Yep. Bill Mauldin presented the modern Cavalry’s method of dispatching the iron and steel Cavalry steed to the great beyond in a humorous manner back in World War II. The guys in the top photo just updated it to helicopters.

Over the weekend, my wife and I traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi to visit my inlaws. My father-in-law is in the hospital and my mother-in-law had been asking for us to come over to visit. So last Thursday we made the long drive over. On our way to their house, we drove by a donut shop called The Fractured Prune. The name definitely made an impression because we made it a point to take a photograph on the way back home. This is the story they provide on how they got their unusual name.
Back in 1976 when Tom Parshall purchased Josh’s 46th Street Market, he was thinking about a new name for his enterprise. Several friends gave him suggestions, but he felt they all lacked imagination & individuality. He had been reading through the abstract of the land he purchased, and an unusual name caught his eye. Back in the late 1800’s a woman named Prunella Shriek had owned much of the land in that area. Tom didn’t think too much about it until one day he was browsing through the Baltimore Library and came across a book titled “Ocean City Love”. As he looked through it, he was thrilled to see Prunella Shriek’s name with a paragraph devoted to her.
Even though she was in her seventies, she was the only woman who competed with men in traditionally men’s sports such as ice skating races & skiing competitions. She was an excellent tennis player, and was county ping-pong champion circa 1895. Being older and somewhat brittle, she often returned from some of the more vigorous competitions in a wheel chair or on crutches. Thus the townspeople began lovingly to refer to her as “Fractured Prunella.” When Tom read this, a voice in his head said, “Hello”, he would name his enterprise after this wonderful & spunky old lady, and call it “The Fractured Prune® “.
It is a chain of donut shops now and according to The Fractured Prune’s online list of stores, there’s one coming to Florida, but Orlando is too far away to drive for donuts.

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Wooden” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week’s PhotoHunt is number 98 in the series and it inspired me to post some photographs from a trip I took last summer along U.S. Highway 98 in the Florida panhandle to Apalachicola. I really like Apalachicola. It’s not a typical Florida tourist trap like Panama City Beach. It’s more laid back and very friendly. In fact, if I ever win the lottery, I’m buying a second home there. Lots of interesting shops, great restaurants, and one of the nicest beaches at nearby St. George Island.
However I am rambling. Sorry.
In keeping with the theme at hand, I’ve got three unique wood carvings that I photographed while I was there.
Located on a town park along Water Street across from the Grady Market is this hand-carved wooden statue of a fisherman in his yellow slicker holding a rather large redfish. This statue is located on the right side of the small park. Those are real, not wooden, shrimpboats in the background.
This is a nice closer view of the fisherman carving. Incidentally, the body of water you see in the background is the Apalachicola River very near its mouth where it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. As you can imagine, sport fishing is quite popular there all through the year.
On the left side of this park on Water Street is a wooden carving of a mother manatee with her baby and an admiring dolphin. There’s a lot going on with this carving so here’s another view…
Please pardon the shadows, but it’s the best picture I took from this angle. However you can make out the baby manatee a bit better as well as the admiring dolphin. The pink thing is supposed to be coral but it looks more like a mutant dish sponge.
As I mentioned before, Apalachicola has many unique and quaint shops, one of which is the Old Time Soda Fountain which, as the name implies, has an old-fashioned soda counter where you can get delicious ice cream floats which really come in handy on a hut, humid Florida summer day. They also have a plethora of seashells that you can purchase to take home. However it’s not wooden, it’s brick. But this is wooden…
This handcarved whimsical wizard stands vigil in front of The Old Time Soda Fountain shop. I asked about it while I was there, but unfortunately I no longer remember the specifics. I do believe I remember being told it was carved by a regional artist who’s done other carvings for Apalachicola businesses and residents. I also seem to remember being told that the carvings at the Water Street park were by a different artist. Anyway, the wizard is owned by the folks who own the soda fountain and they told me then that they roll it inside when they close to keep it secure.

I’m tired of the cold-weather/warm (and usually wet) weather that’s ongoing in this part of Florida. Normally I don’t interject personal comments in the Godly Wisdom posts I periodically place on the blog, but this particular instance is close to my heart.
When I was a teenager in rural Mississippi, I was a shy kid who wasn’t popular with the teenaged girls. In fact I had only one date while living there and that was a “mercy date” by a friend who felt sorry for me.
I was lonely and miserable. I had no social life and was pretty much a misfit (I was a jock AND a nerd at the same time — go figure). I prayed each night while in bed and every time I prayed, part of the prayer was asking God to find someone special that He would bring into my life.
I prayed that prayer for several years and my faith in God kept me asking Him each time I prayed. I prayed it through high school and into college. And eventually, in 1984 while attending Mississippi State University I met and fell in love with a woman who, as I found out later, had been praying a similar prayer asking God to bring someone special in her life. We were engaged in 1985 and were married on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1986. And we’ve been happily married ever since and both of us credit God for bringing us together all those years ago.

If you haven’t heard by now, Cuban government officials announced that Fidel Castro has resigned as El Presidente of Cuba and his brother, Bubba…er…Raul will take over the leadership officially.
Now how long will it be until they “officially announce” Fidel’s death? I have a sneaky suspicion that he’s been dead for some time now so if he resigned recently it must have been the zombie Fidel Castro.

The above photo was run by the Times-Picayune newspaper in the New Orleans area and shows a photo op with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Police Superintendent Warren Riley where more than $1 million in new armament and other equipment, largely for use by the SWAT squad in emergency and riot situations, including a fully equipped mobile command post, two armored cars and modern assault rifles were displayed for the press. The photo caused an uproar and caused criticism by the public since it showed Nagin pointing a weapon at Riley. Anyone who has had any weapons training (either formal or informal) knows to NEVER point a weapon at anyone unless you plan on shooting them. In protest, the Mayor’s office issued a press released criticizing the Times-Picayune and for a short time it was published on NOLA.com which is where the Times-Picayune has it’s online publications. I knew I should have copied the text because I correctly predicted that it would be taken down since the Times-Picayune has a long history of caving to political bullying which is exactly what Nagin did and exactly what the T-P did in response. The picture is also accompanied by a video which shows Nagin moving the weapon about which he not only pointed at Riley but reporters as well. However, the T-P issued the following explanation why they took the Mayor’s press release, the picture itself, public comments and also the T-P’s initial reasoning why they chose to show the picture:
A photo in some Metro sections Wednesday showed a laughing Mayor Ray Nagin pointing an M-4 rifle at Police Superintendent Warren Riley at a news conference to announce new crimefighting equipment purchased by the New Orleans Police Department.
A review of a video taken at the event shows that the camera captured a split second as the gun was being lowered that made it appear to be deliberately pointed at the chief. However, the mayor clearly did not deliberately point the gun at Riley.
The photo prompted two letters and a razz on the editorial page criticizing the mayor, which appeared in some Thursday editions.
After a review of the video Wednesday night, the razz and the letters were removed from Thursday’s later editions. Had editors seen the video earlier, the letters and the razz would not have been published.
The newspaper regrets the error and apologizes to the mayor.
Well I saw the video via WDSU website and although WDSU and Nagin’s office are trying to spin it, even the video shows Nagin being completely irresponsible in his unsafe handling of a weapon but waving it around the way he did. Sure it’s only a couple of seconds, but if the weapon was loaded and went off, the muzzle velocity of the bullets is measured in milliseconds and would have a high probability of hitting someone. In short, WDSU’s report, Nagin’s press release and the T-P’s apology is a load of crap. There was no error on T-P’s part, only cowardice in not standing by their original, and proper, stance.
The complete video of the photo-op shows Nagin moving the weapon in a clear unsafe manner. In doing so he pointed the weapon at Chief Riley as well as members of the press and others present. Although Nagin did not intend to do so, he inadvertently presented a bad example for weapons safety and rather than apologize for his error, would rather blame the newspaper for publishing a photo showing Nagin’s stupidity. Nagin has only himself to blame yet in typical Nagin fashion is trying to blame other. Congratulations, New Orleans, this is the maroon you elected not once but TWICE as your mayor. You wanted idiocy and incompetency, you got it in abundance.

Reading some online reports about upcoming movies, I found an article from USA Today (a bastion of indepth reporting) about the upcoming Wolverine movie. Written by Scott Bowles and published online on February 14th, 2008. The first line reads thusly:
As if a guy with temper issues, iron blades for fingernails and a penchant for cage fighting needed it, Wolverine is about to get even surlier.
I know this is somewhat nitpicky but Bowles should have at least done some elementary RESEARCH into the Wolverine character for he has two GLARING errors in one line. First, Wolverine does NOT have “iron blades for fingernails“. He has adamantium claws that protrude through the skin on the back of his hands when he wills them painfully forward. Second, the character does NOT have “a penchant for cage fighting“. The cage fighting took place in one, count ‘em, ONE scene in the movie. Bowles probably just looked at the trailer for the first X-Man movie and made assumptions. Boy, this shows just how poor the average journalist on a national publication is nowadays. This should have been a slam-dunk, easy-as-pie, report but Bowles mucks it up in the FIRST LINE OF THE REPORT! Pathetic. [If one wishes to be nitpicky, one could argue that Bowles actually got THREE things wrong when he wrote "iron blades for fingernails" because 1) they're made of adamantium not iron, 2) they are edged extendable claws not blades and 3) they're not part of his fingernails. But that's just if one wishes to be nitpicky.]

Two years ago, the Mohammed cartoon conflagration consumed the world and the blogosphere helped lead the way in fighting back. Longtime readers will remember that this site hammered the issue in support of Denmark. “Sammenhold,” you may recall, is the Danish word for solidarity. With the arrests this week of five jihadists accused of plotting to murder one of the Danish cartoonists, it’s time to demonstrate sammenhold again.
I’m am joining numerous bloggers in showing my support for freedom of speech and expression and showing my disgust at radical islamists (islamofascists).

My Younger Brother And Myself Circa 1969
Yep, that’s me on the left and my little bother on the right. It was taken in the spring of 1969 by my paternal Grandmother. Since so many people are referencing the song “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” (originally recorded by The Hollies in, can ya believe it, 1969) I decided to include it here.
That was just for fun. Here’s my PhotoHunt entry for the category this week of Heavy.
In Crawfordville, Florida there used to be a bookstore called Tattered Pages but in the summer of 2007 it was announced that the owner was retiring and since she was unable to find someone to take over the store, she had no choice but to close it. As a mascot, the store had this lifesize concrete lion that they would paint different colors periodically. For example, during Easter, it was painted in various pastel colors like dyed Easter eggs. During Mardi Gras, it was painted purple, green & gold. Not only was it painted as you see here, friends and regular customers also signed the lion and left messages of encouragement and support. Here are just two of many written on the concrete lion.

The workweek has finally almost come to a close. At least it’s MY workweek that’s ending and the weekend about to begin. I used to have a job that required me working weekends so I sympathize with everyone who’s got to work on Saturdays and/or Sundays. With that said, it’s Open Trackback Friday once again! It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To all in Mobile, Alabama (where Carnival and Mardi Gras actually originated in the United States), New Orleans, Louisiana, Gulfport & Biloxi, Mississippi as well as all the places along the Gulf Coast who also celebrate: have a happy and safe Mardi Gras. Incidentally for those who do not know, “mardi gras” translates into English as “fat Tuesday” so wishing someone a “happy Mardi Gras day” is basically saying “happy fat Tuesday day.” A bit redundant grammatically, but perfectly acceptable otherwise.
