Star Trekkin’ Across The Universe… August 31st, 2006

Star Trek The Original Series - Uniform Insignias

Purists are going to hate this. Newbies are going to love this. At least that’s my prediction. It’s been announced that utilizing current Hollywood special effects, CBS Paramount Domestic Television will be re-releasing all the original Star Trek episodes with brand-new state-of-the-art cgi effects added to take place of the old cheap special effects utilized in the 60’s due to low budgets. Some of what will be altered via cgi to enhance the look include:
Outer views of the starship Enterprise, Romulan Pirds of Prey, Klingon Battle Cruisers & Warships and other space vehicles.
Images as seen on the bridge’s viewscreen.
Matte paintings used for background and wide exterior shots.
    Phaser blasts and explosions.

Apparently the release order of the remastered shows won’t correspond with the original series’ airdate order. It’s going to be interesting to see how the finished product will appear. And how fans will react to it.

    U.S.S. Enterprise: 1701-D

Incidentally, the title of this entry is actually a line from the song “Star Trekkin’” by The Firm which I first heard on the Dr. Demento Show on radio many, many years ago.

    More Fauxtography (This Time In A Lighter…And Thinner…Vein) August 29th, 2006

In light of media pictures being exposed by astute bloggers as photoshopped frauds comes this recent example of CBS’s foray into the fauxtography faux pas involving their soon-to-be anchor, Katie Couric.

UPDATE: Riehl World View has “discovered” another fauxtograph. This time of Dan Rather.

Will SNL Or MAD-TV Use This? August 29th, 2006

Hurricane Katrina: One Year Ago Today August 29th, 2006

Radar Image Of Hurricane Katrina: August, 2005
Radar Image Of Hurricane Katrina: August, 2005

One year ago today, Hurricane Katrina came ashore along the Louisiana-Mississippi Gulf Coast region and caused more devastation in that area than any previous hurricane in modern history. My wife and I have almost 100 relatives, friends and acquaintances who lived in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Fortunately all made it through alive although several were injured and all of them had property damage of varying degrees. Thousands were not as fortunate.

Today, there will be many televised reports and specials about the hurricane and we will be reminded over and over what happened. We will relive the tragic events once again and tears will be shed. Hundreds of thousands of people are still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina and things won’t be back to normal for years to come. Whatever “normal” will be. So I urge you to keep all those affected by Hurricane Katrina in your prayers and thoughts not only throughout this day but also in the future as well.

A reminder: In the left column there are several links to websites devoted to hurricane relief. They still need financial assistance so I urge you to consider linking over to them and see if you can help.

Satellite Image Of Hurricane Katrina: August, 2005

UPDATE: Two blog entries elsewhere are to be noted here. First, Paul at Wizbang! has a lengthy article examining the levee breaches and why there may be more to the story than we have been told. It’s an interesting piece and has been garnering a lot of attention. The second blog article is by Bryan at Hot Air and is a clear reminder of how local, regional and state officials dropped the ball big time before, during and after Hurricane Katrina. I urge you to read both of them.

Thanks and a bit tip o’ the cap to Sister Toldjah for the headsup!

    FOOTBALL! (And I Don’t Mean That @&#*$% Soccer Garbage) August 28th, 2006

New Orleans Saints Mississippi State Bulldogs Florida State Seminoles - Football

As the song goes, “Are ya ready fer some football?!?” I sure as heck am. Preseason NFL games just whetted my appetite. The bulk of the good stuff is just about to kick off. For me, it’s the sure sign of autumn.

Starting with my alma mater, Mississippi State. They actually have the earliest regular season game of my three main teams with a Thursday (August 31st) evening game against South Carolina and will be aired on ESPN. The Steve Spurrier coached Gamecocks will probably be heavily favored but USC will be on the road playing in Starkville and anything can happen there. Especially when a bunch of Dawg fans sneak those cowbells in and raise some serious noise. Then Monday, Florida State heads down to Miami to play the U. of Miami Hurricanes. The Noles will try to continue to beat on the ‘Canes even though they’ll be on the road. I think FSU might be favored in this one, but the rivalry will make this one a toss-up. This one’s also televised by ESPN. Finally, the Saints won’t start their regular season opener until September 10th when they’ll be on the road in Cleveland to face the Browns in a day game. They’ll be on the road for their first two games and will finally return for their first home game September 25th which will hopefully be in the Superdome.

Football is cranking up and I am solidly stoked!

Ray Nagin On 60 Minutes August 27th, 2006

    New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin

I watched 60 Minutes earlier this evening with the Dishonorable Mayor Ray Nagin. I can’t witness this man speak anymore without him royally ticking me off. His offhand, defensive comment about the World Trade Center was bad enough but the spew from his mouth merely confirmed to me that Nagin is a lying sack of sh….

    You get the picture.

I’m sure there will be a lot of other political blogs that will pick apart much of what he said and claimed and there will also be the pro-Nagin blogs that will fawn all over the man thereby stroking his ego, but while it’s still somewhat fresh in my mind, I’d like to point out one major deception…misdirection…flim flam…whatever you wanna call it.

When asked about a plan to evacuate New Orleanians if another hurricane struck, Nagin stated that all methods would be used to evacuate the citizenry. He specifically mentioned trains and planes.

    Problem.

Unless someone has some inside info I’m not privy to, Nagin nor anyone else in his government has contracted with any airline or train service for such an evacuation. As far as I can find out, no one has even started negotiations for any such contract. So unless Nagin plans on somehow magically pulling those signed contracts out of his butt…er…hat, then he’s making a claim about something that does not exist.

    Way t’go Ray.

In short, Ray has a plan to make a plan that he’s planning to get around to planning.

New Orleans, you re-elected him…you’re stuck with him. Pray no hurricanes hit your fair city while Nagin remains in office because if one does, you’re all screwed.

The softball interview, conducted by Byron Pitts (Pitts was really kissing Nagin’s butt), was full of misstatements and ridiculous commentary. Some examples include, but are not limited to, Pitts intro’ing the piece stating that Katrina was a “direct hit” on New Orleans (not true), Nagin knocking on the new levee like someone was going to answer the door (we now know it won’t come crumbling down if someone taps on it), a nice segment showing black-&-white pictures of debutantes with hooded figures standing behind them (betcha a lot of folks watching that mistakenly now think the Klan attended the debutante balls for white girls in New Orleans instead of masked Carnival riders), etc.

I expected this to be a puff piece from Byron Pitts and 60 Minutes, but the nonsense that was presented by CBS in that piece was inexcusable.

However the understated moment of the whole segment was Leonard N. Moore being called a “critic” of Nagin’s and then the title of his upcoming book being revealed as “An Oreo In Chocolate City.” Man, that ain’t critical, that’s brutal!

So far, much of what I have read from other bloggers about the 60 Minutes puff piece is equally as outraged as I. I’m curious to see how those who have not weighed in as of yet will respond.

Hurricane Ernesto 5 Day Tracking August 27 2006

Still watching where Hurricane Ernesto will go once it gets into the Gulf of Mexico. Some tracking forecasts have Ernesto aiming for the Florida Panhandle as a Category 3 hurricane which has the possibility of putting where I live to the eastern side of the storm which is the worst portion of a hurricane. The tracking forecast available on NOAA’s website currently has it going further eastward making landfall around the Tampa-St. Petersburg area which if happens would give us locally some rain.

There’s still plenty of variables that may change the course of Ernest as well as hindering its strengthening. The next 48 hours will give meteorologists more data to make better predictions. In the meantime, I’ll wait and see.

I could use a few more D-cell batteries come to think of it.

Just a little headsup info: there’s a weather-related blog by Florida State University Meteorology student Charles Fenwick called Eye Of The Storm that would make a good resource for addition information on Ernesto.

An Oldie But A Goodie About What The Media Missed After Hurricane Katrina August 26th, 2006

Rooftop Rescue By Helicopter After Hurricane Katrina

I urge you to go read Lou Dolinar’s article on Real Clear Politics concerning what the media missed in its coverage of Hurricane Katrina (some of which they’re still missing as we close in on the one-year anniversary).

Can Ya Help A Poor Ol’ Blogger Out? August 26th, 2006

    traffic

Dear readers, can ya help this ol’ blogger out by spreading the word about the existance of “The World According To Carl” blog? I know I’m never going to be world-reknown but I’d settle for an increase in traffic just for the old ego-boost. If you wouldn’t mind, please add my blog to blogrolls you know about or even add it to your own blog list. Maybe recommend to others to come on over and set a spell? I would really appreciate any help you might have to offer.

Welcome to my blog, Wizbang! and Stop The ACLU readers.

    Global Warming? August 26th, 2006

    glacier

Okay, once again the so-called “expert scientists” are confusing an issue. No, no, no…not that Pluto’s no longer a planet…this time it’s once again about global warming. In a new study they have found that due to global warming, glaciers are growing.

    Wha…..lemme read that again…

    Growing?

You mean to say that an increase of heat is making the ice GROW?

If I remember my elementary class in science, when you apply heat to ice it turns to water. Right?

But apparently when you apply heat to the planet, it makes MORE ice?

This just goes to show that the so called “expert scientists” still can’t get their story consistent.

These so-called “expert scientists” have studied this for years. What have they concluded so far? More hurricanes? Global warming’s the cause. Less hurricanes? Global warming’s the cause. More rain? Global warming. Less rain? Global warming. More ozone? Global warming. Less ozone? Global warming. Male pattern baldness? Global warming.

How many of you out there who are as old as me or older remember back in the 70’s when these so-called “expert scientists” were warning all of us about “global COOLING“?

It’s no wonder why I and millions of others are having problems buying into this “global warming” stuff when even the so-called “expert scientists” can’t even agree.

    Watching Ernesto August 25th, 2006

    Forecasts For Tropical Storm Ernesto

I know, I know it’s way too early, but many of my relatives, inlaws and friends along the Gulf Coast are keeping a watchful eye on where Ernesto goes and if the storm increases or decreases in strength. Stay tuned, folks. The next 72 hours will give us more accurate information according to the meteorologists.

“Lucha Loco” By Malcom Venville August 25th, 2006

    Raziel - Luchadore
Raziel - One Of The Luchadores Featured In The New Book “Lucha Loco” By Malcom Venville

Photographer Malcom Venville offers an interesting glimpse into the world of lucha libre in his book of photographs entitled “Lucha Loco.” You can visit his site to find out more about the book and some of the luchadores featured. It’s sad that the main exposure in the United States to lucha libre was Jack Black’s miserable comedy (if you can call it that) “Nacho Libre.” I’ve watched luchadores in action both with American companies like ECW, WCW and WWF/WWE but to get the full flavor you really need to see the televised shows from CMLL and AAA from Mexico. Unfortunately our local cable only shows Univision which doesn’t have any lucha libre action but one of the local Mexican restaurants shows Galavision via satellite and I’ve caught some of the CMLL shows in the past. It’s outstanding stuff even though the only Spanish I know comes from my days as a rugrat watching Sesame Street.

Anyway this seems to be a book I might try to find sometime.

Bloggers To Honor 9/11 Victims Online (A Sweet Sidenote) August 25th, 2006

In an earlier post I brought up the special project of bloggers honoring the victims of 9/11. As I mentioned before there are more details about this project here. I visited the site today and read a specific entry concerning a couple of very special participants in this project named Ben and Noah. The organizer of the project says he has checked this out and they are legit. Ben and Noah have their own website as well and as cynical as I am about things, especially concerning internet hoaxes, I sincerely hope this is indeed legit. For if it is true then what Ben and Noah have done is a wonderful thing and very touching. They should be highly commended for their 9/11 tribute.

Welcome to my blog, Wizbang! readers.

JonBenet Ramsey - Is It Finally Over Yet? August 23rd, 2006

    JonBenet Ramsey
    JonBenet Ramsey

Frankly, I grew tired of the JonBenet Ramsey stuff long, long ago. However, one thing related to it sticks in my craw a bit. And it’s about all those pageants all across the country with little girls wearing outfits and makeup far too adult for their age. All with their parents’ (most of the time, the mother’s) consent and encouragement (sometimes even whether the kid likes it or not).

Someone I can’t remember coined a term to describe these exploited, heavily madeup girls…

    PROSTITOTS

Pretty apt term if you ask me.
