A couple of months ago I obtained a copy of “Mondo Lucha A Go-Go” a book honoring the history and pageantry that is Mexican professional wrestling better known as “lucha libre.” According to author Dan Madigan, modern lucha libre can be traced back to a gentleman by the name of Don Salvador Lutteroth who became a promoter of lucha libre shows in the 1940’s.
This book, published in 2007, highlights most of the major luchadores in lucha libre history such as El Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras, Huracàn Ramirez, Dr. Wagner, Mèdico Asesino, Angel Blanco, El Solitario and many others. It also explains much of the evolution of lucha libre as well as its traditions. Madigan believes that Mexican lucha libre fans are probably the most passionate fans of any sort in the world. And judging from what I have seen on TV and read about shows, I tend to agree with him.
Whereas Don Salvado Lutteroth is credited as being the originator of organized lucha libre in Mexico, author Madigan gives major credit to Paul Heyman (a.k.a. Paul E. Dangerously) as being the person who gave positive nationwide exposure to luchadores and increased their popularity to such a level that one of the “big two” (WCW) offered big contracts to most of the luchadores on Heyman’s ECW and snatched them right up. Stars like Rey Mysterio, Jr., Eddie Guerrero, La Parka and Juventud Guerrera suddenly went from Heyman’s ECW to the Ted Turner-funded WCW which gave them a weekly spotlight and American fans quickly took to the high-flying, fast paced matches from the luchadores. Unfortunately, Vince McMahon’s WWF (now WWE) still shunned lucha libre and continued to make a mockery of the enmascarado (masked wrestler) with such ludicrously bad ideas as “the Machines“, “the Conquistadors” (perennial WWF jobbers in the 80’s although the two men under the hoods, Jose Estrada and Jose Luis Rivera, were both quite talented luchadores) and probably the worst insult to the enmascarado, Doink the Clown. However even with McMahon’s attempts to bury lucha libre and the enmascarado in the 80’s and early 90’s, once ECW and WCW were both bought out by the McMahons, the WWE became the home to several luchadores like Rey Mysterio, Jr., Eddie Guerrero and Super Crazy whose popularity skyrocketed even further.
Now personally speaking I grew up in the southeast and was a professional wrestling fan when I was a little kid in the late 60’s. The areas where I grew up and spent time visiting relatives exposed me to several different wrestling organizations based out of Tennessee, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. I developed a fascination with the masked wrestler early on and became a fan of the Assassin, the Spoiler, Mr. Olympia, Mr. Wrestling II and the Masked Superstar. The only esposure I had with luchadores like Mil Mascaras and Blue Demon was via the wrestling magazines I regularly purchased at mall bookstores. In fact, I never got to watch any lucha libre in its home element until the late 1990’s when a former co-worker who was also a big wrestling fan brought some lucha libre tapes he got from ebay. On one of our breaks we watched some of the tape and this was unlike anything I had ever seen. Although by that time I had watched luchadores perform in ECW and WCW, it was only a taste of the fullblown lucha libre experience. The luchadores in ECW and WCW at that time were actually holding back (limiting the potential for injury) even though the moves they were doing were still highly entertaining. From that viewing I purchased some tapes via ebay but the quality of those tapes were so poor that I didn’t buy any afterwards. Several years later my wife and I were dining at a local Mexican restaurant on a Saturday and one of the televisions there had Galavision on. Normally the show would be soccer (futbal), some telenovela or some goofy comedy show but this day it was a lucha libre show from CMLL. What normally would be a 30-minute meal turned into a lengthy dining experience much to the amusement of my wife (bless her…she puts up with my passions for professional wrestling, music, etc.). Even though I didn’t understand most of the Spanish audio, I could follow the action well enough as well as the storylines told in the ring. Plus the graphics used on the show explained much to even a non-Spanish-speaking individual like myself. Unfortunately our local cable outlet only carries Univision which has no lucha libre show. I’ve contacted my cable outlet requesting them add Galavision to their lineup but so far, no luck. And I can’t afford a satellite dish (although even I am passionate for professional wrestling, I’m not foolish enough to spend big bucks on a dish system just to get Galavision).
But I digress…
Dan Madigan’s book is a good introduction to the world of lucha libre to the uninformed and an excellent addition to the lucha libre fan’s library. I hope that if the book ever gets updated that they add more information of some of the bigger lucha libre stars currently active but as it stands, “Mondo Lucha A Go-Go” is a fun read with plenty of rare photos from the past.

I’ve upgraded to the most recent version of WordPress, worked out all the little kinks that came up and it’s now working well. And now it’s yet another Open Trackback Friday. This is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

Okay, with some trepidation…okay, so a LOT of trepidation, I finally sat down and attempted to upgrade my little blog from WordPress 1.5 to WordPress 2.1.3 utilizing WordPress’ “Famous Five-Minute Installation.” I made sure I had my older version in backup just in case something awful happened to the lot. Without going into a lot of details it finally got done after a few misfires and one major scare. The major scare was when I was attempting to activate the Akismet spam filter and when I went to look at the contents of my blog…THEY WEREN’T THERE ANYMORE!
1000 posts…gone…poof…not there…gone.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to cry or get my gun and shoot the computer.
However, after trying to rationally think things through I deleted all the files in the database and re-uploaded everything. And it worked. All my posts were back. So I started messing about with the plugins and POOF…the 1000 posts…gone again.
So I started deactivating and activating various plugins and finally found the culprit. At first I thought Akismet was the source but it turns out that it was a plugin called Adhesive that was the true culprit. Apparently this plugin, which worked fine on my old WP 1.5 version blog doesn’t work well at all with the upgrade. So it’s “sayonara, Adhesive!”
When I get the chance, I’ll look for a suitable replacement which works with this upgraded version of WordPress. In the meantime, I’ll just live without it.
Anyway, for the time being, you won’t notice any difference in the blog from a viewer’s standpoint. Behind the scenes there are a lot of changes that I’m going to have to get used to. Eventually I’m going to experiment with some new looks for the blog and see which one satisfies me. Right now, I’ll stick with the notebook because I’ve got it tweaked how I like it and I don’t know at this time if my tweaks would work in the new presentations. However some simple experimentations would answer that.
Stay tuned.

Who would have thought on September 18th, 2004 when I wrote my first post that I would reach the milestone of 1000 posts? I sure didn’t. At least not back in 2004. However as time went on and the “blogging bug” took effect, I realized that at some point I would actually make it to 1000 entries on my blog. Now it’s onward and upward.

My prayers go out to the families, friends, fellow students and aquaintances of those murdered by an insane nut-job whom I will not dignify in any way. The focus should be on them and not the murderer.
On a related note, I find it highly ironic and extremely hypocritical of the liberal community to be screaming “Why didn’t someone profile him?” and similar questions as to profiling. The very same liberals who have been protesting profiling post-9/11 are now demanding it be done to protect Americans from murderous attacks. The hypocrisy from the liberal community knows no bounds.

While cruising through the world of blogs, I came across one that I’m not too sure about. It’s called “Suicide Food” and explains itself thusly:
What is Suicide Food? Suicide Food is any depiction of animals that act as though they wish to be consumed. Suicide Food actively participates in or celebrates its own demise. Suicide Food identifies with the oppressor. Suicide Food is a bellwether of our decadent society. Suicide Food says, “Hey! Come on! Eating meat is without any ethical ramifications! See, Mr. Greenjeans? The animals aren’t complaining! So what’s your problem?” Suicide Food is not funny.
I honestly am unable to tell if the blog owner is being serious about all this or is just engaging in clever satire. Either way, I find it all highly amusing.

Okay folks, my wife’s domain server had a major crash and they lost everything. So I’m having to upload most everything almost from scratch. My sidebar is a bit out of date and it’s going to take several days for me to get back to speed. Any help will be appreciated.
UPDATE: I think I now have everything pretty much back in place and we are working with our host server and domain host to get the whole kit and kaboodle in a more secure system with regular automated backups. Apparently with our old account, backups were an extra charge (something I didn’t know — my wife got the domain started for herself). Anyway, hopefully this will be avoided in the future.

The ultra-liberal and highly disingenuous group Media Matters has unveiled its “hit list” of conservative talk show hosts. They are bound and determined to force conservative talk shows hosts such as Rush Limbaugh, Bill O’Reilly, Sean Hannity and others off the air by hook or by crook (predicably mostly by crook). Brian Maloney of The Radio Equalizer has more details on this developing story and will be following it closely in weeks and months to come. A portion of Maloney’s post:
The question is this: when partisan liberals at Media Matters are calling the shots over talk radio programming, do you really believe they will play fair?
Or, will they do a “splice- and- dice” routine with audio excerpts, taking words out of context in the hopes of bringing down hosts they don’t like?
Yes, there’s no question that Don Imus had been pushing his luck for ages. In fact, it’s amazing he wasn’t brought down years ago.
Now, however, we’re headed down a dangerous path, one where popular hosts may very well be yanked off the air simply because they disagree with David Brock, Arianna Huffington and the rest of the elitist left.
With Democrats in Congress working quietly but diligently on reviving the “Fairness Doctrine” (which is anything but fair and is intended to remove the conservative domination of talk radio) and Media Matters now announcing an active campaign to force conservative talk show hosts off the air (more than likely with highly unethical and immoral methods) Brian Maloney makes a powerful point when he wrote, “While talkers on the Media Matters hit list should feel a sense of pride over the way they’ve enraged the left, at the same time, they’d better keep closer tabs on their ‘progressive’ enemies than ever before.”

This video hits the nail on the head…the Democrat Party made promises and kept none while going back to the classic tax-and-spend mentality in the process. As the saying goes…a leopard can’t change its spots. And the Democrats can help but screw us over.

It seems that the Gulfport landmark S.S. Hurricane Camille may have finally been defeated and will be removed after over 30 years along U.S. Highway 90. From the Biloxi Sun Herald newspaper:
For nearly four decades it sat in the same spot, almost mocking large hurricanes and the frequent squalls that festered in the Gulf.
Over time, it became a draw for tourists and a colossal reminder for locals, but chances are, bulldozers will soon scrape away what’s left of the SS Hurricane Camille.
The 72-foot tugboat East Point was pushed ashore in August 1969 with its bow facing west on property owned by Lucille Moody’s parents.
The family noticed curious crowds would gather to take pictures after the storm and because it was a natural attraction for tourists and locals, the Moodys bought the boat and changed the name.
Railroad tracks were built to scoot the vessel more than 200 feet south to where it sits today. Moody opened a tiny gift shop near the stern in 1970.
“I think it has a lot of historical significance,” said Missy Bennie, who was visiting last week with a volunteer group from Iowa that decided to stop for pictures in front of the old tug.
“I honestly think you guys should do whatever it takes to keep it,” she said. “It’s a historical reminder of what happened here, and it gives you a pretty good idea of how powerful storms can be.”
Moody, a college student when Camille struck South Mississippi, is now in her 60s. She has no plans of reviving the iconic vessel or the gift shop.
“I’m too old to start over,” she said. “We’re going to sell the property, and I don’t know what will happen to the boat.”
Historical experts on the Coast seem to agree the tugboat probably has about as much historic value as the knickknacks sold in the gift shop, but it’s hard to find a local who doesn’t know about the boat Camille beached.
Moody said a price has not been set and a sales contract on the property will not include any requirements to save the SS Camille.
“I’m not going to tear it down, but if someone buys the property and wants to remove it, then that will be up to them,” she said. “If I had a dollar for every time a tourist had their picture taken in front of the boat, I’d already be in the Riviera.”
The Moodys had several holes cut in the hull so if another storm surge ever splashed through Gulfport, the SS Camille would not float away. That surge-plus some-happened again in August 2005.
The boat survived two of the worst storms in U.S. history. It survived the casino invasion of the 1990s and it even outlasted some of the largest gambling barges on the Coast, but today, its days seem numbered.
Also from the Biloxi Sun Herald:
After standing for nearly four decades in the same spot, the SS Hurricane Camille’s future is unknown as the land it stands on is up for sale.
The 72-foot tugboat, originally named East Point, was pushed ashore in August 1969 on the property owned by Lucille Moody’s parents. The boat soon became a tourist attraction and the Moody’s bought it and changed the name.
The family had several holes cut in the hull so if another storm surge came through Gulfport, the boat would not float away. Another surge did hit the area during Hurricane Katrina.
Moody was a college student when Camille struck South Mississippi. Now in her 60s, she has no plans of reviving the vessel or the gift shop that accompanied it.
“I’m too old to start over,” she said. “We’re going to sell the property, and I don’t know what will happen to the boat.”
Though a price has not been set, a sales contract on the property will not include any requirements to save the SS Camille, she said.
There is a boom in high-rise condo construction currently ongoing along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and more than likely the property will be purchased by one of those companies or by a nearby casino that is currently rebuilding its gambling facilities as well as a resort.

Just a few reasons why Al Sharpton is no authority on race relations, morals, etc. and is, instead, someone to ignore. Review some of Sharpton’s history:
1987: Sharpton spread the incendiary Tawana Brawley hoax, insisting heatedly that a 15-year-old black girl was abducted, raped, and smeared with feces by a group of white men. He singled out Steve Pagones, a young state prosecutor. Pagones turned out to be wholly innocent, the crime never actually occurred. Nevertheless, Sharpton responded by taunting him: “If we’re lying, sue us, so we can. . .prove you did it.” Pagones did sue and eventually won a $345,000 verdict for defamation. To this day, Sharpton has refused to recant his unspeakable slander or to apologize for his role in the odious affair.
1991: A Hasidic Jewish taxi driver in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights section accidentally killed Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black child, and anti-semitic riots erupted. Sharpton raced to the scene just like a lawyer ambulance-chaser in order to pour gasoline upon the fire. Later, at Gavin’s funeral he railed against the “diamond merchants” with “the blood of innocent babies” on their hands. He mobilized hundreds of demonstrators to march through the Jewish neighborhood, chanting, “No justice, no peace.” A rabbinical student, Yankel Rosenbaum, was surrounded by a mob shouting “Kill the Jews!” and stabbed to death.
1995: When the United House of Prayer, a large black landlord in Harlem, raised the rent on Freddy’s Fashion Mart, Freddy’s white Jewish owner was forced to raise the rent on his subtenant, a black-owned music store. A landlord-tenant dispute ensued, and Sharpton used it to incite racial hatred. “We will not stand by,” he warned malignantly, “and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.” Sharpton’s National Action Network set up picket lines. Customers going into Freddy’s were spat upon and cursed as “traitors” and “Uncle Toms.” Some protesters shouted, “Burn down the Jew store!” and simulated striking a match. “We’re going to see that this cracker suffers,” says Sharpton’s colleague Morris Powell. On December 8, 1995, one of the protesters burst into Freddy’s, shot four employees point-blank, then set the store on fire. Seven employees died in the inferno.
I will never understand why so many people, including the corporate mainstream media, gives this petty, hate-filled, anti-semitic, hypocritical man so much credibility. He’s always been a media whore, always will be a media whore and should be rejected as a leader of any consequence. He falsely and prematurely convicted the Duke Lacrosse players, demanded Imus be fired for racist & sexist comments (ignoring his history of racist & anti-semitic comments) and made many false promises over the years. Can you say “hypocrite” boys and girls?
Michelle Malkin has more concerning Sharpton on her blog.

It’s finally over. The North Carolina Attorney General has declared Collin Finnerty, Reade Seligmann and David Evans innocent and has dropped all charges against them. These were charges that never should have been leveled against them in the first place but Mike Nifong abused his position and made the charges anyway although there clearly was no evidence to support the charges. La Shawn Barber has been covering this extensively and indepth since the beginning and has reaction to the events leading up to the press conference by the NC Attorney General. Defense lawyers will be holding their own press conference later today and I assume La Shawn will have info on that as well. I predict those who convicted the three players without a trial (Duke professors, New Black Panther Party, Malik Z. Shabazz, Jesse Jackson, etc.) will neither agree with the decision nor ever rescind their premature public convictions of the players.

Famed and well-loved cartoonist Johnny Hart died Saturday at the age of 76. I’ve always enjoyed reading B.C. and enjoyed Hart’s Christian messages in the comic strip. According to reports, B.C. will continue despite the loss of Johnny Hart. The world has lost a true gentleman, but Heaven now has him. I believe Jesus has met him and told him “Well done, faithful servant.” And if Heaven has a newspaper, Johnny Hart is probably creating comic strips for it bringing smiles again.
Many in the blogosphere have tributes to Johnny Hart. Michelle Malkin is among them and she has several links relating to Johnny Hart. Please take some time to read them.
