    Open Trackback Friday

Mardi Gras (”Fat Tuesday”) was last Tuesday and of course Ash Wednesday followed. And Sunday will be the first day of March. Hopefully the flowers will begin to bloom and the cold nights will be over for the season. However it is now Open Trackback Friday! It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

District Of Columbia Gets A Senator? February 26th, 2009

Residents of the District of Columbia may be receiving a full voting member in Congress under a bill passed today by the Senate. However, it may be shown that Congress does not have the constitutional right to pass such a bill and the Constitution does not allow for representation from anything other than States. This is spelled out in regards to Senators in the 17th amendment which reads in part:

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.[Emphasis mine]

All references to electing Senate and House of Representatives members specifies “States” of which DC is not therefore it would require a constitutional amendment to allow DC full representation in Congress. The Constitution allows representation specifically for states only, not cities or districts. The District of Columbia is directly affected by Amendment 23; Presidential Vote for District of Columbia. However it does not allow for full representation for DC nor does the Constitution allow for amendment by legislation which is effectively what Congress is trying to do. If a similar bill is passed by the House of Representatives, the differences worked out and signed by President Obama (which he promised to do), it would set up legal challenges that would go to the Supreme Court and unless they woefully misinterpret what is currently in the Constitution, the law would ultimately be ruled unConstitutional in my humble opinion.

Where Are They Now? — The Class of ‘81 (Wayne Academy) February 24th, 2009

school deskThere is a television show currently airing on TVLand called High School Reunion Class of ‘88. I’ve only caught bits and pieces of the show itself but have seen plenty of advertising for the show to realize I’m really not at all interested in it. Frankly, I’m not much for any of the “reality shows” which, due to all the editing, are far from reality. However, the premise of the show did get me thinking about the people who graduated from high school with me back in 1981. To begin, let me tell you a little about my educational background (also known in Miss’sippi as “book learnin’“).

I attended a very small private school in Waynesboro, Mississippi called Wayne Academy. At the time there were approximately 250 students from kindergarten to 12th grade. My senior class only had 14 people in it. Yes, it was THAT small. Pretty soon after leaving for college I lost touch with all of my classmates. My parents would learn of some news concerning few of them from time to time but from a personal standpoint, I heard from very few of them directly and only sporadically. Most of them moved away from Waynesboro which isn’t surprising considering how tiny of a town it was in 1981 and how little opportunity to make a decent living existed there. I, as well as most of my classmates determined the best choice was to leave Waynesboro. Pretty soon, I didn’t hear from any of them nor heard any news about them. I was never the popular kid in school and very few of those going to Wayne Academy were what I could consider friends. However I wonder about them from time to time. Sometimes I will do a Google name search to see if I can get any clue as to their current whereabouts. Most of the time nothing comes up. I wonder if any of them ever did a Google search for my name. And if they did, did they happen to view my website or this blog. Most likely I will never know but frankly I am not that hard to find. They could very easily leave a comment letting me know they are alive and well or just to tell me off. Who knows? My senior year in high school was not pleasant and I imagine I ticked off a lot of folks because I got fed up with everything. I didn’t realize at the time that I was actually suffering from depression. It explains a lot concerning my emotional state at the time.

There’s a song in my collection by Joe Walsh called “Class of ‘65” (from Walsh’s 1983 album “You Bought It You Name It”) which I listen to from time to time. It’s sort of a wistful and somewhat bittersweet yet strangely nolstagic look at class reunions. In recent years when I hear the song I would think about the “Class of ‘81″ from Wayne Academy. The song would cause me to wonder if anyone tried to organize a class reunion. With only 14 people in my graduating class it wouldn’t be a large affair. It might be more apt if an overall school reunion of alumni from all years were organized. I don’t know if anyone ever did or even tried. I don’t remember ever being contacted by any alumni committee or any related group. What would attending such a reunion be like? How would my classmates relate to me now? How have we changed? Do they ever even think of me? Those are the sort of questions everyone seems to have when contemplating about class reunions and what one’s former classmates are doing now. I’m a bit sad to admit it but it would be doubtful if I would attend a class reunion even if invited. Nothing against my old classmates. I’m grown way beyond that now and I imagine they have too. It’s a little more than 2 years to the 30th anniversary of graduating from Wayne Academy. Hard to believe it’s been that long.

But it’d be nice if they would leave a comment to let me know how they are.

IT’S FAT TUESDAY 2009! (For Those Unfamiliar: “Fat Tuesday” = “Mardi Gras”) February 24th, 2009

    Mardi Gras
    Laisse Le Bon Temps Rouler!

To all in Mobile, Alabama (where Carnival and Mardi Gras actually originated in the United States), New Orleans, Louisiana, Gulfport & Biloxi, Mississippi as well as all the places along the Gulf Coast who also celebrate: have a happy and safe Mardi Gras. Incidentally for those who do not know, “mardi gras” translates into English as “fat Tuesday” so wishing someone a “happy Mardi Gras day” is basically saying “happy fat Tuesday day.” A bit redundant grammatically, but perfectly acceptable otherwise.

    Miracle On Ice -- USA Defeats Russia 4-3 -- February 22, 1980

…that the United States hockey team defeated the mighty Russian hockey team by a score of 4-3 sending them to the gold medal game against Finland two days later. Team USA defeated Finland for the gold by a score of 4-3. Al Michaels who are announcing the game from Lake Placid, NY on TV shouted those words, “Do you believe in miracles?!? — YES!!!” which have become iconic in of themselves in U.S. sports history and has consistently been mentioned in various top 10 sports moments. This game received the monicker “the miracle on ice.” I remember watching that game from my rural Mississippi home, probably the first hockey game I ever watched on TV. I remember it being very exciting and it goes without saying that it was memorable as well.

29 years ago today. My how times flies.

New Ad Regarding The Stimulus Package (a.k.a. — “Porkulus”) That Was Just Passed February 21st, 2009

Sometimes Roadsigns Are A Little Harder To Obey February 21st, 2009

    Stimulus Bill (a.k.a. — “Porkulus”) February 20th, 2009

Uncle Sam Money BagsFrom my personal experience and from every anecdotal evidence I have heard and read, no one has ever spent themselves into prosperity. So why do Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the other liberal Dem congresscritters think the federal goverment can spend the country into prosperity? If anyone spent like the government plans on spending per this stimulus bill (incidentally none of those who voted for it actually READ it) they would be in debt for life. So why should we expect any different result if the government does it? It didn’t work under FDR and it won’t work under BHO. This cockamamie scheme just goes against standard common sense. Furthermore, Obama stated clearly that the stimulus bill doesn’t have any earmarks but that turned out to be a lie because it’s LOADED with earmarks hence the nickname “PORKULUS.” The other major problem I have with it is that it was unecessarily hurried through with no committee hearings, no debate, no discussion and most importantly no careful scrutiny of its contents. I seem to recall advice being pounded into America’s conscience that one should ALWAYS read any contract carefully BEFORE signing any legal document. Although it’s arguable whether congress is populated with intelligent people, one would THINK that congresscritters would want to at least read through such a major bill affecting the country which has the potential of doing irreparable harm to the country. Well, the libs in congress who are all in the back pocket of the Pelosi/Obama machine all just took Obama’s word for it (remember folks, Obama assured us there were no earmarks {e.g. — pork} in this bill — but there’s a lot) and passed it because Obama frightened the libs and much of the gullible in the country into believing it was imperitive to pass it immediately without finding out what was in it and what it would do to the country. How freakin’ irresponsible! I see more long-term harm coming from this than help.

    Open Trackback Friday

After a cold front moved through the area on Thursday causing major thunderstorms and even tornados, it’s getting colder. Again. Not as bad as a cold snap we had earlier this year but the local meteorologists are predicting temperatures dropping to the mid-20’s Saturday morning. I guess I’m covering the outside plants one more time. But today marks another Open Trackback Friday once again. Saints Release Deuce McAllister February 19th, 2009

    Deuce McAllister

It wasn’t unexpected but the New Orleans Saints released running back Deuce McAllister on Tuesday. His release puts the Saints under the $123 million salary cap. Saints fans are disappointed and saddened by the news since McAllister was a fan favorite. However McAllister remains upbeat. “I still have the itch to play,” he said. McAllister had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee six weeks ago and he expected to be ready by next season. He also believes he can play another three years or so. So it will be interesting to see if any team in the NFL will take a chance on him. On a personal note, I will still wear my Deuce McAllister jersey when the season starts in the fall.

    Ephesians 4:29 and Blogging February 18th, 2009

    Big Mouth

To be honest, I never considered Ephesians 4:29 in relation to blogging until I was visiting Between Two Worlds and read a recent entry from Justin Taylor where he references the topic via a heads-up to an article written by Bill Mounce on the blog koinonia. Since Ephesians 4:29 is being referenced, here it is:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. [NIV]

I’m the first to admit that I’ve been guilty of this from time to time but this timely reminder is certainly welcomed and I invite you to visit koinonia to read the whole article from Bill Mounce.

    HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY February 14th, 2009

    Valentine's Day Dog

I just wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and romantic Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately for the wife and me, we’ve both come down with colds and it’s rainy, wet and nasty out so it pretty much kills any notion of a romantic weekend. Bummer.

    Open Trackback Friday

Well, it seems like I’m coming down with a cold so don’t expect anything profound from me. It is Friday the 13th which is normally a “lucky” day for me. I even have a hockey jersey with the number 13 on it (see below). I guess I am the opposite of a triskadecaphobic. Well, I guess I was a little more profound than I originally thought. So rather than ramble on about the number 13, let me just say that it is Open Trackback Friday once again.
