I’m excited. Later on today, the New Orleans Saints, my favorite NFL team, play their final game at home in the Superdome against the Carolina Panthers. As for me, I’m still rooting for the Saints who have a first-round bye for the first time in team history. So this Sunday’s game means nothing and head coach Sean Payton has indicated that he’ll treat the game against Carolina in the Superdome as more of a preseason game. But it will be fitting to close out the Saints’ regular season at home where the fans have been needing something like this after Hurricane Katrina caused so much hardship and heartbreak. Some oddsmakers are giving the Saints 2-to-1 to win the NFC Championship. And some are even making predictions that the Saints might even win the Super Bowl. I ain’t going THAT far. I’m pleased as punch they’ve won the NFC South (I got a banner showing that from a Winn Dixie in Biloxi, Mississippi while visiting the inlaws). But if they WERE fortunate enough to win it all this season, they would have to be considered the Cinderella team of all Cinderella teams.

In an unrelated piece as reported in the Times-Picayune newspaper, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco said Friday she is optimistic that she’ll reach an agreement with the New Orleans Saints to keep the team in Louisiana beyond 2010. If she’s optimistic, then I’m worried. Hopefully the Chargers will bolt (pardon the intentional pun) to San Antonio instead of the Saints (as threatened by Saints owner Tom Benson - then NFL head honcho Paul Tagliabue sternly promised to block such a move if Benson tried it last season). The governor wants to keep the Saints in Louisiana and has indicated she was glad the team remained the “New Orleans Saints and not the San Antonio Saints” after Hurricane Katrina. The team played several games in San Antonio after the 2005 storm damaged the Superdome, but returned to New Orleans for the 2006 NFL season.

Gateway Pundit has compiled a rather lengthy list of links showing how unhinged many extreme liberals have become over the execution of “the Butcher of Baghdad” Saddam Hussein Also, Captain Ed over at Captain’s Quarters has a link to video of a WESH (Orlando TV station) anchor referring to Hussein’s execution as an “assassination.” You can’t make this stuff up, folks!

As I type this in Fox News just reported Saddam Hussein has reached the execution location.

UPDATE 9:59pm Eastern Time: Fox News is reporting that Al Arabiya Television has announced Hussein to be hung in the following minutes.

UPDATE 10:09pm Eastern Time: Fox News is reporting that Al Arabiya Television has announced that Saddam Hussein has been hung and is dead.

UPDATE 10:18pm Eastern Time: CBS News feels it important enough to interrupt primetime programming to announce Hussein’s death. On a double-standard note: CBS News didn’t interrupt late night programming to announce Gerald Ford’s death. Clear double standard.

According to a Reuters report, the news networks are planning “tasteful” coverage of Saddam Hussein’s execution that will be videotaped by Iraqi authorities.

Several sources said Saddam’s execution would be videotaped by the Iraqi government, though it wasn’t clear whether it would be released to the public or broadcast.

“We will video everything,” Iraqi National Security adviser Mouffak al Rubaie told CBS News.

Now considering that CNN found it “tasteful” to air footage of an Iraqi sniper shooting at American troops in Iraq, will they be consistent and find it equally as “tasteful” to air Saddam Hussein’s execution if the video is provided? The obvious answer: of course not! Consistency from CNN as well as the corporate mainstream drive-by media is nonexistent. Even as I type this entry, the drive-by media are reporting that Hussein’s execution could happen within “hours.” I also wonder if the Al Jazeera network will air the footage especially since they love to air footage of American captives being executed by terrorists? Probably not. Not as “tasteful.” But on YouTube…?

Interesting op-ed piece by Phil Rosenthal concerning CBS’s lack of on-air coverage of the death of Gerald Ford other than a crawl even though the Late Nite With David Letterman episode was an old rerun (and not a very good one at that).

A portion of Rosenthal’s column reads thusly:

When Gerald Ford died Tuesday, CBS didn’t even interrupt a “Late Show With David Letterman” rerun. It just ran the news as a headline across the bottom of the screen. NBC held to tradition with a bulletin during a rerun of “The Tonight Show,” and ABC News immediately shifted gears on “Nightline” with a special report.

Forget about hiring Katie Couric, building a new set and the rest of the cosmetic changes. Maybe this is the reinvention of TV news that CBS Inc. boss Leslie Moonves promised, a recognition that news is available in so many places now that content you provide exclusively–even an old talk-show rerun–takes precedence.

Or it might just have been a mistake.

To ask CBS News for an explanation on its handling of the Ford story is to be told by a spokeswoman that no one is available to address the issue and be reminded the news was relayed in its own timely way.

But when Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was near death in 2004, there were strict standing orders at CBS to run a “crawl” with news of his long-anticipated passing rather than interrupt programming. The producer who nonetheless cut into “CSI: New York” was fired.

A couple of questions come to mind. First, I wonder if CBS will interrupt programming when Saddam Hussein is hung. Secondly, if it were Jimmy Carter or Bill Clinton who died of natural causes, would CBS have interrupted a rerun of David Letterman?

I hope you all had a nice Christmas. My wife and I just got back from visiting her parents in Biloxi, Mississippi. And after a 6 hour drive we’ve just unloaded the car. Now my wife’s unwinding watching “Dr. Phil” on TV and I’m blogging. Back in the ol’ routine in under an hour. Nice.

This is a nice Christmas album. Nice. That’s about the best word for it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely not a bad Christmas album and I really like it, but if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary or unique or unusual, you’re not going to find it here. Amy Grant’s 1999 Christmas album is one that stands alone in it’s beauty and I feel it’s great to play softly on your stereo during your Christmas party. It has a nice (there’s that word again) mix of original Christmas songs (”A Christmas To Remember,” “Christmas Lullaby [I Will Lead You Home]“) with some standards (”Silent Night,” “Jingle Bell Rock”) and even a couple of instrumentals (”Highland Cathedral,” “Gabriel’s Oboe”). I didn’t find a Christmas connection with those instrumentals - I may be missing something although being of Scottish ancestry I did find “Highland Cathedral” quite stimulating with all the bagpipes. One song I found particularly…fun (HAH! Thought I’d say “nice” again, huh?!?) was “Mister Santa” which is a direct tribute to the classic swing tune “Mister Sandman” but applied to Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick.

I do like this album. It has some beautiful Christmas music that flows gently and I think would be a relaxing way to drift off to sleep on Christmas eve. Oh, by the way…Merry Christmas!

I first found about this series when I came across one of the earlier compilations on ebay. The CD had a cut by Ann & Nancy Wilson’s other band The Lovemongers that I truly liked. Then as a bonus for me, I really liked most of the other parts of the CD by other artists I had never heard of. That led me to keep an eye out for other albums in the series whenever I searched ebay. Each year, children’s hospitals and charities in the Pacific Northwest are benefited by the sales of these albums, the music of which all donated by artists in the region and in this case, some artists outside the region. This album, number eight in the series, is no exception. There’s lots of good Christmas music from several different genres on it. Pete Droge kicks things off with an original tune called “On Christmas Day” which is a romantic Christmas ballad. Ann & Nancy Wilson go with their original band Heart and sing “Christmas Waits.” Dave Matthews has a Christmas song, too called…well…”Christmas Song.” And that just the first three songs! My favorite song on the album is Harvey Danger’s “Sometimes You Have To Work On Christmas (Sometimes)” because it reminds me of all the times I had to work Christmas. Captain Smartypants does the classic “Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town” a la a 50’s doo-wop group. Kinda weird, but entertaining nonetheless. Another Christmas song that I really like on this CD is the classic “Go Tell It On The Mountain” performed by Deneen Grant featuring The Total Experience Gospel Choir. It’s done in the wonderful gospel church tradition and as such is moving and inspirational. This is a wonderful Christmas album that was originally released in 2005. The ninth in the series is available now and proceeds go to worthy causes.

Christmas is not only a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, but it’s also a time of fun. This album definitely adds to the fun of the holiday. Bill Engvall’s take on different aspects of Christmas is quite funny. For example, “I’m Getting Sued By Santa Claus” is exactly as the title implies. With such a lawsuit-happy society, it’s not far-fetched to imagine Santa Claus filing a lawsuit against someone for mental anguish among other things. Engvall is famous for his “here’s yer sign” routines and he takes in a Christmas vein with “Here’s Your Sign Christmas.” However even Engvall gets serious and goes back to the Biblical roots of the Christmas season with “The Christmas Sign” which is genuinely touching. Engvall also turns very sentimental in a Red Sovine manner with “The Bike” (shades of “Teddy Bear”!). I believe this album can make even the most Scrooge-like people smile.

From beginning to (almost the) end, this is a great Christmas album. The album starts off strong with the title cut “The Reason For The Season” which is an original sentimental Christmas ballad that will tug at the heartstrings. The combine American patriotism with Christmas in “God Bless American This Christmas.” They get quite Buffett-esque with “Tropical Christmas,” a song all parrotheads probably will like. The Brothers give us a view of Christmas via someone left over from the 60’s generation in “Old Hippie Christmas.” This Christmas CD has a nice combination of traditional tunes as well as original ones, but the only downside in my opinion is the final track where they take one of their biggest hits “Let Your Love Flow” and put it to a reggae beat calling it “Let Your Love Flow (Reggae Holiday Mix).” Nothing really holiday about it. It seemed someone felt it necessary to tack it onto the end of the album to fill up space. It doesn’t fit the spirit of the prior 13 cuts. However that minor transgression doesn’t kill the mood and I think it makes a really great Christmas CD (as long as you skip cut number 14).

If you listen to classic rock radio, you’ve heard music by Jethro Tull like “Thick As A Brick” and “Aqualung.” This is Ian Anderson’s foray into Christmas music and it definitely is identifiable and unmistakable as Jethro Tull. Many original songs and unique arrangements of traditional & classic tunes permiate this album. For example, “Holly Herald” is a very lively medley of “The Holly And The Ivy” combined with “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” with sort of an Irish fling thrown in for good measure. Pretty cool and a shame it doesn’t get any airplay from the radio stations around here that go all Christmas during December. I really like Anderson’s take on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” which is a lively jazz tune featuring not only Anderson on flute but various solos on jazz guitar, cool keyboards, organ and other instruments. I describe it as a round of instruments weaving their way through the traditional song. I really like Anderson’s arrangement of “Greenesleeves” which is slyly retitled “Greenesleeved.” Anderson also has several original songs on the Christmas CD with varying levels of connection to Christmas. A couple don’t really address Christmas at all directly but capture the mood of December’s wintery atmosphere both from a European standpoint as well as an American standpoint (specifically New York City). Jethro Tull fans will definitely appreciate this album as will Christmas music afficionados like myself. It’s one of the more unique and special Christmas CD’s I picked up in 2006.

Michelle Malkin has an excellent year-in-review of Islamofascism and how it has been expressed through violence, intimidation, coercion and other evil ways. The small percentage of Muslims behaving in this wicked way have unfairly put orthodox believers in Islam in a negative light.

This is the second Christmas CD featured in this year’s list with an Elvis impersonator. This time Dread Zeppelin’s Tortelvis. This is also the second Dread Zeppelin Christmas CD I have (the first being “The First No-Elvis”). It starts out pretty much with fairly straightforward reggae renditions of Christmas classics like “Blue Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” with Tortelvis wandering in and out of Elvis-ness with his singing style. Then they rock out with an interesting take on “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” followed up with an unique “Let It Snow” with a stinging guitar. It gets a little weird when Tortelvis belts out an over-the-top “O Come All Ye Faithful” with a laid-back reggae beat. “Silver Bells” continues the reggae mood but is followed up with a hip-hop-ish “Sleigh Ride” and Tortelvis…rapping? Weird. They get back to the reggae with a pretty darned good “White Christmas.” The finalè is the “DZ Christmas Dub” which, in essence, is just plain strange.

This album definitely isn’t for everyone. Purists will absolutely hate it but if you’re open minded, have a sense of humor, maybe even are a reggae fan, give this Christmas CD a listen. You just might like it like I do.
