When I was a kid, the PBS stations in Mississippi played Ernie Kovacs’ shows on Saturday evenings. The absurdity and surrealism of the Nairobi Trio bit really made an impression upon me and it was one of my favorites from his show as it still is today.
And as an added bonus, a video mashup with “House Of Fun” by Madness (my favorite music group of all time) combined with video from The Ernie Kovacs Show.

Friday couldn’t come swiftly enough this week and now it’s the Memorial Day weekend. Don’t lose sight of whom the holiday remembers.
I’m glad I am not traveling on the roadways this weekend with all the traffic and because gas being so expensive. Regardless of that it’s Open Trackback Friday!. I got tagged by Butch over at 123beta for a meme called “8 Things.” The rules are as follows:

Honestly, even though I probably could come up with the emails of 8 bloggers, I don’t know enough bloggers well enough to ask them to continue this meme. However for 8 random (but probably not unknown if you’ve read my blog for any length of time) facts about me:
1] My favorite soft drink is and always has been Barq’s root beer.
2] I come from a family of collectors and I tend to be the collector of collections since I have several collections (guitars, corklined soda pop caps, Boy Scout memorabilia, CD’s, knives, books, hockey jerseys and a few other minor collections).
3] All Mardi Gras parades (with one exception) I have attended were in Mobile, Alabama where Mardi Gras originated in the United States.
4] I started a career in radio when I was 13 years old. It lasted about 20 years afterwards. And I loved every minute of it. I wish I could find a station with an “old school” mentality rather than current formatting where everything is so tight and scripted. Incidentally I’ve worked in just about every radio format imaginable.
5] My first computer had a 40 meg hard drive and a 2400 baud modem. And at that time, it was top-of-the line.
6] I first learned a computer language (BASIC) on a Radio Shack TRS-80 computer at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, FL. My second computer course there was the last semester they used a punch card system.
7] My first job out of college was as a public high school math teacher. My experiences were so horrific that I’d rather starve in the streets than teach school ever again.
8] I married my high school sweetheart 21 years ago this June 14th.
There you have it. 8 things about me.

Well it’s official! My brother’s adoption of a child from Guatamala was approved today. I am now the Uncle of the child you see in the photograph above. His name will be Thomas Michael although at this time I don’t know if my brother will calling him Thomas, Tom, Tommy, Mike or something else. [UPDATE: My brother has informed me the cute little tyke will be called Thomas.] Also due to a massive backlog because of several corrupt Guatamalan adoption agencies being caught selling babies (violations of the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption), he is going to have to wait an estimated 3-6 weeks before being called down to Guatamala to be given the child. However it will happen and all of my family are very excited.

In an earlier post I wrote about the hypocrisy of Washington Democrats and extreme liberals concerning accusing conservative Republicans of having overwhelming corruption within its ranks while conveniently ignoring its own internal (and infernal) corruption. Today, Ed Morrissey over at Captain’s Quarters shows how little Washington Democrats are actually DOING to eliminate the “culture of corruption” that exists within their own party. Remember, folks, Nancy Pelosi PROMISED to reform Congress as to eliminate the corruption within but seems to be unable and/or unwilling to actually follow through on her promises. Why am I not surprised?
On a related note, even though Jack Murtha violated House rules, it appears Murtha bought his way out of being reprimanded. Wizbang! blog has more details. Nice ethics, Jack.

Last Saturday was Go Out And See Tallahassee day which is a once a year event where many Tallahassee attractions open up for visitors with free admission. My wife and I went to the Alfred B. Maclay Gardens and I took the following pictures.

Carl Pre-surgery (left) and today (right). How cool is that?!?
On March 2nd, 2006 I was wheeled into an operating room at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital to have roux-n-y gastric bypass surgery performed by Dr. Elliot Sieloff. Today I am over 160 pounds lighter. I have gone from wearing a fairly snug 64 inch pants to 44 inch shorts (which fit a tad loose — I may be able to fit into a size 42 fairly soon). From a 5XL shirt to an XL shirt. Folks, I ain’t been able to fit into a 44 inch pair of shorts or pants since I was a freshman in college! I’m shooting to lose about 70-80 more pounds. Hopefully my wife and I can find good jobs with health insurance that will cover gastric bypass surgery so she can have it performed and lose weight with me (I was the test guinea pig).

I would haven’t believed it if someone told me about this without checking it out for myself, but porn magazine publisher Larry Flynt actually is being more respectful and classy in his remarks about Jerry Falwell than most I’ve seen, heard, & read in the liberal world. Whereas the extreme liberals in the mainstream drive-by media, blogging community and the large number of Falwell-haters making vitriolic comments, Flynt is actually saying pleasant things about Falwell:
The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the 1988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor.
My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling.
The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in.
Frankly, I have a very low opinion of Larry Flynt and disagree with him on countless issues, but I have to reluctantly and surprisingly have to give him kudos on the civility he has shown concerning Falwell unlike others in the liberal community.

Bo Diddley is in intensive care after suffering a stroke in western Iowa, a publicist said Wednesday.
The 78-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was listed in guarded condition at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., said Susan Clary, a publicist for the musician’s management team.
Diddley, who has a history of hypertension and diabetes, was hospitalized Sunday following a concert in Council Bluffs in which he acted disoriented, she said.
Tests indicated that the stroke affected the left side of his brain, impairing his speech and speech recognition, Clary said.
Clary said she has no other details on Diddley’s condition or how long he would be in intensive care.
Diddley, with his black glasses and low-slung guitar, has been an icon in the music industry since he topped the R&B charts with “Bo Diddley” in 1955. His other hits include “Who Do You Love,” “Before You Accuse Me,” “Mona” and “I’m a Man.”
Diddley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and was given a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1998.
Coincidentally my Mom and I were talking about Bo Diddley just ove a week ago. At age 78, health problems tend to increase and a major stroke may take a person downhill rather swiftly. My prayers and thoughts go out to him, his family and friends.
UPDATE: Apparently Bo Diddley has been up and walking about the intensive-care unit at Creighton University Medical Center. Doctors there even feel he could make such a recovery that he would be able to perform again. He’s still having some issues with speech but doctors at the medical center point out that the part of the brain that controls speech is a different portion that controls singing and that many people who have problems with speech are able to sing without difficulties. I, for one, pray for a full and speedy recovery for Bo Diddley.

Prospective Presidential hopeful Fred Thompson recently wrote an op-ed piece about the pathetically bad health care system in Cuba and addressed Michael Moore’s recent trip to Cuba (currently under investigation by the State Department for possible violations of travel restrictions). Apparently Moore filmed his little journey for a new movie that bashes America for not having government-provided health care. Moore loves to bash America with his not-so-truthful “documentaries.” Imagine if he were Cuban and tried to make a documentary bashing Castro. Thompson did. I’ll get to that in a moment.
In Thompson’s op-ed piece, he wrote:
The truth is that Cuban medical care has never recovered from Castro’s takeover — when the country’s health care ranked among the world’s best. He won the support of the Cuban people by promising to replace Batista’s dictatorship with free elections, and to end corruption. Once in power, though, he made himself dictator and instituted Soviet-style Communism. Cubans not only failed to regain their democratic rights, their economy plunged into centrally planned poverty.
As many as half of Cuba’s doctors fled almost immediately — and defections continue to this day. Castro won’t allow observers in to monitor his nation’s true state, but defectors tell us that many Cubans live with permanent malnutrition and long waits for even basic medical services. Many treatments we take for granted aren’t available at all — except to the Communist elite or foreigners with dollars.
For them, Castro keeps “show” clinics equipped with the best medicines and technologies available. It was almost certainly one of these that Moore went to, if the stories in the NY Post and the Daily News are true.
Nothing about this story inspires doubt, though. Elements in Hollywood have been infatuated with the Cuban commander for years. It always leaves me shaking my head when I read about some big-time actor or director going to Cuba and gushing all over Castro. And, regular as rain, they bring up the health care myth when they come home.
According to published reports, when Castro had his latest hospitalizations he brought in doctors from outside Cuba. He won’t trust Cuban doctorswith his own health. This is a fact that Moore conveniently ignores and probably won’t even warrant a passing mention in his upcoming hatchet-job of a film.
But apparently Moore, the publicity-whore that he is, decided that even though he couldn’t answer Thompson’s points challenged Thompson to a debate. Here’s Thompson’s response:
I can’t imagine a better response to Moore’s desperate attempt to get free publicity. Even if Thompson did engage Moore in a debate it would have been like Moore bringing only a knife to a gunfight. Don’t engage in a battle of wits when you are unarmed, Michael. Thompson has Moore outclassed and is better informed and better prepared than Moore. Incidentally, some liberals and Moore supporters are trying to claim that Moore is correct in his point about Thompson and his Cuban cigars. Turns out Moore is wrong:
New York, June 19, 2001 (AP) - Members of the U.S. Congress have exempted themselves from U.S. Department of the Treasury regulations that determine the value of Cuban produced products that can legally be brought back to the U.S., according to the New York-based U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council Inc.

“You know… I’ve been looking at my schedule Michael and I don’t think I have time for you. But I may be the least of your problems. You know, the next time you’re down in Cuba visiting your buddy Castro, you might ask him about another documentary filmmaker — name is Nicolas Guillen. He did something Castro didn’t like and they put him in a mental institution for several years, giving him devastating electro-shock treatments. Mental institution, Michael. Might be something you outta think about.” — Senator Fred Thompson 5/15/07

I just found out that respected Christian teacher and evangelist Dr. Jerry Falwell passed on today. He was found unresponsive in his office according to an official at Liberty University. Falwell, 73, was rushed to a Lynchburg, Virginia, hospital, where he was given CPR. Falwell was hospitalized twice in early 2005 with acute onset pulmonary edema, or congestive heart failure, and at one point was placed on a ventilator. He and his wife, Macel, have three children.
Regardless of how one feels personally about the man, it is unarguable to say that he was a Godly man and an excellent teacher of God’s Word. I have read some of his materials and learned much from them. My thoughts and prayers and condolences go out to his family and friends.
Update: I read some of the bile from the so-called “tolerant” liberals and have found it completely disgusting. Also a couple of blogs that I regularly read who have a leftist bent but normally have been respectful have gone off the deep end into the muck over this. Although it angers me, it goes to show that Dr. Falwell was teaching the message of Jesus Christ with passion, compassion and vigor and there are those who hated him for it. Jerry Falwell stood firm in his conservative beliefs and the liberals who now are writing such foul things are only exposing themselves for the haters they truly are. However I take comfort in the fact that God has told Dr. Falwell, “‘Well done, good and faithful servant” today as He welcomed Jerry.
Update: Over at Captain’s Quarters, Mathew Reynolds has some remembrances of Jerry Falwell which gives first-hand examples of Falwell’s real, loving nature as well as his sense of humor.

After studying the matter thoroughly, the most logical and correct conclusions that I have reached are as follows:
1) Orthodox Christianity and orthodox Islam have never and are not compatible although they may co-exist peacefully.
2) Those claiming otherwise are either not truly understanding of either orthodox Christianity or orthodox Islam (or both).
3) The God of Christianity is not nor ever has been the Allah of Islam.
There will be those who will read what I have wrote and call me a “hate monger” and an “Islamaphobe.”
Boo-freakin’-hoo. I couldn’t care less. It’s not my problem.
I make it no secret that I am Christian and I believe Jesus Christ when he said quite clearly, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
That’s the way, the truth, and the life. Not a way, a truth, and a life.
Jesus made an absolute statement there, not a statement of choices. It’s either His way or no way in regards to orthodox Christianity. However the choice is either to accept it or not. No one should force Christian doctrine down another’s throat. Orthodox Christianity is a choice. We share our testimony, our faith and then either the person hearing it either accepts it or not. Orthodox Christianity doesn’t teach violence against those who reject Christianity.
If my viewpoint offends you, then so be it. I can live with that. It’s really no skin off my nose. If you wish to try to goad me into an argument over it, you’ll be wasting your time. I ain’t biting. And any comments left that are nothing but attempts at trolling or are merely attempts to insult, they will be deleted. Dissenting comments are fine and will be accepted, just try to stick to a point, be somewhat rational and civil and it should pass muster.
