This Friday in November is the last day of hurricane season which the forecasters didn’t predict well. Saturday marks the first day of December leaving only 24 days left until Christmas. How this slipped past me is unknown. I usually keep up with this sort of thing but Florida A&M Rattlers officials fired head coach Rubin Carter last week and also accepted the resignation of athletic director Nelson Townsend. The Rattlers concluded the season with a dismal 3-8 record, including a 34-7 blowout loss to rival Bethune-Cookman in the season finale. Apparently that embarrassing loss was the final straw. So far no candidates for the position have been officially announced however there is a rumor about a former Grambling coach may be considered. Carter just finished his third season as head coach of the football team while Townsend is currently in his second year as Athletic Director. Both were hired by FAMU Interim President Castell Bryant.

For whatever it’s worth, Ole Miss has hired Houston Nutt as their new head football coach after firing Ed Orgeron. Nutt resigned from his head coaching position at the University of Arkansas even though he pulled out an amazing upset win over LSU. Arkansas officials claim they were planning on offering Orgeron an extension on his contract contradicting earlier reports that they were to fire him at the end of the season if not earlier. Apparently Orgeron got fed up with the nonsense behind the scene at UA and decided it was time to move on. Rumors are swirling about that Orgeron was quietly approached by Ole Miss officials several weeks before Nutt resigned offering him the job and if true, the NCAA might investigate. Nutt inherits a young Ole Miss team with a underclassman QB which will give him ample material to work with and improve upon.

Martin Merzer of the Miami Herald has written an article on hurricane predictions, their gross inaccuracies in recent years and the possible effects, both good and bad, being so off on the predictions can have on the general population. It reads, in part:
Two years ago, way under. Last year, way over. This year, still not right.
It’s been a stormy few years for William Gray, Philip Klotzbach and other scientists who predict total hurricane activity before each season begins, which raises fundamental questions as the 2007 season draws to an end on Friday:
Why do they bother? And given the errors — which can undermine faith in the entire hurricane warning system — are these full-season forecasts doing more harm than good?
”The seasonal hurricane forecasters certainly have a lot of explaining to do,” said Max Mayfield, former director of the National Hurricane Center.
With Florida being highly impacted by hurricanes, I imagine this will become a newsworthy topic for various television stations around the state as well as television stations along the Gulf Coast affected by past hurricanes especially Hurricane Katrina.
Admittedly, any weather forecasting is an inexact science but it seems hurricane forecasting is shrouded in mystery with computer models being mentioned often. However it needs to be examined why, in recent years, the forecasts have been so woefully off the mark. According to Merzer’s article the Gray-Klotzbach prediction team from Colorado State University “predicted that 17 named storms would grow into 9 hurricanes, 5 of which would be particularly intense, with winds above 110 mph.” They also made their first published prediction quite early in December of 2007. Merzer makes a valid point using a baseball analogy when he wrote it “would be like predicting — this past October — the Marlins’ precise win-loss record in 2008.” Not exactly strong assurance.
I realize that all such predictions are speculative based upon the best information available, but I would hope and expect those same climate scientists are examining their methods of predicting and, especially after three seasons of being way off the mark, they are working diligently to improve those methods of hurricane forcasting.

Since I was out of town for the Thanksgiving weekend, I was unable to create a football entry. Better late than never.
The Ole Miss-Mississippi State game, better know as the Egg Bowl, resulted in not only an exciting game but a very satisfying Bulldog win of 17-14. And apparently that was the final straw for Ole Miss officials and they fired Rebel head coach Ed Orgeron who had a dismal season. Media reports that some candidates to replace Orgeron include former Auburn coach Terry Bowden and East Carolina coach Skip Holtz along with Arkansas’ Houston Nutt might be a candidate, if he loses his job in Fayetteville but with his shocking win over LSU Nutt’s job may be safe for another year. Another candidate mentioned is Rick Neuheisel, the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. According to some media reports Ole Miss had an interview set up with Neuheisel the last time the job opened before it was called off at the last moment when the Ole Miss brass opted for Orgeron. I was thrilled with the Bulldogs’ win over Ole Miss and it appears that Sylvester Crooms’ reign as MSU’s head coach will continue. Since they are bowl eligible I eagerly anticipate what bowl to which they will be invited.
FSU lost to arch-rival UF. They looked absolutely terrible and the Gators outplayed them in every way. ‘Nuff said.
SLIGHTLY EMBARRASSED UPDATE: I just discovered that I misspelled the word “rivalry” in the header. It has now been corrected. Oh well.

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Hot” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. For me, the choice was obvious: hot sauces. The picture above is a small sample of hot sauces I have yet to taste. I have been using hot sauces on foods since I was a wee child. Back in Mississippi in the 60’s and 70’s the main hot sauce we used in our family was McIlhenny Brand Tabasco Sauce which we used in chili, gumbo, soups, stews, mashed potatos, etc. It wasn’t until I was after I was married that I discovered a plethora of hot sauces manufactured by large companies as well as other hot sauce aficionados. It was when I came across a small hot sauce shop in nearby Havana, Florida that I began to expand the number of hot sauces I used each with its own distinct flavor and heat level. Soon thereafter a larger hot sauce shop opened up in one of the local malls. I really enjoyed sampling new hot sauces and once I created my own web site, it was clear to me that I should devote a portion of my website to my opinions about hot sauces I have sampled as well as links to sites connected with specific hot sauces as well as online hot sauce shops. I’ve been writing reviews of hot sauces for many years now and I’ve been contacted on several occassions thus far by hot sauce creators to request I write a review for their sauce. Frankly, it’s flattering and I am more than willing to review their sauces if they are willing to send me a sample via snail mail. The variety of hot sauces is amazing and it’s always a pleasant adventure trying new hot sauces. I’ve long concluded that there is a hot sauce for everyone including mild sauces for the newbie who has little to no tolerance for heat all the way to sauces with incredibly high levels of heat for the experienced pepper-head who wants the hottest sauces around. The key is to know your limits and be willing to try some new sauces. Also it’s important to know the heat levels of various peppers. For example, a jalapeno pepper is not nearly as hot as a Naga Jolokia pepper but much hotter than a bell pepper. The heat level of peppers and hot sauces can be scientifically determined using the Scoville Scale with the higher number meaning a hotter pepper or sauce. The bell pepper is rated at 0 Scoville units, the jalapeno pepper is rated between 2,500–8,000 Scoville units and the Naga Jolokia pepper (a relatively newly discovered pepper) rates between 855,000–1,041,427 Scoville units and is recognized now as the hottest pepper on the planet (replacing the Red Savina that rated between 350,000–577,000 Scoville units. The only way to obtain something hotter than the Naga Jolokia is to chemically obtain the capsaicin from peppers. Doing that can bring about what is called pure capsaicin which rates between 15,000,000–17,000,000 Scoville units. Also known as “pure cap” many places selling it require the buyer to sign a waiver because pure cap can be dangerous and cause physical harm if misused. Many places will not sell pure cap to individuals; only to companies that manufacture hot sauces or food products.

Today, in the United States, is the holiday known as Thanksgiving. From a Christian standpoint, it is a holiday to give thanks to God for all the blessings upon which He has given. And both my wife and I are thankful for so many things. First and foremost, we are both eternally thankful for His Son who gave His life to pay the penalty for our sins. Our faith as Christians is in that. We are also thankful for all our relatives and friends. We are thankful that we are in fairly decent health. We are thankful that we have a home, earn enough to afford decent meals and have reliable transportation. We are thankful to live in the United States of America, the greatest country on the planet and we are thankful for all the military personel around the world defending our rights and freedoms 24/7. We are thankful for so many things.

Nationally Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host Phil Valentine
In a recent column published in the Tennessean newspaper, nationally syndicated radio talk show host Phil Valentine effectively skewers the ongoing Al Gore bowel movement in regards specifically to the global warming nonsense being spewed forth like coal chimneys running past maximun output to deliver energy to China. A portion of Valentine’s column makes some excellent and salient points:
Al Gore, the Jim Jones of this new religious cult, preaches doom and gloom from his pettifogger pulpit, all the while living the lifestyle of an energy hog. He actually uses twice the amount of electricity in one month at his Nashville home than the average household uses in an entire year. He has two homes in Tennessee, one in Virginia, at least. He flies all over the world on his Magical Hysteria Tour, sucking down resources and belching out tons of carbon, all to tell us we need to conserve. We’re trying to make ends meet just to afford gas in our cars while Al Gore has a carbon footprint the size of Sasquatch. And no one seems to care.
The Branch Algorians read from the Gospel of Al and never question a word. The movement’s devil is carbon dioxide, an essential component of photosynthesis and the substance we all exhale with every breath. Understand this: CO2 is not a pollutant. However, Gore and the radical environmentalists have been quite successful in convincing people that smog and CO2 are the same. They are not. CO2 has nothing whatsoever to do with the smog or haze we see over our cities. There is absolutely no evidence that CO2 has anything to do with any kind of warming.
The Gore Kool-Aid drinkers will point to “all these scientists” but can’t give you one link between CO2 and any kind of climate change. As the founder of The Weather Channel, John Coleman, recently put it, global warming is the greatest scam in history.
Valentine also points out the extremism of the global warming mentality using Professor Roger Gottlieb as an example and mentions that Gottlieb is also very pro-socialism and manages to link Gottlieb’s rabid global warming “chicken-little-ism” with his socialistic bent.
The bottom line is that there is more credible evidence showing that global warming is a natural, cyclical occurance of which humans have absolutely no control. It’s going to happen whether we like it or not. And sometime down the road, there will be a period of global cooling? Why? Because that’s what nature DOES. I am old enough to remember Newsweek’s big exposé on the coming ice age due to global cooling. That was back in the 70’s and even the networks picked up on it. It was human beings’ fault, they collectively cried. Well, they were wrong then just as they are wrong now. The global warming hysteria is just that…hysteria. I didn’t buy the hysteria of global cooling on the 70’s. I didn’t buy the Y2K hysteria at the turn of the century. And I’m not buying into the global warming hysteria now.
Folks, “carbon offsets” are the 21st century equivalent of the junk bond scandals of the 80’s. Anyone spending money on that nonsense is throwing it all away in order to feel good. It accomplishes nothing but to line the pockets of greedy scam artists like Al Gore and others. I’m not buying into it and neither should any rational person.
However Al Gore and the rest of the global warming alarmists are proving P.T. Barnum wrong: it’s more like every 15 seconds.

Dick Wilson, the actor best known for playing the part of Mr. Whipple on years’ worth of television ads for Charmin, died Sunday at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California. He was 91.
You’ve probably seen him on television in many supporting roles and character roles such as the recurring drunk character on Bewitched. Wilson appeared in more than 500 commercials for Charmin from 1964 to 1985. Wilson’s acting career lasted nearly 70 years.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that the Mr. Whipple character, which Dick Wilson portrayed for many years, is one of the most recognizable faces in the history of American advertising,” Charmin brand manager Dennis Legault said in a statement. “Dick deserves much of the credit for Charmin’s success.”
Remember, please don’t squeeze the Charmin.

Just spent Saturday doing some extra (and hopefully final) Christmas shopping on the south side of Tallahassee and had intended to go to my favorite local used CD store, CD Warehouse, because they always put out a fairly large number of used Christmas CD’s and the guy that works there KNOWS I am a Christmas CD junkie.
We got some Christmas wrapping materials from Michael’s craft store. Prior to that we stopped by Bed Bath & Beyond and got some bath stuff for my Momma and ended up buying more stuff for my nephew, my inlaws and some friends. Now we’re going to have to be a little late on the mortgage payment. Oh well.
Anyway, the last stop on the shopping trip was CD Warehouse and I pulled in the strip mall where they are, drove up to the front of the store and…
Where’s the heck is the store???
Even though the sign on the marquee by the road was there and the sign on the storefront was there, the store that WAS there was some sort of fru-fru women’s gift shop. So from my cell phone, Nancy called and found that although there were 5 stores previously, now there are only two and NEITHER of them were close enough to where we presently were to make the trip.
So we went with a quickly constructed backup plan: Vinyl Fever.
Now in early 2006, Tallahassee’s Vinyl Fever was sold to a Tampa-based record chain and they promised they would not only not change what was already there in terms of used CD’s but due to their overall volume they would actually greatly expand the used CD inventory. And true to their word, they did. However when Christmas of 2006 approached, their used Christmas selection really sucked. It was miniscule at best and most everything they had was stuff I already owned. They had a plethora of new CD’s and ridiculously high prices but unless if was something I just HAD to have immediately (and in 2006 there weren’t anything like that) I’d wait for ebay auctions or see if the CD Warehouse stores had a better selection. And they always did.
This past Saturday, we went with the hastily constructed backup plan of going to Vinyl Fever even though I strongly suspected their used CD selection would once again me miniscule.
I was right.
And as it was in 2006 their new Christmas CD selection was pretty large. Not as large as last year but a nice selection nonetheless. Most of it I already own but I did find two “I gotta get NOW regardless of the high new price” selections: “Christmas With The Smithereens” by The Smithereens (one of my all-time favorite groups) and “Songs For Christmas”, a boxed set from Sufjan Stevens. I also found a handful of used CD’s to get fairly cheap: Lee Ann Womack’s “The Season For Romance”; Universal/Motown’s 20th Century Masters collections CDs from James Brown and Stevie Wonder (2 separate CDs - not duets); the soundtrack for the movie “Christmas With The Kranks”; and a various artists Christmas CD entitled “City On A Hill: It’s Christmas Time.” So the slightly-out-of-the-way trip wasn’t a total bust.
Oh I almost forgot to mention; prior to the scheduled Christmas shopping, Nancy and I stopped by Staples (an office supply store) to pick up some stuff for both our jobs and also some Scotch tape for wrapping. We also always check the clearance section to see if they have anything interesting in it (nothing that day). On our way to the checkout counter we found a small bin of discounted Christmas CD’s and I bought some good’uns: “Christmas…Back In Indiana” by The Bill Gaither Trio; “Songs For Christmas” by Andy Williams; & “That Special Time Of The Year” by Gladys Knight & The Pips.
I truly would love to host another Christmas eve radio show of varied Christmas music like I did in 1995. My collection has grown greatly since then and I could easily pull an 8+ hour shift and present a much better show than the couple of stations locally that change to an all-Christmas music format for the holidays. I know that I would present a much better variety of Christmas music than they, or any of the other stations, could with just my own personal collection of almost 600 Christmas CDs. I tried this last year since I was unemployed and had plenty of time on my hands. I even put together fancy (yet inexpensive) promotional kits that I sent out to all the regional stations in late August with follow-ups letters in late October and also around Thanksgiving but had no takers. One station’s PD of the “lite jazz” station did email me back and told me he already had plans to go to a satellite service for the holiday music but would love to have me do the show this year. I planned on contacting him to take him up on the offer but two months ago I got a fulltime job with the State of Florida (after a long time - over a year - of not having a fulltime job anywhere) and being the low person on the list in my section, I’m slated to work Christmas Eve. Not Christmas Eve during the day like a normal 9-5 job but the ACTUAL Christmas Eve. ‘Til 11pm. Not that I’m complaining. I’d much rather have the job than still be unemployed and being able to do the Christmas Eve show. However, in my heart, I still hope to do the Christmas Eve radio show someday and impress the station so much that they make it an annual event.

As a Christian, I love God first and foremost, but for purposes of Photohunt, I don’t have a photo of Him. So I am going with my second love; my wife. We’ve been married for 21 years and 5 months. Tonight is the first freeze of fall in our area. A mild freeze but enough to take the porch plants into the garage and cover the ones too big to move. But I look on the bright side - it’s Open Trackback Friday and I welcome you to participate! Today, my wife and I traveled over to Chattahoochee, Florida to revisit the original Victory Bridge since I was informed by the city manager that it was permissible to walk on the bridge and take photographs. We originally went there last June but I only took pictures from the ground and only up to the beginning of the bridge. After receiving word from the city manager informing me that it was okay to go onto the bridge itself, I made mental plans to go back once the weather turned cool again. Today was a perfect day to do so. I took plenty of photographs and posted them on my online photo album.
We also visited the nearby Jim Woodruff dam which was built on the Apalachicola River and created Lake Seminole.
