Gustav is moving quickly at approximately 17 miles per hour which has moved the timeframe of landfall sometime Monday during the day. Some predictions have it making landfall somewhere around Cameron, Louisiana to New Iberia, Louisiana with the possibility of a slight wobble toward the east. Detailed contraflow maps are available online courtesy of the Louisiana State Police.
Updated information in the New Orleans area can be found via WWL radio, WWL-TV, WDSU, WVUE, WGNO, the Times-Picayune newspaper. Links to other Louisiana television stations can be found here. Also updates and information on the Mississippi Gulf Coast region can be found via WLOX and the Biloxi Sun Herald. Precautions are being taken in south Mississippi as well.

Hurricane Gustav has cleared Cuba and is headed towards Louisiana at a pretty good clip. The main questions now are exactly where will it make landfall in Louisiana and how strong will it be when it does land? The timeline expected is shown on the graphic above. Evacuations are now all mandatory and are all well underway. Links for information can be found in earlier blog entries concerning Hurricane Gustav.

Bummer! My beloved Bulldogs fall short in their season opener against Louisiana Tech by a score of 22-14. But when you turn over the ball 5 times in a game and allow your opponent to get points after some of those turnovers, it’s hard to beat anyone. Louisiana Tech played very well coached by Derek Dooley, Louisiana Tech’s new head coach and incidentally son of coaching legend Vince Dooley. MSU only managed to score one touchdown in each of the first two quarters and were held scoreless for the entire second half. MSU’s next game will be in Starkville on September 6th against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.

This storm just went from extremely bad to extremely frightening all within a handful of hours. It is now expected to get to a Category 5 level while in the open Gulf of Mexico. Evacuations are well underway in most Parishes in south Louisiana especially those in southeastern and south central Louisiana (links included: Jefferson Parish, St. Tammany Parish, St. Bernard Parish, St. Charles Parish, Plaquemines Parish, etc.). Also contraflow on the main roadways has begun to expediate evacuation as much as possible. An interactive map of New Orleans contraflow routes can be viewed here. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin who doesn’t have a good history of handling hurricanes has announced that mandatory evacuations may begin by 7pm CDT Saturday.
Updated information in the New Orleans area can be found via WWL radio, WWL-TV, WDSU, WVUE, WGNO, the Times-Picayune newspaper. Links to other Louisiana television stations can be found here. For the “right now” data on Hurricane Gustav off the coast of Cuba, NOAA has a buoy down there near the pass between Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula. Click here to watch the winds, air pressure and temperature there. Also click here for an updated overall view of meteoroligical information via numerous buoys on Gustav courtesy of NOAA.
I’d also like to point out that on Nola.com there are live streaming webcams of various portions of New Orleans that will be left on during the hurricane just as they were during Katrina. These were initially created mainly for coverage of Carnival in New Orleans as well as parts of JazzFest but are viewable throughout the year. They will be left on unless and/or until they get knocked offline by the storm. Please pray for all those affected and potentially affect by the storm. I found out recently that these live cams were taken off Nola.com but were placed on another site. However when checking out the other site, the cams are not live streams but updated still frames which is not worth linking. Sorry.

I, as well as hundreds of other bloggers, used the Truth Laid Bear as a fun and light-hearted way of having our blogs “ranked” in terms of incoming links and activities. For a while, it worked fairly well. However in recent months it obviously has fallen in a state of disrepair and it appears for all intents and purposes to have been effectively abandoned. I even wrote about it earlier this year. If someone or some group is indeed behind the scenes attempting to fix it, then they are doing a great job of hiding the effort. For example, the following notice is still on the site:
Update 3/1/08: The Ecosystem is undergoing a major expansion, with many new blogs being added to the system. That means rankings may bounce around a bit — but the new rankings will be an even more accurate representation of blogs’ popularity in the blogosphere as a whole. Put on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride! — N.Z.
With numerous support tickets remaining unanswered, the “ubercarnival” page still with a “could not open data” error message on it, and so many other bugs and fubars showing up on the site, I contend that the TTLB is effectively dead and gone. Just no one bothered to bury it by taking it offline. And it seems that no one cares anymore. Just recently…actually 3 days ago…my blog suddenly went from a “Large Mammal” classification to a “Crunchy Crustacean” classification. For a long time this blog was ranked in the 500 range then several months ago it drop to about 1050 (I forget the exact number) where it help exactly in the same ranking for months. That also indicated to me the site was dead. Now three days ago this blog plummets to 236172?!? I don’t think so. Out of curiosity, I want to see what the top ranked blogs currently were. In the past they included Michelle Malkin, Daily Kos and other mega-blogs. Now absolutely NONE of them are even in the top 100. Another sign that The Truth Laid Bear has been completely abandoned by the side of the information superhighway. Just look at what IS currently (as of this writing) listed as the top 100 blogs:
The fact is most of them are phony sites or sites that have been removed (mostly by “Blogger”). Note all the “403 forbidden”’s listed in the top 100. More evidence of the demise of TTLB.
Face it folks, it’s over and done with The Truth Laid Bear. And I see absolutely NO evidence of it ever coming back. It’s too bad no one was able or willing to take it over. Founder Rob Neppell’s Kithbridge company and writing for The Victory Caucus site seem to be the focus of his attention (although the latest “news” on the Kithbridge site is dated March 20, 2008 which ironically was only 20 days after the initial notice of “major expansion” (see above) appeared on TTLB so I wonder if Kithbridge is still up and running. Whatever the case may be, I think it’s quite obvious that TTLB is gone never to return so whenever I finally get around to it, I’m going to remove TTLB stuff from my sidebar.
UPDATE: Either someone read this entry and word got back to TTLB or my timing was extraordinarily coincidental, but it seems someone or some group behind the scenes culled out all the phony blogs and actually got the charts working again. However the ubercarnival database still cannot be opened. And compared to two other tracking services, TTLB still has my average daily visits at 54 which is exactly where they had me the last time the charts would show up many months ago (and keep in mind, TTLB had my site flatlined at 54 for several months before that so I think that part of TTLB is still not working properly). In contrast, Sitemeter recorded 336 visits just for Monday alone and shows over the past 30 days visits of over 100 each day. Apparently whatever TTLB is using to track visits on my site is either high inaccurate or broken. So it would seem some things are being addressed while others are either not being addressed or they haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Gustav was upgraded to hurricane status and is expected to grow in strength to major storm status (category 3 or higher). Louisiana is on alert and many parishes including those devastated by Hurricane Katrina (Jefferson Parish, St. Tammany Parish, St. Bernard Parish, St. Charles Parish, Plaquemines Parish, etc.) are under voluntary to mandatory evacuations. Many of those voluntary evacuations are scheduled to become mandatory later on Saturday. Updated information in the New Orleans area can be found via WWL radio, WWL-TV, WDSU, WVUE, WGNO, the Time-Picayune newspaper. Links to other Louisiana television stations can be found here. Emergency information in Louisiana may be found at Emergency.Louisiana.gov as well. Hundreds of buses are being brought to staging areas in an around New Orleans to evacuate people and many emergency shelters that used to prohibit pets are now allowing pets. These are only two of many changes made in response to what happened in Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath. Many in the New Orleans area, especially those near various levees are severely worried about how well the levees, especially those repaired by the Army Corp of Engineers, will hold if Gustav hits. Furthermore, this is compounded by the fact that promised improvements to existing levees are woefully behind schedule. U.S. officials warned that gaps remain in New Orleans’ flood control system despite improvements after Katrina. Unlike his predecessor, Kathleen Blanco, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is taking a much more proactive stance concerning the hurricane threat. All the major computer models at this time are forecasting landfall somewhere along the Louisiana Gulf Coastal region. Exactly at what point in south Louisiana is where they vary. Hurricane expert Mark Schleifstein writes, “Hurricane Gustav is expected to dramatically intensify as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico over the next three days, and now will arrive at the central Louisiana coast with strong Category 3 winds after briefly reaching Category 4 strength.”

Up front I admit that I am a fan of Michelle Malkin. I read her blog regularly and have it in my bloglists. I find her to be intelligent, coherent, logical, and thoughtful. This video shows failing liberal talk show host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones actually not only verbally assaulting Malkin but physically assaulting someone standing next to her. Michelle gives her account of the incident on her blog. He suddenly abandons his failed attempt to protest the Denver mint (actually some goof in a strange costume supposedly trying to levitate the building — probably just street theatre) and starts verbally assaulting Malkin and slanders her many times. The real nasty stuff starts at about the 2:38 mark. Incidentally Jones is allegedly syndicated in a mere 60 stations (mostly small market, low wattage stations) nationwide (well, if the station list is accurate, a small portion of the nation can listen to him via the public airwaves — probably in single digits). From what I can determine, those stations, for the most part are on the bottom of ratings according to Arbitron plus like so many kooks, he’s bought shortwave radio time to spread his nonsense worldwide. For example, according to Arbitron, WTIX, which carries his show in New Orleans, doesn’t have enough to even get ON the list meaning it has extremely few listeners. And New Orleans is one of the bigger markets in which his show allegedly airs. The term “moonbat” tends to be thrown around at liberals a bit too often and I reserve it for truly unhinged liberals such as Alex Jones. But no doubt about it, this Alex Jones is completely irrational, unhinged, deranged and so far from reality as to be in his own little conspiracy-laced fantasy world. I would be willing to believe more people listen to him more out of a car wreck appeal — in other words, just to see how crazy he gets on-air). Too bad the Denver Police didn’t do their jobs and arrest the guy after the physical assault he commits as seen on the video.
A big tip o’ the cap to Rosemary’s News & Ideas for the heads up.

Brent Bozell has written an excellent column showing the complete over-the-top nonsense perpetrated by celebrities supporting Barack ******* Obama. In part, it reads:
That overbaked tart Madonna kicked off her latest concert tour with a fairly typical attempt to put her Kung Fu grip on media attention by signaling her preferences in the presidential race. In her first concert in London – the same city where the Dixie Chicks professed their shame for being geographically associated with Bush – Madonna performed a song titled “Give It 2 Me” with a video screen flashing images behind her.
First came John McCain’s picture – alongside images of Adolf Hitler, Zimbabwe’s dictator Robert Mugabe, environmental ruin, and starving children. (She also included Mike Huckabee in that odd hall of shame.) Then came the Obama segment, and the Democrat was surrounded by images of Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, John Lennon, and Al Gore.
So what was the political message in the song accompanying those visuals? It featured hackneyed Madonna lyrics: “If it’s against the law, arrest me. If you can handle it, undress me.” By now, as she turns 50, the lyrics are beginning to sound desperate.

Gustav is chugging along, heading for the Gulf of Mexico where it is expected to gain strength and possible reach category three level. However computer models have moved it further westward which is good for my inlaws in Mississippi but still bad for family and friends in Louisiana. Maybe it’ll go to Texas.

Tropical storm Gustav is headed for the Gulf of Mexico and the latest tracking forecast has it headed towards the Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama Gulf Coast region. These are very early predictions and various computer models are varying widely on where it may make landfall. As with Tropical Storm Fay, when it’s that far away, it’s almost impossible to predict, with any bit of accuracy, where it will go. Reports from New Orleans say evacuations there may take place as early as Friday. Reports from the Mississippi Gulf Coast say residents and tourists need to be on the alert. We shall see what occurs.

The DNC Convention is in full swing in Denver and frankly I couldn’t care less. It’s all for show and has no substance. Nothing significant will happen and the mainstream media will fawn all over Obama as usual. However liberal extremists who definitely qualify as moonbats are protesting. I refuse to post pictures of those idiots (plenty of those at Pajamas Media and Looking At The Left), however I’d much prefer to post three specific pictures of counter protesters who obvious are far more intelligent and have much more common sense than the flaky, granola-brained moonbats that were protesting.

On my way to work Monday, I stopped at Lake Ella to take pictures of its flooding. Many long time residents say it’s the worst they’ve ever seen it. Even worse than when Hurricane Kate (1985), the last major hurricane to hit this area.
Many years ago a cottage style motel was built along Monroe Street (U.S. Highway 27) and now the remaining cottages house small, locally-owned businesses collectively called the Cottages at Lake Ella. After Tropical Storm Fay dumped over 15 inches of rain in the area, Lake Ella’s waters overflowed its banks and flooded many of the businesses causing heavy damage. Sad to say that several of the businesses did not have flood insurance so their future looks bleak. According to Tallahassee’s Water Resources and Engineering department, Lake Ella is a closed basin and the only way water will recede is through a 10-inch pipe in the lake or through seepage into the ground.
The “road closed” sign actually isn’t directly related to the flooding but to keep people from driving from the parking lot to the closed roadway next to the sidewalk that went around the perimeter of the lake.
One of the many park benches that normally were high-and-dry on the banks of the lake. In the background you can see the gazebo that was also flooded. There was no way I could walk closer to take photos due to the water levels.
This streets runs along the south side of the lake and was closed to traffic.
You can see how the water has risen well over the banks and into the street. The large oak tree in the background normally has several feet of open space underneath and sits several yards from the banks of the lake when waters are at normal levels.
This is a closer view of the large oak tree.
This is one of the businesses at the Cottages at Lake Ella. It’s called Sweet Stuffin’s. You can see the floodwaters.
According to published reports, Kathy Brower, owner of Sweet Stuffin’s, said she’s been in that location for 22 years and never had any problems with flooding.
More businesses flooded at Lake Ella.
And more flooded businesses.
That is Joe’s Bicycle Shop.
While I was taking pictures, the owners and employees of Joe’s Bicycle Shop were taking out merchandise by boat.
And carrying smaller items out.
Some of the businesses along Lake Ella are in small houses, like this one. However they were not spared from the ravages of the flooding.
If I have the opportunity, I plan on leaving extra early tomorrow to go vote in the primaries. The place where I cast my vote is near the Ochlocknee River which is WAY over its banks. I took pictures from a boat landing on the Ochlocknee River over two years ago showing flooding after a lengthy period of spring storms. I checked how it looked Sunday and the water’s much higher than it was in the spring of 2005. I’ll try to take some pictures Tuesday and post them later on. I’m also going to try to take some pictures from near the U.S. Highway 27 bridge of the Ochlocknee River.

Nice satire well illustrating the absurdity of the idea that restricting or even eliminating the right to bear arms will reduce crime.
