectively treated. Tony Snow, kick cancer’s ass.

A friend sent me these pictures from Biloxi. Several live oak trees in the median of U.S. Highway 90, Biloxi, Mississippi that died as a result of hurricane Katrina received new life at the hands of a skilled chain saw artist. This occurred near where my inlaws reside. Click on each picture to see a larger image. According to the City of Biloxi’s official website:
Dozens of live oaks have died in the center medians of the scenic highway in the 16 months since Hurricane Katrina, and, under Holloway’s plan, MDOT crews will leave as much as 20 feet of the tree trunks in place, where international award-winning ‘chainsaw artist’ Dayton Scoggins of Mississippi will sculpt a variety of marine-related objects.
“We’ve had more than 300 trees of different varieties planted in Biloxi on public property alone since Hurricane Katrina,” Holloway said, “and in this particular project, we’re giving a second life to something Mother Nature attempted to destroy. We were dealt lemons and now we’re going to make lemonade.”
As you can see, the project has begun.

The final episode of The George Michael Sports Machine aired this weekend after a long 27 year long run. That era is now over as Michael has decided to pull the plug on the show. This Sunday was its last broadcast. According to an article in USA Today Michael decided to end the program after NBC, who distributed The Sports Machine and owns the Washington D.C. affiliate where George was a sportscaster since 1980, requested drastic staff cuts due to budgetary issues. Michael told executives that he would need to be the first person let go, and he was. Despite this, the parting between Michael and the network was amicable. I loved to watch the monthly weird, wacky and wild plays of the month which he compiled and looked forward to the annual best of the weird plays of year. It always got me laughing as well as looking on in amazement with some of the unbelievable plays. Michael also created some great packages on sports stories ranging from the outstanding to the touching. I’m going to miss the show. The George Michael Sports Machine was ESPN before ESPN was cool.

I’ll admit that there are extremists on both sides of the political fence, but upon comparing the two there appears to be an overwhelming amount of extremists on the liberals’ side that far outnumbers those on the conservative side. It was announced that Snow, the White House spokesman will undego surgery to remove “a growth” from his abdomen. If you recall, Tony is a cancer survivor. Newsbusters and Townhall.com both document those making the ill-will posts. Dean Barnett from Townhall.com also said he saved a screencap in case the “thread disappears down Arianna’s memory hole.” I for one wish Mr. Snow a successful surgery and speedy recovery. I will keep him and his family in my prayers and thoughts.

Eighty-one years after Houdini died on Halloween 1926, his great-nephew wants to exhume the magician’s body to determine if enemies poisoned him for debunking their bogus claims of contact with the dead.
“His death shocked the entire nation, if not the world. Now, maybe it’s time to take a second look,” George Hardeen said.
Houdini’s family scheduled a news conference for Friday to give details on the plans. Hardeen said a team of top forensic investigators would conduct new tests on Houdini’s body.
My prediction?
They’ll open the casket and discover Houdini’s body missing and find instead David Blaine and Criss Angel inside fighting over who gets credit for “magically” getting into the coffin.

I’ve recently installed a trackback filter plugin and so far it’s caught pretty much all the trackback spam that had been coming through. However I’m not certain if it is also filtering out legitimate trackbacks. Therefore if you have sent a trackback and it doesn’t show up in the comment section, please email me (my email address is located in the upper part of the left column) ASAP so I can check into it.
UPDATE: The trackback spam fillter seems to be working. There were a few days earlier this week and late last week that I was getting over 1000 spam trackbacks a day but the filter seems to be stopping 99.9% of them. Since I’ve installed it, only one TB spam got through. Also no one’s emailed me about legitimate TB’s being killed via the filter. Looks like it’s working.

Sometimes it’s hard to cheer for a single team when two teams you normally root for are in the same game. Mississippi State played Florida State in an NIT game tonight at “The Hump” in Starkville, Mississippi. The winner moves on to the semi-finals in New York City. I graduated from Mississippi State and grew up a Bulldog fan but also attended Florida State for a year, rooting for the Seminoles and currently live in Tallahassee. So my loyaties were torn. The last time the two schools played against each other that I can recall was during the NCAA baseball regional several years ago. As the score shows, the Bulldogs won the game hands down and will be headed for the NIT’s “Final Four” and I will be rooting for them while the Seminoles will be headed back to Tallahassee. They had a good season. Hopefully both teams will improve enough so next year both of them will be in the NCAA Tournament instead of the NIT.

I found this frog on the handle of the trash can beside my house. I have never seen a frog of this color as far as I can remember. It’s really a very light grey almost white with black spots. Anyone have any idea what species it is?
UPDATE: Dr. F. Wayne King, Emeritus Curator of Herpetology at the Florida Museum of Natural History wrote me with the following information:
The frog in your photograph is a Cope’s Gray Treefrog, Hyla chrysoscelis. Typically they are gray with darker markings, but their color varies from white to gray to greenish gray. Yours is white. They have a white spot beneath the eye on the upper lip, which is clearly seen in your photo.
When Cope’s Gray Treefrog is resting its hindleg is folded alongside its body, as in your photograph. When in that position, you cannot see the color of the skin hidden between the folds. The color of the hidden skin on the hindleg in Cope’s Gray Treefrog is orange, which is diagnostic of the species.
The Bird-voiced Treefrog, Hyla avivoca, is a slightly smaller gray-colored treefrog found along the Apalachicola River. The hidden surface of its hindlegs are green.
Cope’s Gray Treefrog is fairly common in north Florida, including around Tallahassee — see:
I hope this answers your questions about the treefrog in your photo. But if not, let me know.
Thank you Dr. King. You have answered all the questions concerning the tree frog. I honestly don’t ever remember seeing one like this but apparently they are fairly common around here.

With my passion for music and for professional wrestling’s masked wrestlers it’s no surprise that I am also a fan of Los Straitjackets, the best known masked instrumental rock & roll combo in the country. Their style is 60’s California surf music and their videos reflect that era with a touch of retro beach movies. Here are two of their videos from YouTube, “Mad Scientwist” and “Twistin’ Gorilla” featuring the Pontani Sisters. Also included is video from a live appearance in California. I love their guitars.

Posey’s Up The Creek Seafood Steam Room and Oyster Bar
U.S. Highway 98 in Panacea, Florida
Saturday, my wife and I decided to drive down to Panacea to dine at Posey’s Up The Creek Seafood Steam Room And Oyster Bar once again. We enjoyed ourselves so much a little over a week ago we made it a point to go again as soon as we could. And since our tax refund arrived, it gave us the excuse we needed to go back especially for some gumbo. Besides, it was St. Patrick’s Day and what better way to celebrate than with a heaping helping of Irish Gumbo, right? Right?
Well, at least it has green okra in it, so it’s close enough.
Interior at Posey’s
This is a view of the interior of Posey’s. The table at which my wife and I sat is on the lower right of the photo.
Old picture on the wall at Posey’s
One of the owners told me a little about this picture and the unique frame. She told me that it’s a photograph from the Steinhatchee River taken in the early 70’s. She told me an interesting story about one patron who came in to eat for the first time there and remarked that the picture was of the Steinhatchee River. When he was asked how he knew, the man replied that one of the boats in the photograph was his grandfather’s. Small world, ain’t it? I asked how the frame was crafted to have barnicle and I was informed that the frame was tied to a pier for about three or four months to allow barnicles to attach and grow upon it. A frame with brackets instead of glue had to be used since the salt water would cause any glue to dissolve.
A close-up of part of the frame
Blue Crab On A Plaque
Above the photograph is a fairly large blue crab which was caught by one of the owner’s sons and had put on this wooden plaque. There is a second one further to the left as well (you can see the second one in the interior photo of Posey’s above) to make a matched set. As far as blue crabs go, it’s pretty large but the owner told me that her son has caught plenty bigger ones out in the area. Those must have been some pretty good-sized blue crabs.
Not only did we enjoy some outstanding gumbo (in my opinion the best in the region if not of any restaurant to that I’ve been at any time in my past) but some delicious crab cakes as well. I also indulged in some steamed oysters with garlic and parmesan cheese (I don’t consume raw oysters anymore per doctor’s orders). The whole meal was delicious. I heartily recommend dining at Posey’s Up The Creek Seafood Steam Room And Oyster Bar if you are visiting Tallahassee, Panacea or Apalachicola.
