Spring Creek Restaurant

A couple of years ago while my wife and I were spending a weekend on St. George Island near Apalachicola, Florida I picked up two books written by Florida author Leo Lovel. The books contain short stories from Lovel’s life and in it he mentions his restaurant, Spring Creek Restaurant, many times. If you are in the restaurant, which I highly recommend, purchase copies of the books. Both are excellent reads. The books are also available in some of the interesting shops around downtown Apalachicola, Florida.

However for some unknown reason, we never got around to driving down to Spring Creek and dining at the Spring Creek Restaurant but recently we rectified the omission by driving down on a Saturday afternoon to dine there. We’ve lived in Tallahassee over 20 years now and I mentally kicked myself for not going there sooner. Spring Creek Restaurant has an atmosphere that immediately just felt right to me the first moments I was inside. We were served quickly by a wonderful waitress who was friendly, attentive and informative. She made us feel very welcome. And the food was wonderful. First off, their salad was brought in a large bowl in which we served ourselves. Be forewarned, the lettuce leaves are quite large and mostly uncut so you’ll need to cut or tear them however you prefer. Mason jars full of bacon bits and freshly made croutons are included on each and every table. Their house dressing is also on each table in large, green corked bottles and although they offer a variety of other dressings, I strongly urge you to try the house dressing. It’s creamy and delicious. Their specials vary from day to day depending upon what is caught that day. The day we made our first visit, one of the specials was broiled flounder freshly caught early that morning but we were warned that they were down to the last few and once someone ordered them, it would be wiped from the board near the entranceway. However as much as I love flounder (my favorite fish), I was in the mood for some fried oysters and my wife wanted shrimp (both from the local waters). Both were extremely fresh and delicious. We’ve gone back for a second visit only a couple of weeks ago and on that particular Saturday the special was stone crab claws which I haven’t had in decades. Let me tell you, those stone crabs were exquisite! They were a outstanding treat.
Although the restaurant itself does not have a website (I wish it did), it is featured on several other websites such as Florida Secrets which has a section highlighting Spring Creek Restaurant including directions and their phone number.

Also mentioned often in both Spring Creek Chronicles and Spring Creek Chronicles II is mullet fishing. Now mullet is an interesting species of fish and Leo Lovel was a mullet fisherman for many years until special interest groups managed to convince enough Florida voters to include extreme and inconsistently-enforced mullet net ban laws in the Florida Constitution. This effectively killed a once thriving industry. I lived through all the pre-election controversy and actually took the time to research the topic and found that much of what the special interests were presenting in their campaigns against mullet nets were misleading at the very least and outright fabrications at worst. However they had enough money and enough influence to convince enough voters to include it in the Florida Constitution. I, for one, voted against it and even voiced my opinion on local talk radio shows with facts to back up my position. Now, it’s almost impossible to get it removed from the Florida Constitution as being that it is inconsistently enforced, mullet fishermen were pretty much wiped out unecessarily. At Spring Creek Restaurant there is a mullet skiff located in front of the building which could be the one Leo Lovel wrote about in his books. If Mr. Lovel were present the times we were at the restaurant, I would have asked.

This is a closeup of the sign that accompanies the mullet skiff. It sums up the net ban.
If you are ever visiting the Tallahassee area or live around these parts, I wholeheartedly recommend Spring Creek Restaurant as one of the best seafood restaurants in the big bend area. It is indeed a hidden treasure located on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Carl,
Dandy blog. Still have a lot of reading to do. I live outside of Orlando which way to the restaurant from here? Sounds good. Not a native so it’s either toward Jax or Miami. When I lived in NY it was the city up state or the Hamptons, VA it was Baltimore or Richmond. Sorry, just my navigation system, took years to get it set up. So just point me in a direction. Have a good one.
