Florida A&M Rattlers vs. Tennessee State Tigers September 30th, 2007

    Florida A&M Rattlers

Wow! FAMU beat TSU in the Atlanta Football Classic by the skin of their teeth…er…fangs as Tennessee State kicker Eric Benson lined up for the go-ahead 27-yard field goal with eight seconds left.

    He missed. Wide left.

Rattlers win 18-17. It was the fifth straight year the game has been decided in the fourth quarter and the sixth straight time FAMU has beaten TSU. Tennessee State leads the series 25-22, but FAMU is now 11-3 against the Tigers in the Atlanta Football Classic. Definitely a game for the strong of heart. FAMU hits the road next week to face the Winston-Salem Rams.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Alabama Crimson Tide September 30th, 2007

    Florida State Seminoles

I was mistaken in my previous FSU entry thinking they were to play Bama in “the Doak” here in Tallahassee but instead they played east of here in Jacksonville (about a 3-hour drive on I-10). But good news all around — the game was televised on CBS and the Noles won 21-14. They actually are improving and replacing Drew Weatherford with Xavier “X-Man” Lee worked well. Now FSU will be back in ACC play when they take on NC State in Doak Campbell Stadium here in Tallahassee next week.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. South Carolina Gamecocks September 29th, 2007

    Mississippi State Bulldogs

Although the Bulldogs lost the game 38-21, they didn’t look too bad. The Dawgs’ QB getting injured will be something to follow to see how it affects the team. They will play U. of Alabama-Birmingham next Saturday at home.

    Open Trackback Friday

It’s Friday. Finally! The weekend is almost upon us. I can’t write anything very clever this week. Oh well. However, be that as it may it’s still Open Trackback Friday! This is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

Memories Resurrected By A Song September 28th, 2007

Blue Oyster Cult -- Agents Of Fortune

I have been a music addict for as long as I can remember. The first vinyl lp that I ever got was “Snoopy’s Christmas.” The first album my Mom surprised me with was an album by Mason Proffit called “Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream” (which incidentally is now available on CD — it’s a good album worth checking out). I remember my dad buying me a box of assorted cut-out 45’s (lots of Stax and Atlantic) from the local Rexall drug store that had a copy of “Son Of A Preacher Man” (neither the Dusty Springfield nor Aretha Franklin versions but a version by a male R&B group similar to the O’Jays or the Spinners — I can’t remember who but none of the usual sources I check on matters like this list a group that rings a bell). I remember winning my first concert tickets from WHBQ in Memphis, Tennessee for an upcoming Lynyrd Skynyrd concert which my Dad took me to (that is a story in of itself that I will try to remember to tell in a future blog entry).

I have read about people having memories set in their minds based upon a song they were listening to at the time or a song associated with an event. For some unknown reason, I don’t have that memory association.

    Except for one song.

“Don’t Fear The Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult.

I know it’s not one you’d think of in terms of memory association. It’s not like it was the song playing while I had my first kiss or something like that. It actually is more of a bittersweet occurance.

When I was a kid, my maternal grandparents lived in Memphis, TN and I truly loved going there to visit them from our home in Cleveland, Mississippi. We’d go there fairly often since it was only about a 2 hour drive up U.S. Highway 61 (the famed blues highway). It had malls, an amusement park, the only batting cages I’ve ever used as a kid, some cool museums and a lot of other things I found personally interesting growing up (NOT Elvis…I never cared for that – but that’s another story altogether).

In the summer of 1976 we moved to the small town of Waynesboro, Mississippi which caused our Memphis trips to be scaled back to maybe twice a year. That two-hour drive grew to over 8 hours which was hard for two kids. Only a few years later, my Grandparents decided to retire and move to Florida. So just before they moved, we had one final visit to Memphis.

Now whenever we were in Memphis, I usually listened to either WHBQ or WMPS on AM radio because they both were rock stations in the 1970’s. When we were leaving Memphis Sunday night on that final visit, I asked my parents to play WMPS since it came in better at night than WHBQ. We were in a station wagon and they set it up where the radio was playing in the far rear speakers only where I could listen to the station while riding in the “far back seat” (as we called it). As we were driving southbound on Interstate 55, I kept listening as long as I could through the static and hiss and the final song playing when we finally lost the signal was “Don’t Fear The Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult. And that song was forever etched in my memory that whenever I hear it I still can feel the sadness of leaving Memphis for that last time knowing I would never be back there as a kid to visit my Grandparents. I eventually did go back to Memphis once when I was in college but it wasn’t the same.

New Orleans Saints vs. Tennessee Titans September 25th, 2007

    New Orleans Saints

Saints lose 31-14. This was embarrassing for Saints fans. No offensive line. Bad defense overall. The question now is: will the Saints win ONE game this season. If they play like they have in their first three games, there’s a good chance they’ll go winless in ‘07. I’m bummed out and going to bed.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs September 23rd, 2007

    Mississippi State Bulldogs

Okay, so it was not unexpected that the Bulldogs would beat tiny Gardner-Webb by a score of 31-15. This gives them their first three-game winning streak since 2000. That’s pretty sad when you think about it. The last time MSU started 3-1, it ended its season winning the Independence Bowl. However next week they face ranked South Carolina coached by Steve Spurrier. Will the Bulldogs have enough in them for a second upset in a season? We’ll see.

One nice thing is that Comcast Sports South, a channel carried on the local cable system played the abbreviated tape-delay broadcast of the game. And it made me homesick for the cowbells in Starkville. Sometime soon, I’ll put a blog entry about my MSU cowbell collection.

Wil Wheaton Writes About RIAA & Their Attack Dog SoundExchange September 22nd, 2007

    Wil Wheaton
    Wil Wheaton

The more I learn about the RIAA and their heavy-handed tactics, the more I despise the organization. Now they are going after online music broadcasters via their own attack dog known as SoundExchange. Wil Wheaton (actor, author, voiceover artist, etc.) wrote an article (with many relevent links) recently about SoundExchange issuing a press release that 24 webcasters accepted their forced offer. The current situation of intimidation, high fees and threatened lawsuits have silenced dozens of online music stations unjustly. The uneven application of royalty fees becomes apparent upon close examination of RIAA tactics. I urge you to read Wil Wheaton’s article and check out the links therein.

    Open Trackback Friday

Let’s see…more football, autumn begins this weekend and we had a tropical depression move through the area dumping loads of rain. That must mean it’s Open Trackback Friday once again!

Spinner Rims — Even Dumber Than Before September 20th, 2007

Sometimes the idiocy of people amazes me. Earlier this evening was a prime example. I am driving home from work on a 4-lane road. A rather well-worn (some would call it “beat up”) work pickup truck passes me in the left lane. As he is passing me I notice the truck is pulling an orange, two-axle, flat trailer one normally sees used most often by yardwork crews. This guy has a washer and dryer on the back. Then I noticed the wheels.

    Spinners.

You know…those goofy things, popular within the hip-hop community? Those wheel covers which spin independently of the wheel itself when the brakes are applied?

Yeah, this person had them on his trailer. Not the truck itself, folks, but the beatup, rusty, dusty, dirty TRAILER. And one of ‘em wasn’t even working properly…just hanging there, partially broken off so it was no longer balanced.

    That just seemed awfully ridiculous.

Strange Video: Familjen - “Det Snurrar I Min Skalle” September 19th, 2007

This video is highly unusual. The footage comes from unknown (at least to me) film footage from the 1960’s (possibly) of a charismatic healing service most likely from somewhere in Europe. It’s spliced together in such a way to make it appear that the preacher is actually singing the lyrics of the song while members of the congregation are reacting to the rhythms within the song itself. The techno music used is from the Swedish band Familjen and frankly it’s quite catchy. The creative editing of the film footage makes it highly interesting. The title of the song and video is “Det Snurrar I Min Skalle” (loosely translated means “It’s Spinning Inside My Head”). Normally I’m not a big fan of techno, but this song is pretty doggoned good even though I have no clue as to what the lyrics translate into English.

Beware The Cell Phone Battery Scam September 19th, 2007

    LG Cel Phone Battery LGIP-A1000E

I’ve been using an LG cell phone for a couple of years now. Maybe longer, I’m not sure. But the battery that came with it was definitely on its last legs. I’d charge it but when making a phone call, the power indicator would drop all the way down to only one bar meaning it was already approaching zero. By chance I was at one of those cell phone places in the mall and asked how much a replacement battery would cost. They didn’t carry this particular model but looked up how much a replacement battery would me.

    SIXTY-FIVE DOLLARS?!?

For that price, I could just buy a new cell phone. I never needed one with all sorts of bells and whistles.

I mentioned this to my supervisor at the time (I was working a part-time job at a small Baptist Church owned TV station) and he suggested I type in the model number on an ebay search. He thought I could get replacement batteries there much cheaper. He had already done so with batteries for his cell phone as well as various electronic equipment for the station. I took his suggestion and was amazed how cheaper the batteries were on ebay. I ended up getting 2 brand new batteries that were an UPGRADE (1100 mAh) from the original batteries (1000 mAh) for only $6.00 each. With shipping it was still well under $20 which is a far cry from the $65 for EACH battery that the local shops offered (some were a little cheaper, but not by much). And these were not refurbished batteries. There were brand new batteries.

So chalk another win for the little guy thanks to ebay. My suggestion is to check ebay if you’re looking for replacement cell phone batteries.

University Of Florida Student Tasered After Disrupting Kerry Appearance And Resisting Campus Police Officers September 18th, 2007

I imagine most astute readers now know about the UF student who was tasered after disrupting the Q&A portion of an appearance by John Kerry. Many jumped to conclusions claiming police brutality and others jumped to conclusions after seeing a video that contained only a portion of the incident. However the more information comes to light from eyewitneses, the more apparent it becomes that the student intended to disrupt and not only resisted arrest but committed assault on a police officer before they tasered him. Michelle Malkin has a lot of details on the incident but this particular detailed analysis taken from multiple videos shows the student to be an attention whore who obviously intended to disrupt and now openly brags about it. Malkin’s investigation as well as NeoCon’s reveals that the UF student has a long history of intentional confrontations and openly brags about those as well. I shed no sympathy for that classless UF student who has instigated this nonsense. The UF President has called for an investigation by FDLE which should, IMHO, exhonerate the officers but I predict the liberal MSM (who is already reporting this with a lot of misinformation) and ACLU will call for someone to pay for it so I expect at least one or two of the officers to lose his or her jobs over this. If that occurs, I hope they sue the pants off that UF student over it.

New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers September 16th, 2007

    Florida State Seminoles

I’ve been watching the Saints-Bucs game and frankly don’t know what the heck is going on with the Saints. I noted a story told by the announcers during the first half about the Saints holding a jazz funeral for the trophies, honors, etc. from last season so the team wouldn’t hold onto the past and concentrate on the future. Well apparently they buried much of the talent from last season as well and need to go dig it up ASAP. They are looking like the terrible Saints from the Aaron Brooks era. The offensive line isn’t giving Brees any protection. The defensive secondary is getting burned time and time again. I don’t know who the imposters are on the field wearing Reggie Bush’s and Deuce McAllister’s uniforms. Drew Brees is looking like a confused rookie. It’s completely embarrassing. I was hoping the huge loss to the Colts was a fluke but what the Saints AREN’T doing against the Bucs is showing me that perhaps not only was the Saints’ ability lacking but also their confidence.

The second half started and the Saints still look TERRIBLE.

The game mercifully ends with the Saints losing to the Bucs by a final score of 31-14. The Saints showed flashes of mediocrity. It really didn’t help matters when Fox Sports showed the graphic explaining that only 1% of teams starting the season with an 0-2 record made it to the playoffs.

You know it’s a bad game for the Saints when the best thing about it was the Visa commercial which featured the song “When The Saints Go Marching In” while Saints fans purchased stuff with their Visa cards.

Florida State Seminoles vs. Colorado Buffalos September 16th, 2007

    Florida State Seminoles

Florida State played the Colorado Buffalos late last night and frankly, I went to bed before the game was over. Sorry, but I had been up and running from 5am Saturday morning and even though I tried to watch some of the game, I was too exhausted to watch the finish. I didn’t even get to watch the beginning because my wife and I were have a wonderful evening at a friend’s home having dinner and watching the movie “1941.” However be that as it may, Florida State defeated the Buffalos 16-6 giving FSU a 2-1 overall record. They get next week off and then play the Crimson Tide of Alabama at Doak Campbell Stadium here in Tallahassee.

Florida A&M Rattlers vs. Howard Bison September 16th, 2007

    Florida A&M Rattlers

The Florida A&M Rattlers played the Howard Bison at home at Bragg Stadium in Tallahassee and won by a score of 30-17. This gives the Rattlers an overall 1-2 record and 1-1 in the MEAC. They have next week off and then play the Tennessee State Tigers at Bragg. So far it’s been a good day for teams I root for.
