On this Memorial Day, I’d like to quote the third stanza of “America, The Beautiful” written by Katharine Lee Bates.
O beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
‘Til all success be nobleness, and ev’ry gain divine!
In World War II, he whispered, I was wounded by a blast.
As he began his story, reminiscing of his past.
I was just a boy back then, I lied about my age.
To get into the Army, and fight for the USA
I love this country very much, it’s still the very best.
And I would fight to keep it free, and safe from foreign pest.
We won that war, and I came home, my wounds had healed enough,
To reenlist with other men. The Army made us tough.
Then a little flare up, in Korea called us out.
A threat against our freedom, spreading fear without a doubt.
There I caught a bullet, when I tried to save a friend.
Another wound for Uncle Sam, they sent me home to mend.
“Soldier have you had enough?” my Sergeant said to me.
“Or do you want another tour, if ever there’s to be?”
We would train and fight again, if ever it need be,
Because we love America, we’ll fight to keep it free.
It didn’t take too long, before my boys were off again.
We were shipped off to a war, we thought would never end.
I didn’t understand it much, if it was wrong or right.
But, I was a US Marine, and my country said, “Go fight.”
I never questioned orders, that were sent from up above.
I did it for America, the country, that I love.
I fought to keep my country safe, again, in Viet Nam.
Then, wounded I came home again, a victim of napalm.
My fighting days were over now, and, I had given all.
But, some had given more than me, their names are on a wall.
I am now well up in years, a Marine old and worn.
I could only sit and pray, as I watched Desert Storm.
So proud of our boys over there, who stood for what is right.
Freedom is the battle cry, the reason why they fight.
Young soldiers fight for liberty, protecting freedom’s bliss.
Old Marines dream of by-gone-days, while fighting loneliness.
We were heroes in our day, he said, and then he sighed.
Forgotten in some VA home, and all my friends have died.
I never ask for anything, just wanted to live free.
But, if you read this story, there are many just like me.
Who fought to keep our country, safe and free from every foe.
Only to come home again, and have no place to go.
Sadly, when the limelight fails, heroes fade away.
Some men fight the silent battles, ’till their dying day.
Please remember what it took, and what we had to pay.
And join with us remembering, on this Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is special, it is not just summer’s start.
The reason that we have this day, should be etched on your heart.
Lives were lost, and young men died, to keep this country free.
So, take a moment on that day, to meditate with me.
Remember all those valiant men, and women who fought for,
The lifestyle that you now enjoy, because they went to war.
—James A. Kisner
Memorial Day Poem
Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He’d stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers’ tears?
How many pilots’ planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves?
No, freedom isn’t free.
I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant “Amen,”
When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn’t free.
Memorial Day
by Michelle R. Christman
As we stand here looking
At the flags upon these graves
Know these flags represent
A few of the true American brave
They fought for their Country
As man has through all of time
Except that these soldiers lying here
Fought for your country and mine
As we all are gathered here
To pay them our respect
Let’s pass this word to others
It’s what they would expect
I’m sure that they would do it
If it were me or you
To show we did not die in vein
But for the red, white and blue.
Let’s pass on to our children
And to those who never knew
What these soldiers died for
It’s the least we can do
Let’s not forget their families
Great pain they had to bear
Losing a son, father or husband
They need to know we still care
No matter which war was fought
On the day that they died
I stand here looking at these flags
Filled with American pride.
So as the bugler plays out Taps
With its sweet and eerie sound
Pray for these soldiers lying here
In this sacred, hallowed ground.
Take home with you a sense of pride
You were here Memorial Day.
Celebrating the way Americans should
On this solemnest of days.

Arlington
composed by Jeremy Spillman & Dave Turnbull
I never thought that this is where I’d settle down
I thought I’d die an old man back in my hometown
They gave me this plot of land
Me and some other men for a job well done
There’s a big white house
Sits on a hill just up the road
The man inside he cried the day they brought me home
They folded up a flag and told my Mom and Dad
We’re proud of your son
And I’m proud to be on this peaceful piece of property
I’m on sacred ground and I’m in the best of company
I’m thankful for those thankful for the things I’ve done
I can rest in peace, I’m one of the chosen ones
I made it to Arlington
I remember Daddy brought me here when I was eight
We searched all day to find out where my Granddad lay
And when we finally found that cross
He said, son, this is what it cost to keep us free
Now here I am a thousand stones away from him
He recognized me on the first day I came in
And it gave me a chill when he clicked his heels and saluted me
And I’m proud to be on this peaceful piece of property
I’m on sacred ground and I’m in the best of company
I’m thankful for those thankful for things I’ve done
I can rest in piece, I’m one of the chosen ones
I made it to Arlington
And everytime I hear twenty-one guns
I know they brought another hero home to us
We’re thankful for those thankful for the things we’ve done
We can rest in peace, ’cause we are the chosen ones
We made it to Arlington
Yeah, dust to dust
Don’t cry for us
We made it to Arlington
A Soldier’s Farewell
by John J. Rigo
It is time to say goodbye.
I can see my sadness in your eyes.
Is this the goodbye kiss that will aways
be in your memory?
Press closer to me,
imprint my soul with your being.
Please do not look into my eyes,
the sadness will always be there,
until we are one again,
in our happiness.
TAPS
by Major General Daniel Butterfield
Fading light dims the sight,
And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright.
From afar drawing nigh — Falls the night.
Day is done, gone the sun,
From the lake, from the hills, from the sky.
All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.
Then good night, peaceful night,
Till the light of the dawn shineth bright,
God is near, do not fear — Friend, good night.
Twenty One Steps
by Thomas Holmquist
Arlington where our unknown soldier lies
The place to honor those who gave their lives
Those that died that generations be free
May we remember them through eternity
This Unknown Soldier guarded day and night
By the choice of a few and with all their might
To show mankind their respect and dignity
To those who defended our lives and liberty
Twenty one steps, he takes twenty one steps
Eyes locked in honor for the soldier he guards
And twenty one seconds before he turns
To honor the soldiers who never returned
Twenty one steps until the end of time
For our lost soldiers we cannot find
They gave their lives for you and me
The price paid to preserve our dignity
So let’s take twenty one steps, just twenty one steps
Lock our eyes in honor for our soldiers that died
And think for twenty one seconds about their sacrifice
To preserve our freedom and our children’s lives

8th Of November
by Kenny Alphin & John Rich
He said goodbye to his momma
As he left South Dakota
To fight for the Red, White, and Blue
He was 19 ‘n green with a new M-16
Just doin’ what he had to do.
He was dropped in the jungle
Where the choppers would rumble
With the smell of napalm in the air
Then the sargeant said, “Look up ahead”
Like a dark, evil cloud
Twelve hundred came down
on him and 29 more
They fought for their lives
But most of them died
In the 173rd Airborne
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin’
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin’ down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin’ that day
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November
Now he’s 58
And his ponytail’s grey
But the battle still plays in his head
He limps when he walks,
But he’s strong when he talks
About the shrapnel they left in leg
He puts on a grey suit
Over his airborne tattoo
And he ties it on one time a year
And remembers the fallen,
As he orders a tall one
And swallows it down with his tears
On the 8th of November,
The angels were cryin’
As they carried his brothers away
With the fire rainin’ down
And the Hell all around
There were few men left standin’ that day
Saw the eagle fly,
Through a clear, blue sky
1965, the 8th of November

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Shoes” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, even though I tried tremendously, I just could not think outside the shoebox (kudos to my wife for that line), so I decided to just take a simple photo of my shoe tree.
But…
Due to the shape of my feet, about the only brand of shoes that fit me best and most consistently is New Balance which makes up the bulk of the shoes I own. With that said, as I took the photo of the shoe tree I noticed a lonely pair of shoes at the bottom of the shoe tree that I almost completely forgot. It was a pair that I purchased from a Converse outlet store almost 20 years ago in Lake Park, Georgia. I bought them because in my opinion they were the strangest pair of sneakers I have ever seen. They were in the very back of the store on the shelves marked “clearance” and were only $5.00 for the pair.
So ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, cats and dogs, I present to you…
THE ELMER FUDD CONVERSE SNEAKERS
They actually fit and are comfortable. But the tops actually fold down and are held in place by two snaps. If you care to you can wear them with the tops up which come up to just below the knee. The outside is denim while the insides of the shoe are flannel. I’ve never seen any like this before and I’ve never seen anything like this since. I’ve only worn them a handful of times and only for halloween or costuming. So whaddya think?

…sponsored by Wet Wipes for those embarrassing oopsie moments in your pants.
Hillary, in clear desperation, opened her mouth and firmly inserted her foot.
While addressing the editorial board of the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader newspaper, she said:
“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don’t understand it.”
So she has to be present just in case Barack ******* Obama gets shot? She is certainly becoming more and more desperate daily and that remark is one of the more inane (if not insane) she has made thus far. Don’t allow her to have a firearm and keep her away from sharp objects.

Memorial Day weekend 2008 is here and I for one want to thank all armed forces personal past and present for their service and sacrifice to this country to keep us free. It is greatly appreciated and not taken for granted by myself nor my family. To start things off it’s Open Trackback Friday yet again. It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

It appears the uber-liberals in Congress are feeling more at ease with their socialism confident that one of their own will be elected in November thereby allowing them to drop the facade they have had for years.
Case in point:
During the hearings in Washington with officials from evil petroleum companies, one of the petroleum officials basically lectured the Congresscritters present reminding them of their refusal to actually do something to expand oil exploration, refining, and drilling. In doing so the pretroleum official rightly pointed out that due to the law of supply and demand, if they continued to refuse to expand U.S. oil exploration, refining, and drilling the price of fuel would continue to rise and nothing could be done about it.
Apparently this infurated Maxine Waters who angrily responsed, “Well this liberal will be all about socializing, uh, uh, ….(she paused as she attempts to think of a more appropriate word — she couldn’t) taking over, and the government running all of your companies!”
Here’s the video:
Link: sevenload.com
Not only did she use the dreaded S-word (socializing) but even though she tried and failed to backtrack she still declared she is for total government control of all American petroleum companies. She must be taking her cues from Hugo Chavez. And does she truly think the govenment can do a better job running multinational oil companies than it did with Hurricane Katrina, social security, or welfare?
There are many, many more socialists in Congress than just Waters. Pelosi and Reid are two of the better known. And George Soros would just love it if he could get them all in his back pocket. He may already have. However if either Clinton or Obama get elected POTUS then expect the masks to be lowered and the socialists in Congress to finally delcare their true colors with great pride while they increase taxes, spend more, take over many things like healthcare (and screw it up in the process) and generally damage the country so much that it will take decades to undo if conservatives manage to take back control at some point.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain is scheduled to spend time this Memorial Day weekend at his ranch in Sedona, Arizona, with several potential vice-presidential running mates. According to McCain campaign officials, 10 couples have been invited.
“It’s a purely social weekend with friends, something he obviously likes to do from time to time,” said Mark Salter, a senior adviser to McCain.
Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, former EBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman and FedEx Corp. Chief Executive Frederick W. Smith are also expected to attend, according to unnamed McCain campaign officials and Republican sources who also asked not to be named when discussing the guest list.
Reports that I have personally read and heard state consistently that the three frontrunners for the VP slot are Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Florida Governor Charlie Christ, and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
Thus far, no official word has been released if these meetings will mark the beginnings of whittling down the possibilities for vice-president, although conventional wisdom indicates it will.
Jindal press secretary Melissa Sellers didn’t mention the vice presidency in a statement confirming Jindal’s visit.
“The governor looks forward to joining Sen. McCain and his other guests this weekend, and he values this as another opportunity to meet with a national leader and the potential next president of the United States to discuss issues important to the future growth of Louisiana,” Sellers said.
I feel that Jindal, although an obvious up-and-comer in the Republican party and a staunch conservative more in the Ronald Reagan mold, is too necessary for the future of Louisiana. He was only rather recently elected and has not had much of an opportunity to clean up the corruption in Louisiana as he promised in his campaign platform. Furthermore, his inexperience in national politics would be an issue the Democrats would undoubtedly raise since McCain has questioned Obama’s lack of experience several times in recent speeches. If Jindal is successful in his term as Louisiana Governor and is re-elected, then his value as a VP candidate would definitely increase. Plus, it would not be surprising if he entered the Presidential fray at the next available opportunity. On the other hand, if he is even moderately unsuccessful at fulfilling his campaign promises, the odds of a vice-presidental position in his future would be greatly reduced.
Charlie Crist has been frequently mentioned as a potential running mate and as former Attorney General and current Governor of the State of Florida would be a good match for McCain. He would appeal to the southern vote and his experience would be a welcome asset. However, my guess is that the better and most likely position for which Crist would be most suited would be the AG slot in a McCain cabinet.
Which leaves Mitt Romney.
During the Republican primaries, Romney and McCain squared off in debates and speeches on many occasions, sometimes seemingly at each others’ throats. However ever since McCain became the Republican’s nominee, the two have been referring to the other in nothing but glowing terms. Such is politics. Of the three, McCain brings up Romney’s name most often which leads me to believe he is more than likely the actual frontrunner for the VP position.
I don’t doubt the weekend get-together will be mainly a social gathering of prominent politicians, business executives and their wives; however, common sense and political savvy would indicate much more will be discussed than just relaxed small-talk. I believe this gathering is a major step in McCain’s choices for his running mate and cabinet.

My wife and I went to the Tri-State Avian Society’s annual exotic bird fair Saturday morning with the intention of purchasing some new toys for our rather spoiled little cockatiel named Cheech. We got him the type of toys he likes best plus some food and a new type of perch to try (he loves the perch). I took a camera along and here are some of the sights:

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Candy” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. Without further ado, here is my entry for this week’s PhotoHunt:
So what does a picture of a custom, four-wheel drive vehicle from a local car show from a couple of weeks back have to do with candy?.
Look again closely…
It’s CANDY apple red!
Ever since I had my gastric bypass surgery. candy has been something I have avoided. Too much sugar can trigger what is known as “dumping syndrome.” Suffice to say dumping syndrome is no fun so I avoid it as much as I can. So I thought “outside of the box” on this week’s photohunt.

This is DR. (and I use that title quite loosely) James David Manning, Ph.D. (and I also use Ph.D. loosely as well) of Atlah (which apparently stands for “All The Land Anointed Holy”) World Ministries (”World” if Harlem in NYC is now considered the world). His website is comical in places and would be hilarious but Manning takes it all seriously. However Manning comes off more as a clown than a man of God. In fact, his background is suspect. For example, this so-called “Ph.D” (in philosophy) was received (nowhere does it say it was earned) from…get this, folks…
Atlah Theological Seminary!!!
Who founded Atlah Theological Seminary?
Why, James David Manning, of course.
Who currently runs Atlah Theological Seminary?
Why, James David Manning, of course.
So in essence, the clown James David Manning gave himself a Ph.D.!
I mentioned that areas of the ATLAH website are comical. An example is what is referred to as The Witch Doctor Project which states as some of its purposes:
We will seek to examine and expose the role of the witch doctors on the west coast of Africa in the selling of slaves to America. These representatives will be called to a state of repentance for the lies they have committed that have weakened the Black race. Unless this is done, the curse will remain on the African population.
The nation of Africa is facing tremendous obstacles that cannot be solved with money. We must remove the false leaders of the day like “The Magnificent Seven” - Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Bill Clinton, T.D. Jakes, Louis Farrakan, Don King, and Cornell West - and replace them with men and women who will repent, and preach righteousness, and truth.
Witch doctors selling slaves? And what the heck does that got anything to do with Jackson, Al Sharpton, Bill Clinton, T.D. Jakes, Louis Farrakan, Don King, and Cornell West? And how the heck did Don King get on the list? His hair? I don’t think any rational person thinks of Don King as a “leader” of any sort except perhaps Don King leading Don King (and many not-so-intelligent boxers) to line Don King’s pockets with money.
Fortunately, not many people take Manning seriously. Some even take the time to make light of the clown.
Why anyone would give this clown any credibility by having them on radio or television talk shows is beyond me. Frankly, Manning’s scriptural exegesis is atrocious at best and frankly I’d like to know if even his alledged Master of Divinity Degree from Union Theological Seminary is legit and what specifically his alledged BA Degree from the College of New Rochelle was actually in. It’s not specified anywhere on the Atlah website. Was it in a challenging field such as…Phys. Ed.? I don’t think any intelligent, rational people would be impressed by his self-serving, yet woefully vague bio on the Atlah website. Most recently, Manning called Oprah Winfrey, Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Barack ******* Obama “the Trinity of Hell.” Oprah and Wright, maybe…but Barry? No way! He’s the liberal’s golden child. An angel to save the country. A messiah to bring faith…change…hope…er…well…socialism. To me, James David Manning is about as legitimate as Fred Phelps in regards to being a man of God. Hmmm…steel cage match between Westboro Church and Atlah Ministry? Now there’s a Pay-Per-View!
Maybe it should be the Atlah World Circus ’cause James David Manning is definitely a clown.
[I formally apologize to professional and amateur clowns all over the world for unintentionally besmirshing the time-honored tradition of clowning by equating James David Manning with being a clown.]

What was heavily and in many cases vitriolically criticized regarding Mike Huckabee apparently is acceptable by the usual cast of liberals when Barack ******* Obama does it intentionally. Check out the article over at Big Dogs Weblog and also at Hot Air.

I’ve received several comments on the blog as well as many emails from readers requesting I share the results of my thyroid gland needle biopsy whether they are good or bad.
With great thanks to God, the results were given to me Monday afternoon and the doctor says that it is benign. He also says they cannot be 100% sure it’s completely benign but they are almost 100% sure. He wants to keep an eye on it so I’m scheduled to have ultrasounds done on a regular 4-6 month basis. If it changes in any way he will schedule an operation to remove that portion of my thyroid. However he is optimistic that I won’t have any problems with it in the future but he can’t guarantee it.
I thank all of you for your comments and emails. I appreciate it very much.

Quite clever. Don’t know if it will prove true in November but I can always hope Obama’s chickens come home to roost, so to speak.
