Truth In Advertising? January 26th, 2008

Last Christmas some good friends of mine gave me a very nice desk accessories set for my cubicle at work. I really appreciated it. Here’s what the box looks like…

    Desk Accessories

Nice, huh? Well, just before I opened the box to remove the comments, I noticed the fine print in the lower left-hand corner of the front of the box. You can’t make it out from the above photo so I took a closeup…

    Desk Accessories

What? No accessories in the box of desk accessories? Truth in advertising? Was the box empty? Devoid of accessories? Well, actually no. The desk accessories were indeed inside and they are extremely nice. Whomever designed the box, including the print, was obviously referring to the accessories to the accessories (i.e. — paper clips, paper, pens, etc.) but the unintentional humor was noted.

    PhotoHunt 94: Old-fashioned January 26th, 2008

    PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Old-fashioned” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, I am featuring a Tallahassee, Florida landmark although it is actually 12 miles north of Tallahassee on Centerville Road (Leon County Road 151).

    Bradley's Country Store
Bradley’s Country Store As Seen From The Roadside

In 1910 Grandma Mary Bradley sold homemade sausage from her own kitchen and served the people of the surrounding areas of Felkel and Miccosukee.. From that humble beginning rose Bradley’s Country Store built in 1927. It stands now just as it did back then. In April of 1984, Bradley’s Country Store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are famous for their country sausage and country milled grits. Their sausages are made from high quality fresh pork, seasoned with the family recipe developed almost a century ago and smoked using oak and green hickory. It’s delicious sausage. You can purchase their sausage ready to cook or, if you’re impatient, you can but some already cooked to eat on the premises. They are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm and on Saturdays from 8am to 5pm. They are always closed on Sundays and on major holidays. If you do not reside in Tallahassee or are not planning on visiting anytime soon, you can order their products online and have them shipped to you. However keep in mind that Bradley’s Country Store’s shipping season runs from mid-October through early May. They do not ship sausage during the hotter months of the year.

    Bradley's Country Store
Bradley’s Country Store Directly In Front

I went out there to take the photographs and while I was there, I got a sausage dog for lunch. I can honestly tell you that their sausages are extremely delicious.

If you’re in the Tallahassee area, I strongly recommend taking a little 15-minute sidetrip up Centerville Road to visit the historical Bradley’s Country Store, getting some Bradley’s sausage dogs and set on the porch for a spell. You won’t regret it.

But if you can’t make it to Florida’s Capital city, try ordering some Bradley’s Sausage and maybe even some coutry milled grits and cornmeal.

Hillary LOVES A Man In Uniform? January 26th, 2008

Hillary Loves A Man In Uniform?
    Courtesy of Military Motivator

This is funny on so many levels considering Hillary’s contempt for military members in the White House during her husband’s Presidency. She treated them shabbily and with little to no respect. And we’re supposed to believe she supports the military now? What’s the saying? “A leopard can’t change it’s spots.”

    Open Trackback Friday

One weekend away from Super Bowl XLII where the New York Giants led by Eli Manning will face off against the unbeaten New England Patriots led by Tom Brady. Well, depending upon whom you listen, maybe NOT Tom Brady. Is he injured? Is he okay? A week is a long time for recovering and the Super Bowl being THE game all NFL players aspire to play will probably make any nagging injuries minuscule for a couple of hours. As the saying goes, “pain is temporary…glory lasts forever.” On a related note, that Giants-Packers playoff game was awesome. I just hope the Super Bowl isn’t anticlimatic. With that said, it’s once again Open Trackback Friday! It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

    PhotoHunt 93: Important January 19th, 2008

    PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Important” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, I am featuring something very personal.

I thought about the topic of the PhotoHunt for this week and many things of importance came to mind: my family, my job, the Super Bowl…stuff like that. Then the most important thing came to mind…

    Bicentennial Bible

My relationship with God. As a Christian there is nothing more important than God. I try to put Him first in my life at all times. I’ll admit I don’t always do a good job of doing so, but I am trying and with God’s help, I will get better each and every day. Since God is not known for posing for photographs, I thought about what would be a good representation of my relationship with God. The first idea seemed to me to be the best: the Holy Bible. God’s scriptures to His children. Those words contained in the Bible teach me more each time I read from it and I believe makes my personal relationship with God stronger and closer. I place God above family, friends, events, material possessions, even myself.

So that is my entry for this week’s PhotoHunt and the reasons why.

    Open Trackback Friday

January is sure flying by quite quickly or at least it seems so to me. Politics is already disgusting me to no end so I’m going to escape that rubbish by watching the NFL Conference Championship Games: the Chargers @ the Patriots and the Giants @ the Packers. History shows that the home team has the distinct advantage. I think the Patriots will win their game but I’m torn in the Giants-Packers game. On one hand, I would like to see Eli Manning make it to the Super Bowl (being that he’s my Saints connection — Archie Manning, former longtime Saints QB is Eli’s Daddy for those who don’t know) but on the other hand, the Packers are one of the four teams tied at second-place on my favorite teams list (the others being the Raiders, the Bears and the Vikings). So I’m going to have to cheer for the Packers (a whole team vs one player — team wins out). Therefore I am hoping for a Patriots-Packers Super Bowl. If that does come to fruition, my heart will be on the Packers’ side while my head will be telling me the Patriots are going to win it all this year. Hopefully it will be an exciting game. Be that as it may it is once again Open Trackback Friday! The Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem - Broken? Or Just Not Communicating? January 15th, 2008

    The Truth Laid Bear

Count myself a bit on the aggravated side today. Actually for several days regarding the ecosystem maintained by The Truth Laid Bear. Like many bloggers, I am curious how my blog ranks among other blogs and The Truth Laid Bear (henceforth referred to as TTLB) is a free system ranking blogs based on certain criteria. However for some unknown reason, information concerning my blog hasn’t been updated for several days. For example:

    The Truth Laid Bear

This is a screencap of the average daily visits measured by TTLB. This screencap was taken shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, January 15th, 2008. According to this graph, my visits have alledgedly remained static since December 31st, 2007. However I know this to be not true since I use a sitecounter that shows normal varations of the daily visits. Other evidence of problems is the following:

    The Truth Laid Bear

This is a screencap also taken shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning, January 15th, 2008. It shows the most recent post according to TTLB is from December 25th. However as you can clearly see, I’ve posted plenty more material since then. Why doesn’t anything past December 25th show up? I first noticed this lack of updates and went to their support area of TTLB to let someone know. According to their support ticket info, a response usually occurs within 24 hours. Not in my case…

    The Truth Laid Bear

As you can see in this screencap (also taken shortly after midnight on January 15th, 2008) I registered my query on January 2nd just after 8:00 pm. It’s now been over 12 days and still no reply.

I’ve checked other blogs’ info as maintained by TTLB and some of the ones I looked at seem to be updating on a daily basis while others are “flatlining” as well. So why is mine suddenly frozen in time? I realize you get what you paid for an TTLB’s service is free so I guess I can’t expect timely responses nor lightning fast service, but a little help from TTLB would be nice. I have no idea whom I can contact directly since I can’t find any email info on TTLB’s site. However the sole clue I discovered that may indicate some sort of problem on their end is found on the TTLB’s “Blogsophere Ecosystem” area. The following screencap (also captured shortly after midnight on January 15th, 2008) gives the telling message:

    The Truth Laid Bear

It would be nice if there were some sort of information given on TTLB updating their situation. Is the 12/21/07 error the source of my problem? Is it affecting blogs at random? Is my blog having problems for unrelated reasons? Anyone know anything about TTLB current status? Will little Timmy be saved from the bottom of the dry well?

Okay, that last question was being facetious, but I’m curious if something can be done to get my blog thawed out in the TTLB Blogosphere Ecosystem. And if it is something I need to do on my end or is it something on TTLB’s end that they are currently trying to address.

If anyone hears something, please leave a comment or email me. I would greatly appreciate it.

Bobby Jindal — Inaugurated As Louisiana Governor Today January 14th, 2008

    Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal

Today Republican Bobby Jindal officially took over the office of Governor of the State of Louisiana succeeding Democrat Kathleen Blanco, who did not run for re-election. I am hopeful that Jindal will successfully follow through with his election promises especially to improve ethics in Louisiana politics and to get rid of corruption in the state. Both will be a massive undertaking since political corruption is so ingrained in Louisiana and has been for many, many decades. Michelle Malkin has more about Jindal and his inauguration.

Florida United Methodist Children’s Home Centennial Celebration January 13th, 2008

Florida United Methodist Children's Home Centennial Celebration

In 2008 the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home will observe its centennial year. For 100 years the Children’s Home has been looking after the special needs of Florida’s children and families. They were founded by the Methodists of Florida in 1908. They plan to celebrate with special events, projects and commemorative materials. The flier shown above is just one of many events planned in 2008. Other projects include a historical video, a historical exhibit in their Archives Room, a written history, time capsule, historical marker and more. Additional materials that will be available are a centennial calendar, historical brochure, promotional items and keepsakes such as bookmarks and other small items. They are currently working on a new website that will include a section about their history.

    PhotoHunt 92: Skinny January 12th, 2008

    PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Skinny” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, I am featuring myself. Although I don’t qualify as “skinny” per se, I do qualify as skinnier. Let me explain.

On March 2, 2006 I underwent a surgical procedure called Roux-N-Y gastric bypass or Roux-N-Y gastrojejunal bypass. The stomach is divided into a small upper part and a large lower part. The small upper part of the stomach now acts as a new stomach. This part of the stomach is also called the stomach pouch or gastric pouch. Usual size of the gastric pouch is 1 to 2 ounces after surgery. The size of an average stomach is equal to the size of a person’s head, or 6 cups, and the size of the stomach pouch after gastric bypass is equal to the size of a person’s thumb. About one-third of the small intestine is bypassed, and 2″ length of intestine is connected from the small stomach pouch to the rest of the intestines. The lower part of the stomach and its intestine will no longer be used. Roughly two-thirds of the small intestine is still used for digestion and absorption of food after food passes from the small stomach pouch into the small intestine.

My surgery was performed laparoscopically by Dr. Eliot Sieloff, one of the premier bariatric surgeons in the United States. He made 5 small incisions on my belly, all less than an inch in length, to perform this surgery. This made post-surgery discomfort very minimal (my only major pain was when I accidentally rolled onto one of the incisions while I was asleep — that’ll wake you up in a hurry). Before the surgery I weighed over 420 pounds (I say “over” because the scale only went up to 420) and I wore size 64 pants (and those were kinda tight in the waist on me) and a 4-5XL shirt. By the spring of 2007 I had lost a massive amount of weight as you can see in the photograph below.

Carl: Before in 2006 & After in 2007
That’s me with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush on the left.

I need to update the “before and after” graphic I made to reflect my current condition. I am now down to 245 pounds which is only about 25 pounds away from what I weighed in high school. I now wear a size 44-46 pair of pants (depending upon the cut) and an XL-XXL shirt (also depending on the cut). More often than not, XXL shirts are pretty baggy on me but I can’t afford to start buying more clothes so I put up with “baggy” for the time being. My waist is actually below 44 inches but due to saggy skin and fat roll below the waist, I still have to wear 44-46 size pants. Thus far, I have lost over 175 pounds (that’s Paris Hilton, all her luggage AND her little dog Toto, too).

In the grand scheme of things, I’m really not skinny, but compared to what I was in the spring of 2006, I definitely am skinnier.

    Shubuta, Mississippi January 12th, 2008

While bored one evening, I wound up on YouTube and was searching for something interesting to watch and came across a video someone made about Shubuta, Mississippi, a small town in southeastern Mississippi that I fondly remember. My Daddy grew up there. My grandparents live there. When we lived in northwest Mississippi in the area know as “the Delta” we went down to Shubuta to stay with my paternal grandparents at least a couple times each year even though it was about a 6 hour drive from Cleveland, Mississippi. I lived in nearby Waynesboro and actually earned by Eagle Rank in the Boy Scouts while in the only Scout troop in Shubuta back in the late 70’s. I actually received by Eagle in the Shubuta Methodist Church about 35 or so years after my Daddy received his in the very same church. The buildings shown in the video were all there when I was living in the area although all of them had different purposes. For example, the building which is now the town hall was the original Bank of Shubuta building. The green building that is boarded up was a physician’s office back in the 70’s. It’s nice to see images of the little town. It’s gotten smaller since I lived nearby and may eventually fade forever sometime in the future. But it sure was nice to run across the video on YouTube. It brought back some fond memories.

Bhutto’s Death Shows Who Our Candidates Really Are January 9th, 2008

Orson Scott Card is an author whose works my wife enjoys reading. He also apparently a pretty smart cookie to boot. He writes a weekly column called WorldWatch which can be viewed at the Rhino Times (North Carolina) and also at The Ornery American.

His latest column (”Bhutto’s Death Shows Who Our Candidates Really Are”) is an analysis of the major Presidential candidates based upon their public reactions to the assasination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan. It reads in part:

The death of Benazir Bhutto is a very sad thing for her family, a tragedy for her political party, and a historical complication that might well have far-reaching — and devastating — effects on Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the overall war against Fascist Islam.

But that’s not what I’m going to talk about right now. Because as we enter 2008, we’re going to get into the presidential campaign in a big way. And the responses of the various candidates to Benazir Bhutto’s death tells us an enormous amount of valuable information about how they would do as president of the United States.

After all, the only aspect of the government that the president absolutely controls is our foreign policy, ranging from diplomacy to warfare. Congress can meddle, mostly by giving mixed or negative signals to foreign powers — but governments of other countries are very much aware of the difference between the president and Congress when it comes to international relations.

You can read the whole article here. I’m not sure if his analysis is on point entirely, but it does raise some interesting points concerning the candidates and foreign policy.
