PhotoHunt 82: Classic

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Classic” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This one is from my paternal Grandmother’s photo album which she gave to me several years ago. Yep, that’s me in the goofy outfit with the equally goofy smile sitting on the edge of the door frame of my Grandmother’s black Ford Thunderbird. Please keep the comments respectful and don’t give me too much grief, willya?

This second picture is of the original Victory Bridge in Chattahoochee, Florida. Construction began on the Victory Bridge in 1919 and it dedicated in ceremonies on July 20, 1922 and was given the name “Victory” for the allied victory in World War I. Soon after completion of the bridge, work began on paving U.S. 90. The bridge remained in operation until the 1960’s when a new Victory Bridge was constructed. The picture seen here is from the eastern side of the Chattahoochee River where the majority of the bridge still survives although is only used for foot traffic (the last several feet of the bridge is sealed off to the public by the Army Corp of Engineers which has instruments to keep an accurate gauge of the river’s depth). It is of a solid concrete construction.

The third and final picture is of the famous S.S. Hurricane Camille in Gulfport, Mississippi. I took this picture about 9 months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. There used to be a gift shop behind and to the right of the boat. The future of the S.S. Hurricane Camille is in question. However the origins of how it came to be is interesting. The 72-foot tugboat “East Point” was pushed ashore in August 1969 during Hurricane Camille with its bow facing west on property owned by Lucille Moody’s parents. The family noticed curious crowds would gather to take pictures after the storm and because it was a natural attraction for tourists and locals, the Moodys bought the boat and changed the name to the “S.S. Hurricane Camille.” Railroad tracks were built to scoot the vessel more than 200 feet south to where it sits today (for now). Moody opened a tiny gift shop near the stern in 1970 where it remained in business until Hurricane Katrina. The S.S. Hurricane Camille survived Katrina but the small gift shop was completely washed away by the winds and tidal surge leaving only the concrete slab. The Moody family is planning on selling the property after Hurricane Katrina and more than likely it will be snapped up by developers who will more than likely scrap the boat which has long become an unofficial monument to not one but two major hurricanes in history of Gulfport, Mississippi.

Hey, I wouldn’t give you any grief because I remember those cars and have many equally goofy photos. I’m NOT posting the one of me with the home perm gone wrong, for instance!
Have you submitted a post for the November 7, 2007, Carnival of Family Life, the first edition with the Carnival’s new administrator? You can submit a post at Colloquium (http://www.jhsiess.com)! Come join us!

Terrorist Training Camps in Georgia
I’ve written before about a suspected terrorist training camp in Odum, Georgia. The Muslims of Americas Georgia camp has been under some scrutiny since 1983. I’ve also written about the camp in Islamberg, New York.

Phelps and Westboro Baptist ordered to pay millions to slain Marine’s Father: Suppression of free speech or just desserts
It is a serious question and one I am admittedly bothered by. Let me explain, but first I want to make it clear that I abhor Phelps and his protests at Soldiers funerals, and his entire anti gay campaign.
To be double clear, Phelps and his ch…
