    Broken Computer January 26th, 2007

My stupid personal computer is in the shop. The tech thought that reloading the drivers would solve the problem but after two days he still can’t get the thing working. So I have no clue as to how long it will be before I can get it back in working order. In the meantime, my blogging will be extremely limited.

    Open Trackback Friday

It’s Friday! It’s true! It’s very true! It’s Open Trackback Friday! It is now your opportunity to share interesting entries from your very own blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. I and visitors to this blog like to read interesting stuff on others’ blogs. So link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I have to approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I use myself as the ultimate spam filter. I manually delete all spam before you, the reader, are subjected to it. Just rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get the trackback URL. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

The State Of The Union Speech January 23rd, 2007

It’s only a few minutes away until the State Of The Union Speech. I wonder if some idiot is going to try to disrupt President Bush’s speech.

Sylvia Browne & James Van Praagh — Proven To Be Frauds Once Again January 23rd, 2007

Sylvia Browne & James Van Praagh - Psychics or Con Artists?

With the amazing discovery of Shawn Hornbeck very much alive after several years missing, comes a reminder of how fraudulent self-proclaimed “psychics” truly are. In this case, Sylvia Browne (a favorite guest of Montel Williams) and James Van Praagh (claims to be able to speak to the dead) were on record saying their special “powers” told them Hornbeck was dead. From James Randi’s website:

Back in February, 2003, “psychics” Sylvia Browne and James Van Praagh were consulted by the parents of missing 11-year-old Shawn Hornbeck – Pam and Craig Akers. That young man just recently turned up – very much alive and well, in rather sharp disagreement with the prognostications of the humbug artists. The Hornbecks had talked February 11th with Sylvia Browne on the Montel Williams television show, where she informed them that Shawn was “no longer with us,” which means “dead.” She said his body was in a wooded area “about 20 miles southwest of Richwoods, Missouri.” She said it would be near two large, jagged boulders that “seem out of place in that area,” and she added that the bicycle he was riding when he disappeared, is in a dump “in another state.” As a result of Browne’s fruitless guess, intensive searches by hundreds of volunteers were conducted in the general area described by her, but naturally, with no success. Not even “jagged boulders” showed up, let alone the kid – until he was found and returned home on Friday, January 12th. He’d been gone for 1,559 days!

But there was more specific drivel from Browne, She said that Shawn had been taken by a “dark-skinned man, he wasn’t black – more like Hispanic.” She said the kidnaper had long, black hair worn in dreadlocks and was “really tall.” He was driving an older model blue sedan, she said, a car with fins like in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s Chevrolets. All of this drivel was wrong, from the description of the man – he is not Hispanic nor dark-skinned, he’s Caucasian, he’s heavy and not tall – and his car was quite the opposite of Browne’s invented notions: it was a white pickup truck.

The Akers also appeared in television segments on “Beyond” with James Van Praagh, another equally accurate “psychic.” He led the search in an entirely different direction, suggesting that a person who worked in a railroad car plant was involved, and that the body “might” be concealed in a railway car. Again, totally wrong, in all respects. This fatuous guess-fest also led to numerous detailed searches, including a railroad yard – all a waste of time and money, at the expense of the frantic parents.

This is yet another glaring example of how these leeches eagerly fasten onto grieving and vulnerable persons, exploit them, and profit from their situation. And it won’t stop. Larry King and Montel Williams will continue to give the scam-artists time and publicity – BECAUSE THEY JUST DON’T CARE!

Montel Williams, who regularly allows Browne to appear on his show to perform pretty poorly executed cold reading techniques while claiming them to be psychic abilities, should be ashamed of giving her a regular platform on his show. However he’s chosen to stoop to embracing such scum and villainy and now is too cowardly to come forward (so far) in response to Browne’s 2003 appearance on his show presenting false claims. Both Browne’s and Van Praagh’s records are quite poor. Their predictions have historically been shown to be below statistical chance in regards to probability. They’re both frauds and con artists with absolutely no psychic abilities with egotism and avarice being the main motivations for their activities. There is evil in their hearts.

What Is Up With The Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem Site? January 23rd, 2007

    TTLB The Truth Laid Bear

As the title asks, what is up with the Truth Laid Bear Ecosystem site? My stats, along with all the other blogs’ stats I’ve checked, have not been updated since January 8th, 2007. I’ve left enquiries via their support section, but have not seen any response. If anyone has heard anything, please leave a comment.

It’s Been A Helluva Year, Saints Fans January 21st, 2007

    New Orleans Saints

Congratulations to the Chicago Bears. And congratulations to the New Orleans Saints for a season that no member of the Who Dat Nation will ever forget. No one (and I mean absolutely no one) would have predicted the Saints making it all the way to the NFC Championship game. The 2006 New Orleans Saints really gave a major emotional boost to a city that desperately needed it. It was a helluva run, gentlemen and I believe you will be successful in the 2007 season.

Now with the Chicago Bears winning the NFC Championship, who will I be rooting for in the Super Bowl in Miami? If the Patriots win, I’m rooting for the Bears since I don’t care for New England. If the Colts win, I’m rooting for the Colts so I can at least root for a Manning. Either way, the game will mean less for me since the Saints aren’t going to be in it.

Another season ended (a little later than expected) and another instance of “wait until next season.”

Six Sunnis Burned To Death & Destroyed Mosques — Dubious AP Reports Followed Up By Michelle Malkin January 21st, 2007

Okay, one quick blog entry before the football game. Michelle Malkin came back from Iraq last week and has a followup on her investigation into the AP’s dubious reports of Sunnis being doused with kerosene and burned alive and destroyed mosques complete with a link to her in-depth article in the New York Post. I find it interesting that the arrogance of the AP and its supporters shows when someone comes along, attacked as a “non-journalist” often, and exposes errors and perhaps even fabrications (intentional or not) in their reporting by going directly to the source. With the AP’s recent history of fauxtography (e.g. - faked, altered and misinformed photographs) and shady sources out of Iraq, how can they expect the public to trust them. Combine that with many instances in recent years of journalists from major news sources faking stories, plagarizing materials and other unethical acts, it’s no wonder that an ever growing number of people are getting their news and information from multiple online sources in order to make certain of its accuracy. Face the fact…due to the unethical actions of a few (compared to the vast majority of respectable journalists) bad apples plus the rise of the online information age, the classic form of journalism as we know it to be is dying a slow death.

    Scott Charles “Bam-Bam” Bigelow — R.I.P. January 19th, 2007

    Scott C. 'Bam Bam' Bigelow
    Scott C. “Bam Bam” Bigelow
    September 1, 1961 — January 19, 2007

The world of professional wrestling has lost another star. Scott Charles Bigelow, better known as “Bam Bam” Bigelow passed away earlier today at the age of 45 in his home in Hudson, Florida. The cause of death is not known at this time. Bigelow originally trained to be a pro wrestler at Larry Sharpe’s “Monster Factory” in New Jersey and debuted in Memphis in 1985 as Crusher Yurkov, a Russian heel character. Upon leaving Memphis, Bigelow adopted the name “Bam Bam” Bigelow. His career in the United States lasted until 2004 when he retired. He was a popular wrestler, most often playing the part of the heel often winning his matches with his finishing maneuver known as “Greetings from Asbury Park” which was a flying headbutt originating from the top turnbuckle. He also enjoyed success overseas in Japan in the 1990’s, often teaming with Big Van Vader. Although he never held the world’s title for either of the “big two” (WCW & WWF) he did win the ECW heavyweight title from Shane Douglas in 1997. It was while he was in ECW that he was directly involved in one of the most memorable moments in that company’s history when he hurled Spike Dudley from the ring into the second or third row of the audience. That was one of the moments replayed often during ECW television shows. The St. Petersburg Times newspaper wrote a lengthy piece on him in 2005 which can be found online. He will truly be missed.

    Peyton Manning January 16th, 2007

    Indianapolis Colts logo

Peyton Manning, after living a full life, died.

When he got to heaven, God was showing him around.

They came to a modest little house with a faded Colts flag in the window.

“This house is yours for eternity, Peyton,” said God, “This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here.”

Peyton felt special, indeed, and walked up to his house. On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner. It was a 3-story mansion with a black and gold sidewalk, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Saints logo flag, and in every window, a New Orleans Saints towel.

Peyton looked at God and said “God, I’m not trying to be ungrateful, but I have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I hold many NFL records, and I even went to the Hall of Fame.”

God said “So what’s your point Peyton?”

“Well, why does Drew Brees get a better house than me?”

God chuckled, and said “Peyton, that’s not Drew’s house, it’s mine.”

Bears vs. Seahawks - Sunday, January 14th, 2007 - How Does This Impact The Saints January 14th, 2007

New Orleans Saints At Chicago Bears

In an ironic ending, the Chicago Bears defeated the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 27-24, the same score as the Saints-Eagles games. Both times the birds were defeated. So this means the Saints will have to travel to Chicago next weekend to play the Bears for the NFC Championship in an afternoon game at 2pm EST.

    Saints vs. Eagles - Saturday, January 13th, 2007 - Pre- & Post-Game Reports January 14th, 2007

    Coosh's Bayou Rouge

In a previous post, I mentioned that I was going to definitely watch the Saints play the Eagles and to get some “good mojo” and some good food, my wife and I would be going to a local restaurant owned and run by transplanted Louisianians called Coosh’s Bayou Rouge. I did indeed get some boudin balls and gumbo while my wife got a shrimp po’boy (partially dressed).

Carl & Nancy at Coosh's Bayou Rouge

After we left Coosh’s, we went home and I made my preparations for watching the Saints play. I also made sure to have the VCR going as well at the computer recording the game (for my personal use when football season is over). And how did the game turn out?

Saint's vs. Eagles NFC Playoff Game

The score was identical to the last Saints-Eagles game back in October with the Saints winning. I am overjoyed as are thousands upon thousands of Saints fans. Who they play next week and where will depend upon the outcome of the Bears-Seahawks game Sunday at noon EST. I’m going to root for the Seahawks because I feel the Saints could and should beat them. Plus if I understand it correctly, if the Seahawks win, they would play the Saints in the Superdome in New Orleans but if the Bears win then the Saints would have to play up in Chicago. I want it in the ‘Dome.

    GEAUX SAINTS!

Saints vs. Eagles - Saturday, January 13th, 2007, 8pm EST on Fox! January 12th, 2007

    New Orleans Saints

Saturday evening at 8pm is the time Fox will be airing the New Orleans Saints vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. And I will be planted in my recliner watching. I will wear one of my Saints jersey (haven’t made up my mind whether it will be Bush or Brees) and probably act like a typical wild and wonderful Saints fan (WHO DAT?!?). And to hopefully garner some good mojo for the team, I’m getting a good New Orleans type meal from a local restaurant run by transplanted Louisianians called Coosh’s Bayou Rouge (great gumbo and the best doggoned pecan pie in the Florida panhandle). I’ll probably have some boudin balls and jambalaya or maybe some red beans and rice. I hope to run into some fellow Saints fans while I’m there. I know the owners will be happy to see the Saints represented. Then it will be off to the house where I’ll watch the game. And hopefully the Saints will win. They are playing it in the Superdome in New Orleans and the place is gonna ROCK! I can’t wait! The Saints (10-6) beat the Eagles (11-6) by 27-24 in New Orleans on October 15th and are the second-seeded team in the NFC behind Chicago. The Bears play host to Seattle at 1 pm EST on Sunday in the other NFC game.

    New Orleans Saints

Oh…and if you expect me to offer up any predictions, don’t hold your breath. As witnessed by my woeful prediction of the BCS Championship game, I suck at sports predictions.

Barbara Boxer: Another Example Of Liberal Classlessness January 12th, 2007

    Barbara Boxer

Liberal Democrats claim their party is the part of compassion and tolerance. Well, Barbara Boxer shows once again what a lie that is. She took a cheap shot at Sec. of State Condi Rice at one of the hearings. Pretty pathetic on Boxer’s part and frankly she owes Rice an apology although no one is expecting any from Boxer. After all, since the Dems regained control of Congress, they feel empowered to let their true nature (one of little compassion and tolerance for those who don’t follow their narrow political and social leanings) show through.

Are You Taking Strange And Wacky College Courses? Can’t Beat These! January 11th, 2007

The Young America’s Foundation has compiled their annual list of “America’s most bizarre and politically correct college courses” and it’s pretty shocking. Here’s their “dirty dozen.”

    12. Swarthmore College’s Nonviolent Responses to Terrorism “deconstruct[s] terrorism” and “build[s] on promising nonviolent procedures to combat today’s terrorism.” The “non-violent” struggle Blacks pursued in the 1960s is outlined as a mode for tackling today’s terrorism.

    11. Duke University’s American Dreams/American Realities course seeks to unearth “such myths as ‘rags to riches,’ ‘beacon to the world,’ and the ‘frontier,’ in defining the American character.”

    10. Cornell University’s Cyberfeminism investigates “the emergence of cyberfeminism in theory and art in the context of feminism/post feminism and the accelerated technological developments of the last thirty years of the twentieth century.”

    9. Johns Hopkins University offers Mail Order Brides: Understanding the Philippines in Southeast Asian Context, which is a supposedly deep look into Filipino kinship and gender.

    8. Native American Feminisms at the University of Michigan looks at the development of “Native feminist thought” and its “relationship both to Native land-based struggles and non-Native feminist movements.”

    7. Whiteness: The Other Side of Racism is Mount Holyoke College’s attempt to analyze race. The class seeks to spark thought on: “What is whiteness?” “How is it related to racism?” “What are the legal frameworks of whiteness?” “How is whiteness enacted in everyday practice?” And how does whiteness impact the “lives of whites and people of color?”

    6. Border Crossings, Borderlands: Transnational Feminist Perspectives on Immigration is University of Washington’s way of exploring the immigration debate. The class allegedly unearths what is “highlighted and concealed in contemporary public debates about U.S. immigration” policy.

    5. Occidental College — making the list twice for the second year in a row — offers Blackness, which elaborates on a “new blackness,” “critical blackness,” “post-blackness,” and an “unforgivable blackness,” which all combine to create a “feminist New Black Man.”

    4. Students enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania’s Adultery Novel read a series of 19th and 20th century works about “adultery” and watch “several adultery films.” Students apply “various critical approaches in order to place adultery into its aesthetic, social and cultural context, including: sociological descriptions of modernity, Marxist examinations of family as a social and economic institution” and “feminist work on the construction of gender.”

    3. Amherst College in Massachusetts offers Taking Marx Seriously: “Should Marx be given another chance?” Students in this class are asked to question if Marxism still has “credibility,” while also inquiring if societies can gain new insights by “returning to [Marx's] texts.” Coming to Marx’s rescue, this course also states that Lenin, Stalin, and Pol Pot misapplied the concepts of Marxism.

    2. Queer Musicology at the University of California-Los Angeles explores how “sexual difference and complex gender identities in music and among musicians have incited productive consternation” during the 1990s. Music under consideration includes works by Schubert and Holly Near, Britten and Cole Porter, and Pussy Tourette.

And the number one most bizarre and politically correct college course in America as determined by Young America’s Foundation is:

    1. Occidental College’s The Phallus covers a broad study on the relation “between the phallus and the penis, the meaning of the phallus, phallologocentrism, the lesbian phallus, the Jewish phallus, the Latino phallus, and the relation of the phallus and fetishism.”

It seems to me like all of these are courses created out of thin air with little to no backing fact checking by tenured professors in order to avoid having to actually teach legitimate and substantive information to students. A waste of tuition.

Young America’s Foundation Spokesman Jason Mattera remarks, “The Dirty Dozen demonstrates that professors still have an obsession with dividing people on the basis of their skin color, sexuality, and gender. They also can’t seem to shake off a strong admiration for Karl Marx and his murderous ideology — apparently the 100-plus million totalitarian regimes have murdered over the years is not enough?!”

Other courses that could have easily made the list (”Dishonorable Mentions“) include UC-Berkeley’s Sex Change City: Theorizing History in Genderqueer San Francisco; Cornell University’s Sex, Rugs, Salt, & Coal; Hollins University’s Drag: Theories of Transgenderism and Performance; and Hollins University’s Lesbian Pulp Fiction.

According to Christian Post Reporter Lillian Kwon the conservative foundation further cited recent studies that found only one in four Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment while more than half can name at least two family members of “The Simpsons.” Also, only 31 percent of college grads could read and comprehend complex books and 40 percent of college students need remedial work in math and English.

In an op-ed piece published in the L.A. Times, author Charlotte Allen wrote, in part:

The problem that the Young America’s Foundation list, first issued in 1995, highlights isn’t simply the hollowing-out of the traditional humanities and social sciences disciplines at colleges and their replacement by crude indoctrination sessions in whatever is ideologically fashionable — although that’s a serious issue. At Occidental, for instance, it seems nearly impossible to study any field, save for the hard sciences, that doesn’t include “race, class and gender” among its topics. Even the Shakespeare course at Occidental this semester focuses on “cultural anxieties over authority, race, colonialism and religion” during the age of the Bard.

The bigger problem is that too much of American higher education has lost any notion of what its students ought to know about the ideas and people and movements that created the civilization in which they live: Who Plato was or what happened at Appomattox.

Instead of the carefully crafted core programs that once guided students through the basics of literature, philosophy, history and the social sciences, most colleges now offer smorgasbords of unrelated classes for their students to sample in order to fulfill requirements. And the professors stock the smorgasbords with whatever the theorists they idolize tells them is the new new thing.

And our University system is laughed at by the rest of the world? Gee, I wonder why?

Boudreaux And The Devil January 9th, 2007

    Boudreaux's Country Store

Boudreaux died and was on his way down to Hell. In anticipation, the Devil turned up the thermostat to make it extra warm for Boudreaux. When Boudreaux arrived, the Devil asked, “Hey Boudreaux, how do you like the heat down here?”

Boudreaux says, “Mais, it’s jes’ fine. It reminds me of Bayou PonPon in July.”

That made the Devil mad. That night, he turned the thermostat up all the way it could go. Man it was hot! When Boudreaux woke up, the Devil asked him, “NOW how do you like it down here?”

Boudreaux says, “Mais, it’s fine. It reminds me of August on Bayou Lafourche.”

As you might expect, that made the Devil all the more mad. Well, that night, he turned the thermostat down all the way it could go! The whole place frosted over. Icicles started forming from the rafters. When Boudreaux woke up, the Devil asked him, “How you like it NOW, Boudreaux?”

Boudreaux, shivering, through blue lips, says, “Mais cher, I’m one happy Cajun!”

The Devil was infuriated! He yelled, “What do you mean you’re one happy Cajun?!!”

Boudreaux, still shivering says, “The Saints done won the Superbowl!”

A big ol’ Cajun howdy to all readers from Outside The Beltway, Stuck On Stupid, Conservative Cat, Pirate’s Cove, Bullwinkle Blog, Perri Nelson’s Website, Basil’s Blog.
