We members of the “Who Dat Nation” are back in familiar territory: saying “wait’ll next year” which is an oft-repeated mantra at the end of the NFL season. The Saints lost their final game of the regular season 33-25 to the Chicago Bears. They only had a slim chance of making the playoffs but they had to win this game in order to maintain that chance. After the 2006 season which saw the Saints end up with a 10-6 record which culminated in a playoff loss to the Chigaco Bears who also beat them today.
With no Saints in the Pro-Bowl, the next NFL event to look forward to will be the NFL draft which hopefully will add some depth to the team and shore up the weak spots in the offensive line and also on defense (especially the backfield). So I’ll mope around for a little while, get over it and eagerly await next season. GEAUX SAINTS!

Normally I don’t post much concerning politics because politics tends to disgust me and aggravate me to no end. However the following was sent to me in email and I felt it was something worthy to include on this blog. I don’t know who the author is, but the following two paragraphs make a great point.
In a news conference Deanna Favre announced she will be the starting QB for the Packers this coming Sunday. Deanna asserts that she is qualified to be starting QB because she has spent the past 16 years married to Brett while he played QB for the Packers. During this period of time she became familiar with the definition of a corner blitz, and is now completely comfortable with other terminology of the Packers offense. A survey of Packers fans shows that 50% of those polled supported the move.
Does this sounds idiotic and unbelievable to you? Well, Hillary Clinton makes the same claims as to why she is qualified to be President and 50% of democrats polled agreed. She has never run a City, County, or State. When told Hillary Clinton has experience because she has 8 years in the white house, Dick Morris stated “so has the pastry chef”.
I cannot and will not support Hillary Clinton in any way, fashion or form. She’s untrustworthy and an avowed socialist who will cause great harm to the United States if she is elected President and especially combined with a Democratic Party controlled Congress. I won’t try to predict the outcome of the Presidential election nor either of the Primaries but I will predict that next year will expose U.S. citizens the most nasty, bitter, and vile campaigns in history. And frankly, I don’t relish that at all.
BTW, crossed fingers as highlighted in the above photo is a military sign meaning “distress.” It is taught to military personnel to use when the enemy photographs them for propaganda purposes in situations they are coerced into. It is used to covertly signal that they were forced into the situation and did not engage in it voluntarily nor with support. So this soldier was obviously forced to shake Hillary’s hand in a planned photo-op and he successfully showed the world he didn’t want to do it.

As I sit here in at the keyboard of my computer wearing a game-worn home Mississippi State University Bulldogs football jersey, I am pleased as punch to announce that the ‘Dawgs have won the 2007 Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee by defeating the University of Central Florida Knights with a final score of 10-3. It was definitely a defensive struggle with key interceptions by the MSU defense and two missed FG’s by the mostly dependable UCF kicker making the difference in the game. GO DAWGS!

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Messy” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. For this week’s entry I am posting a picture I took near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi about 6-9 months after Hurricane Katrina. It is a mess made after taking apart a long abandoned casino sign for a casino that went out of business several years previously. [UPDATE: I have been informed by someone who lived nearby for many years that the name of the casino was "The Jubilee Casino." Apparently the sign is now gone and has been replaced by a sign advertising the Silver Slipper Casino.] The sign had been abandoned and officials decided that leaving it as-is would run the risk of being knocked down and perhaps becoming airborn and causing more damage.
Someone informed me of the name of the long defunct casino but I cannot recall it at the moment. Here is the abandoned sign a couple of years before Hurricane Katrina.

It’s the last weekend before the new year. Frankly, I haven’t gotten excited about new year’s eve since I was about 12 or 13 years of age. It was and continues to be a boring event for me. So, on new year’s eve, I’ll probably go to bed early so I’ll get a good night’s sleep before the bowl games on new year’s day. However, today marks the final Open Trackback Friday for 2007! It is your opportunity to share interesting blog entries from your blog by using this blog’s trackback feature. Many people, including myself enjoy reading a variety of material from other people’s blogs, so link your post to this one, send a trackback to it and it’ll appear in the comments section after I manually approve it. I still approve all comments & trackbacks manually due to spam bots so it won’t show up immediately, but I will get to it as soon as I can. I am still using myself as the ultimate spam filter but now have the aid of an excellent trackback filter. To obtain the trackback URL simply rightclick where it says “trackback” below and then click on “copy shortcut” to get it. That’s all there is to it! And thank you in advance for trackbacking to my blog. And while you’re here, please take some time to look at some articles I’ve posted. Maybe you’ll find something interesting. If you do, trackback to it as well.

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. (Luke 2:1-20)
It was the Christmas morning tradition of my maternal grandparents to read the story of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from the Bible. It reminded us all of the true reason of why we celebrate Christmas. It is a tradition I remember fondly and one I try to carry on even if it is just my wife and I. And I wanted to share this tradition with you, dear reader.
May you have a very blessed and merry Christmas.
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle ’til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there.

The following story (and variants thereof) are being sent via email to people the world over. It may sound like an urban legend but according to Snopes and other reliable sources, it is absolutely true. From Snopes:
“SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT”
During World War I, in the winter of 1914, on the battlefields of Flanders, one of the most unusual events in all of human history took place. The Germans had been in a fierce battle with the British and French. Both sides were dug in, safe in muddy, man-made trenches six to eight feet deep that seemed to stretch forever.
All of a sudden, German troops began to put small Christmas trees, lit with candles, outside of their trenches. Then, they began to sing songs. Across the way, in the “no man’s land” between them, came songs from the British and French troops. Incredibly, many of the Germans, who had worked in England before the war, were able to speak good enough English to propose a “Christmas” truce.
The British and French troops, all along the miles of trenches, accepted. In a few places, allied troops fired at the Germans as they climbed out of their trenches. But the Germans were persistent and Christmas would be celebrated even under the threat of impending death.
According to Stanley Weintraub, who wrote about this event in his book, Silent Night, “signboards arose up and down the trenches in a variety of shapes. They were usually in English, or - from the Germans - in fractured English. Rightly, the Germans assumed that the other side could not read traditional gothic lettering, and that few English understood spoken German. ‘YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT’ was the most frequently employed German message. Some British units improvised ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS’ banners and waited for a response. More placards on both sides popped up.”
A spontaneous truce resulted. Soldiers left their trenches, meeting in the middle to shake hands. The first order of business was to bury the dead who had been previously unreachable because of the conflict.
Then, they exchanged gifts. Chocolate cake, cognac, postcards, newspapers, tobacco. In a few places, along the trenches, soldiers exchanged rifles for soccer balls and began to play games.
It didn’t last forever. In fact, some of the generals didn’t like it at all and commanded their troops to resume shooting at each other. After all, they were in a war. Soldiers eventually did resume shooting at each other. But only after, in a number of cases, a few days of wasting rounds of ammunition shooting at stars in the sky instead of soldiers in the opposing army across the field.
For a few precious moments there was peace on earth good will toward men. All because the focus was on Christmas. Happens every time. There’s something about Christmas that changes people. It happened over 2000 years ago in a little town called Bethlehem. It’s been happening over and over again down through the years of time.
This week, Lord willing, it will happen again.
A cross, left near Ypres in Belgium in 1999, to commemorate the site of the Christmas Truce in 1914. The text reads: “1914 The Khaki Chum’s Christmas Truce 1999 85 Years Lest We Forget.”
The 2005 movie “Joyeux Noël” is based upon the Christmas Truce of 1914. The story is about six main characters: a Scottish priest working as a stretcher-bearer; a Scottish Lieutenant; the French Lieutenant Audebert, the reluctant son of a general, whose call to fight has meant leaving his bedbound pregnant wife; a Jewish German Lieutenant, and two famous opera stars, German tenor Nikolaus Sprink and his Danish lover Anna Sörensen. It is available on DVD.

In an earlier post I mentioned the “Bear Tree” at the church I attend (Lake Jackson United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Florida). During the month of December, stuffed animals are collected and following the children’s portion of the service, each child takes one of the stuffed animals and puts it on the tree. Later on the remainder of that Sunday’s stuffed animal donations are strategically placed by adults to keep the whole thing from toppling over. At the end of December, all of the stuffed animals will be boxed up and donated to local law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals and other agencies that deal with children whom have experienced a traumatic event. Since I mentioned the “Bear Tree,” I wanted to take a picture before this evening’s Christmas Eve service (which was wonder and moving, I must say) and put it on the blog to show everyone. You may want to mention this to your church’s pastor for a possible project for next year.

One of my favorite singers of all time is Aaron Neville. I have just about all of his albums (as well as almost all albums by all members of the Neville family). The following are three videos culled from the Aaron Neville Louisiana Christmas Concert television special from some years back. The first video is “Louisiana Christmas Day.”
This video is Aaron Neville covering the Charles Brown classic “Please Come Home For Christmas.”
And finally, here is Aaron Neville performing “Silent Night” as a duet with Linda Ronstadt. Simply beautiful.

Sometimes little things can make me smile. Take for instance the case of Northport vs Southport, two towns in the state of Florida. It is a part of my job to be exposed to a lot of raw data including just about every city and town in the state of Florida. So I found it somewhat amusing to find that Southport is in the northern portion of the state (in the Florida panhandle near Panama City, Florida) and is actually a port while Northport is far south of there in the southern part of the state near Port Charlotte and is much less of a port town than Southport (only has a couple of canals leading to the Myakka River and is mostly landlocked).
Just a personal amusing thought.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Barenaked Ladies long before they hit it big in the United States. To give you an idea, I drove almost 200 miles to find a copy of the original release of their CD “Gordon” many years ago. I actually wrote about my adventures in trying to obtain a copy and it was published in a local music publication that was in existance back then. My first published credit. How cool is that?
Be that as it may, this is Barenaked Ladies’ lighthearted take on Christmas from Santa’s elves’ point of view and was performed live on television.
And here’s a rather clever homemade video for “Elf’s Lament.”
