Back from hiatus (and after spending the previous week visiting relatives and inlaws along I-10) and presenting a “two-fer” of Uncle Jay Explains The News for your enjoyment. I will try to blog about my trip soon.
Uncle Jay’s news word for last week is agenda.
Uncle Jay’s news word for this week is imperfect.

Okay, it now seems like freezing temperatures are finally finished around here and won’t be back until next winter. The downside is pollen has started as has sneezings and wheezings in this household. But we remain cheerful for it’s Open Trackback Friday! It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

Face it, Terrell Owens is an example of what it extremely wrong with many NFL players and any team who adds him to their roster is inviting more trouble than he’s worth. Every team that has employed Owens thus far has reached the same conclusion. Terrell Owens is a classless, clueless, self-centered individual who has always placed his interests before his team. And he isn’t going to change. It stands to reason that a low-ranked team who is well under their salary cap will sign Owens to a 1- or 2-year contract. However whichever cellar-dweller signs him will still have a dismal record and I predict Owens will whine, moan, pitch hissy fits, etc. just as he has always done.
Sports columnist Mike Wise put it this way:
The Dallas Cowboys have cut everybody’s favorite athletic malcontent, Jerry Jones releasing him from his contract. Which, if you think about it, is all you have to know about why T.O. would be an abject disaster for the Washington Redskins or any franchise that believes supreme talent supersedes genuine chemistry.
If pro football’s Father Flanagan — the man who thinks Tank Johnson is a plus and originally thought Adam Jones was a good idea — boots you to the curb, it’s a pretty good sign the negatives outweigh the positives.
The way things began for the Cowboys in early September, I was willing to be converted. I believed Owens had finally gotten it. I thought his gargantuan need for attention and acceptance had finally been trumped by his desire to fit in and win.
But then adversity set in, and T.O. did what he always does: When the going gets tough, he blames others.
Dallas Cowboy fans, unite in wishing Terrell Owens a hearty and enthusiastic “good riddance!“

All I can add to Dr. White’s response is a resounding “Amen!”

Saturday, the great broadcasting legend, Paul Harvey passed away at the age of 90. You can read his bio on the Paul Harvey website which tells of his life better than I can in this blog entry. However, I would like to relate one thing from my early days in radio broadcasting.
The first radio station at which I worked was a little 5K watt southern Mississippi station with the call letters WABO. Like many southern radio stations, it aired daily Paul Harvey news and comments as well as his “Rest Of The Story” segments. One of my job duties was to make sure to get it recorded on reel-to-reel tape for broadcast later in the hour. I really enjoyed those segments although the station made it a little difficult because they wanted local ads played between Harvey’s segments which was difficult because there were little to no pauses between the time Harvey would say “page two” and begin the second segment. However it did force me to sharpen my timing and reactions so fairly soon, I could seamlessly insert those spots between segments and while the local spots played, I could re-cue the taped Paul Harvey program so start the next segment immediate when the local spots finished. It was a talent that served me very well in my radio career and eventually in my television career.
And in the legendary words of Paul Harvey
“Now you know…the REST of the story.”
Paul Harvey…good-day to you, sir.
