See, I Told You So! (Terrell Owens Disrupts Cowboys) December 14th, 2008

    Terrell Owens

Well, I called it when Terrell Owens first became a Cowboy back in the spring of 2006:

Terrell Owens is now a Dallas Cowboy. Let’s see how long it takes before the blowhard ticks off teammates and management much less the fan. Actually he’s already got a headstart with the fans.

He’s doing just as I predicted. Face it, as talented as Owens is, he’s still just a prima donna punk when he doesn’t get his way. Owens and tight end Jason Witten got into a heated exchange in the Cowboys’ locker room and would have come to blows if they weren’t separated. This is in addition to recent disruptions and whinings from Owens. The Cowboys have zero chance of making it to the Super Bowl especially if Owens plays his little “me, me, me…it’s all about me” games of which he’s infamous wherever he played.

Mississippi State University To Name New Head Football Coach Thursday Morning December 10th, 2008

    Mississippi State Bulldogs

In probably the worst-kept secret in college athletics, University of Florida’s current offensive coordinator Dan Mullen arrived on Mississippi State University’s campus and will be named the Bulldog’s head football coach in a press conference Thursday morning. It’s not just a rumor any longer and is being reported by several dozen media outlets. Mullen has served under current Gators head coach Urban Meyer for the past eight seasons, following Meyer from Bowling Green to Utah and then to Florida. He has spent the past four seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Florida and served as quarterbacks coach while at Bowling Green and Utah as well. His background is as a strong recruiter and a well-established offensive background as seen at UF. I am now somewhat, yet cautiously, optimistic that Mullen may bring the Bulldogs into an era of respectability at the very least. At this point with so many wait-till-next-years under my belt I’m leaving it at that.

College Football — MSU Bulldogs, FSU Seminoles & NO Saints December 1st, 2008

Mississippi State Bulldogs Florida State Seminoles New Orleans Saints

Well, this weekend was a major bummer for me in regards to football both college and pro. All three football teams of which I am a fan (Mississippi State Bulldogs, Florida State Seminoles, & New Orleans Saints) all lost this weekend. Of the three, the Saints came closest to winning but came up just a tad short.

I had hoped the Saints would play well against the Buccaneers, but considering all the injuries plaguing the team and other issues, they just didn’t play as well as they could have and as such came up on the losing end Sunday afternoon. And to make matters worse for me personally, I hear that due to salary cap issues and the sad fact that he’s lost a step or two, Deuce McAllister’s career as a Saint may be coming to a close at the end of the season. Keeping in mind that I’m a Mississippi State alumn, McAllister is one of the few Ole Miss grads I was ever willing and able to support. Okay, that’s being a bit tongue-in-cheek. McAllister’s abilities were wonderful when he was younger and before the knee injuries he sustained. I even purchased a McAllister jersey. However it is undeniable that McAllister has lost a lot of his speed and quickness and he seems to be more hesitant at hitting holes he used to burst through prior to his injuries. It’s sad but that’s the way the NFL is and he is indeed released or traded at the end of the seaon, he will be greatly missed. With the Saints facing major salary cap issues at the end of the season, they are going to have to unload some high-salary players and several reports indicate Deuce is near or at the top of the short list. Oh well.

New Orleans Saints team owner Tom Benson

And speaking of the Saints, I’ve been critical of owner Tom Benson for a long time now and honestly feel that in order for the Saints to take it to the next level and be a consistent playoff team the first and most important change to be made is change in ownership. I feel Benson is bad for the team and it really showed after Hurricane Katrina when he kept indicating his desire to move the team. What a way to kill morale. And apparently he’s not well liked by players and staff. For example, Benson routinely brings automobiles from the many dealerships he owns to the Saints’ practice facility, and then he attempts to sell those vehicles to his players. According to various reports and substantiated by the N.O. Times-Picayune, many players don’t appreciate nor like Benson’s activities in this regard. So prior to last Monday night’s home win over the Packers, someone or some group, most likely a player or players, smeared human excrement all over the vehicles Benson brought to the Superdome that evening. The players don’t respect Benson. The staff doesn’t respect Benson. Even a lot of New Orleanians don’t respect Benson. Most don’t like Benson either. So when things deteriorate so badly that your own players spread excrement all over your own property it’s time to get the message and pass the team over to someone new. Not family, not friends, not business associates, but someone fresh and new. Benson, like Al Davis, keeps poking his nose in football business where it doesn’t belong. The major difference is that Davis actually knows somewhat the inner workings of a football team (albeit his notions are outdated) while Benson does not. Bottom line: As long as Tom Benson owns the New Orleans Saints, they will remain a second-tier team and never will join the elites.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Florida State Seminoles

In regards to college football, both the MSU Bulldogs and the FSU Seminoles were defeated by their in-state rivals. Florida State lost to the Florida Gators by a score of 45-15 and Mississippi State lost to Ole Miss 45-0.

Florida State showed flashes of brilliance against Urban Myers’ Gator team especially on the defensive front but could not play well enough consistently to even give the Gators a decent game. The Gators pretty much dominated the game and took advantage of FSU’s weaknesses especially at QB and the defensive secondary. For some reason, FSU’s quarterbacks have not developed to their potential in the past several years and as such is one of the major weak spots FSU has. It certainly showed Saturday afternoon in the rainy game. I hope that will turn around soon.

Now the Egg Bowl game between MSU & Ole Miss was just plain embarrassing for MSU fans everywhere. Ole Miss dominated at every position throughout the entire game and absolutely crushed the Dawgs. MSU’s offense had -51 yards rushing (26 rushing attempts for a -2 yard average) and only 88 yards passing (10 completions in 30 attempts for a 2.9 yard average). That’s only 37 total yards! That’s utterly pathetic and even though MSU suffered with numerous key injuries and players removed from the team for various violations this shows the coaching staff’s lack of ability to effectively prepare and motivate the team. And it showed. The Bulldogs, soon after being scored upon several times in the first quarter, pretty much gave up. The hustle and intensity usually associated with the Egg Bowl disappeared from the Bulldog players and they played like they just wanted to go home. Nothing Sylvester Croom nor his coaching staff did during halftime motivated them to play with any intensity in the second half. This issue lies directly on the coach’s shoulders. After the game, head coach Sylvester Croom met with MSU athletic director Greg Byrne and after refusing to agree to coachings changes, Croom tendered his resignation which was accepted by Byrne.

Former Mississippi State football head coach Sylvester Croom

Frankly, I can’t say I’m at all surprised and I won’t miss Croom much at all. He’s never had much success as head coach at MSU and I believe the 2007 season’s success was largely due to a lot of luck because they won several games they would otherwise had lost not due to outstanding play, but due to their opposition playing so poorly. Admittedly, Croom inherited a team with a lot of outstanding problems, the biggest of which was the NCAA sanctions placed on the team due to several infractions under previous head coach Jackie Sherrill. Croom could only manage 3 wins during his first two seasons at MSU. According to published reports, Croom was having some success off the field drawing commitments from several top recruits, including a quarterback. However the status of those recuits will be in question and many of them may go elsewhere.

Former Mississippi State football head coach Sylvester Croom

Now it is up to first-year A.D. Greg Byrne to do whatever needs to be done to replace Croom with a better coach. Running backs coach Rockey Felker, who was once head coach at Mississippi State (not very good himself), will run the team while the Bulldogs search for Croom’s replacement. Already reports list possible replacements as former Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables, East Carolina coach Skip Holtz and TCU coach Gary Patterson [Dec. 12, 2008 UPDATE: Add Louisiana Tech's Derek Dooley and Boise State's Chris Peterson to the list of possibilities in various published reports. MSU athletics has retained the consulting firm Neinas Sports Services to advise on the search for Croom's replacement, which could take several weeks.]. All of these names are merely speculative at this point however of those four, I think Venables and Holtz might have the best shot of improving the team with Patterson next in line. Bowden, on the other hand, wouldn’t do any worse than Croom but I don’t think he would be successful in the SEC at MSU but I could be wrong. Any of the four would be an improvement over Croom and would probably improve upon this season’s abysmal 4-8 record. As a major Bulldog fan, I definitely will be keeping a close watch on further developments and hope Byrne and the athletic department at MSU will begin the coaching search as soon as possible. And I will definitely be hoping for a surprisingly successful coach.

Bummer! Martin Grammatica may not be in a Saints uniform next year if he can’t kick better than he has lately. He may not be on the roster before the year is out. Reggie Bush looked particularly good against the Vikings with flashes of brilliance. If he could just be consistent. However penalties and some really stupid mistakes and questionable play calling late in the game truly cost the Saints. The pass interference which lead to the Vikings’ go-ahead field goal late in the 4th quarter was particularly frustrating.

Florida State Loses As Well… September 20th, 2008

    Florida State Seminoles

*SIGH* Deja vu. First I witness Mississippi State stinking up the place and this evening I witness Florida State stink up the place as well. Three words: turnovers and penalties. That’s what really killed any chances of FSU winning the game. 7 turnovers and 12 penalties for 139 years. Good grief. They handed Wake Forest the game on a silver platter and gave them opportunity after opportunity to make this game a blowout but Wake Forest’s offense couldn’t capitalize. However they still managed to win 12 to 3: all scored on field goals. First Mississippi State loses and now Florida State loses. I’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if the New Orleans Saints can beat the Denver Broncos in Denver to salvage my sports weekend.

Mississippi State Loses Again September 20th, 2008

    Mississippi State Bulldogs

*SIGH* I am sorely disappointed in how the Mississippi State Bulldogs looked today against Georgia Tech. Frankly, the Dawgs looked pathetic on the field. Although they managed to move the ball between the 20s, once they got into the red zone they were stymied. That combined with 3 turnovers killed any legitimate chances MSU had to make this game competitive. The final score was 38-7 and MSU was lucky to get the sole touchdown.

Maybe Florida State will do well against Wake Forest tonight.

And Now…A Baseball Score At A Football Game September 14th, 2008

    Mississippi State Bulldogs

The bad news: Mississippi State lost to No. 9 Auburn by a score of 3-2. Yes, you read that correctly…3 to 2. The only scoring was when Auburn kicked a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter and when an Auburn offensive lineman was flagged for holding in the end zone thereby giving Mississippi State a two-point safety with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter.

So what’s the good news in all of this? The Bulldogs managed to hang with the ninth ranked team in the country. Actually it’s not that much of good news because Auburn committed three turnovers, missed two field goals, and handed the Bulldogs their only points with the fourth-quarter safety. In short, Auburn almost handed MSU the ballgame on a silver platter but the Bulldogs royally sucked. Check out these miserable stats: 30 rushing plays for a paltry 38 yards total; 10 receptions for only 78 yards. That’s only 116 total offensive yards gained. In short, the Dawgs were absolutely horrid on the field. Coach Croom had better get the team play better or else MSU might go winless in the SEC this year.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs Defeats Mississippi State Bulldogs 22-14 August 30th, 2008

    Mississippi State University Bulldogs

Bummer! My beloved Bulldogs fall short in their season opener against Louisiana Tech by a score of 22-14. But when you turn over the ball 5 times in a game and allow your opponent to get points after some of those turnovers, it’s hard to beat anyone. Louisiana Tech played very well coached by Derek Dooley, Louisiana Tech’s new head coach and incidentally son of coaching legend Vince Dooley. MSU only managed to score one touchdown in each of the first two quarters and were held scoreless for the entire second half. MSU’s next game will be in Starkville on September 6th against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.

Lamenting The Pensacola Ice Pilots: Now Defunct June 29th, 2008

    Pensacola Ice Pilots

Back in the mid-90s, I became a hockey fan thanks to my co-worker and friend Jonathan Dennis who introduced me to the sport when Tallahassee had an ECHL franchise, the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks. Since I grew up in Mississippi where hockey was a foreign concept only mentioned briefly on the news to announce who won the Stanley Cup or, at every four years, the Olympics, I grew surprisingly a big fan of the sport and still enjoy it today. For many years, until the team folded operations here in Tallahassee and moved to Macon, Georgia (renamed the Macon Whoopee — cute, huh?) I supported the team as much as my limited income would allow. I attended games, bought souvenirs, joined the booster club (the “Fin-natics”) and even won some game-worn jersey auctions at the end of several seasons (my favorites are the two home jerseys I won of the Tiger Sharks most famous enforcers, the Killer B’s — Louis Bedard & John Badduke — complete with rips, repairs, board burns, etc.). I still have those jerserys to this day and when the weather gets cold enough in the winter (about 4 weeks worth around here) I’ll wear them in public. Sometimes when I do wear them I’ll occassionally receive a comment from a fellow fan lamenting the loss of the Tiger Sharks back in 2001. After the Tiger Sharks moved to Macon for one season only to finally disappear altogether, the only chance I had to go to a pro-hockey game was when my wife and I traveled to Gulfport to visit her parents. We’d attend a Mississippi Seawolves game, sometimes wearing one of my old Tiger Sharks jerseys which would always get people to come up to me and strike up conversations. Great ice breaker (no pun intended). I still hold out hope that one day Tallahassee will once again be home to an ice hockey team via a smaller regional league, but pessimistically, I’m not holding my breath.

Periodically I will check up on ECHL news and the teams in the region (e.g. — the Ice Pilots and the Seawolves — Mobile, Alabama hosted the Mobile Mysticks until 2002 when they moved to Georgia and became the Gwinnett Gladiators). Today I learned that the Pensacola Ice Pilots announced earlier in June that the franchise told the league it wouldn’t field a team in the 2008-09 season or thereafter. This announcement force the ECHL to officially withdraw the Ice Pilot’s membership in the league. Although placing dead last in the league, fans were still loyal to the team and expressed overwhelming anger at the owner of the team Mario Forgione, who lives in Ontario, Canada as well as franchise President Greg Schuh. One major criticism of Forgione was that he was an “absentee owner” hardly ever staying in the Pensacola area and lived in Ontario, Canada. One angry fan wrote, “Mario Forgione and Greg Schuh are at the heart of our problem! These two men are dishonest crooks. They have lied to the fans, the players, Coach Marks, local county officials and ECHL officials.” Another fan wrote, “The ECHL, Coach Marks, competitors and fans were blind-sided by the decision, but Greg Schuh doesn’t seem suprised [sic].” All the reports I have read from Pensacola indicate the overwhelming anger and disappointment of the Ice Pilots faithful. The Pensacola News Journal put it this way:

What certainly did not work here is absentee ownership. Majority owner Mario Forgione was an Ontario-based businessman. That’s where he chose to live, and that’s perfectly understandable.

But in this market, like so many other places with minor-league sports franchises, you need the boss in town. You need the owner pressing the flesh, meeting with business owners, meeting with city officials, marketing the team, pushing the product.

The owner has to connect with the people.

    That did not happen here.

Both Forgione and Schuh claim they will be looking into joining a smaller league and resume play as soon as possible however it seems no one believes them. This leave the Florida Everblades, located in Estero, Florida (southeast of Cape Coral) as the only remaining ECHL team remaining in the state. Florida hockey is now limited to only Tampa, Miami and Estero with no teams remaining in north Florida where once there were ECHL teams in Jacksonville, Tallahassee and Pensacola making for interesting rivalries along Interstate 10 (along with Mobile, Pensacola, Biloxi and New Orleans). With this departure from the league, I am now worried about the Mississippi Sea Wolves who only recently resumed play after Hurricane Katrina heavily damaged their home rink, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum. The Gwinnett Gladiators, just outside of Atlanta, are now the closest Sea Wolves’ opponent. They are approximately six hours away. The Everblades are farther away in southeast Florida. This is going to put a greater financial burden on the Sea Wolves and I am concerned that they, too, may have to suspend operations in the near future.

Trying to put a silver lining on a very dark cloud for me, I hope this may eventually pave the way for a smaller, southeastern-based league to form and create new, locally-owned franchises in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola and Mobile as well as other locations. I have heard and read various plans similarly, but thus far nothing has come to fruition.

So I bid a fond farewell to the Pensacola Ice Pilots and to all the fans over there, I truly empathize with you all.

Congratulations Boston Celtics! June 18th, 2008

Congratulations To The Boston Celtics -- 2008 NBA Champions

Late Tuesday evening, the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA Championship with a stunning 131-92 blowout over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 6. Being a Celtics fan it makes me happy that the Celtics are back in championship form after a 22 year dry spell but it’s even sweeter that they defeated the Lakers. Not just defeated, but demolished. Congratulations Celtics!

    PhotoHunt 106: Thirteen (13) April 20th, 2008

    PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Thirteen (13)” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. Well, the number thirteen is what I consider my lucky number. I’m not superstitious. When Tallahassee had a minor league hockey team (Tallahassee Tigersharks) I usually wore hockey jerseys which I collected. My normal source for custom jerseys back then was a place called River City Sports and I bought many jerseys from them many years ago. I still have them all. BUT…whereas back then when I was morbidly obese, they fit me snugly but now they fit like a tent (see post immediately prior to this one for weight loss update). Also, one of my favorite sports movies is “Slap Shot” so I purchased some Charlestown Chiefs jerseys from River City Sports and had them customized them with with my last name on the back. I got one for myself and one for my wife.

What number did I pick for myself?

The number 13, of course! And my wife’s jersey is number 14.
