PhotoHunt 87: Long

PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Long” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This week, I have an image from nearby Chattahoochee, Florida.

The original Victory Bridge in Chattahoochee, Florida

The concrete bridge segment in this photo is the original Victory Bridge. Construction began on the Victory Bridge in 1919 and it was dedicated in ceremonies on July 20, 1922 and given the name “Victory” for the allied victory in World War I. Soon after completion of the bridge, work began on paving U.S. Highway 90. The bridge remained in operation until the 1960’s when a new Victory Bridge was constructed. This photo was taken on the eastern side of the Apalachicola River where the majority of the bridge still survives although is only used for foot traffic (the last several feet of the bridge is sealed off to the public by the United States Geological Survey which has instruments to keep an accurate gauge of the river’s water resources). The total length of the surviving bridge is about a half of a mile. So I think it qualifies as long. The bridge behind the original Victory Bridge is the current U.S. Highway 90 bridge which is the third bridge built spanning the river.

There are many more photographs of the original Victory Bridge on my online photo album. I invite you to visit it and see the pictures I have online not only of the Victory Bridge but other places I have been.

How odd that they kept only about half of an historic bridge. But I guess it’s better than nothing, and I’m glad people can use it now. It’s lovely.

Love posts with old Florida pics … I use a lot of this stuff on my blog, too. Have you been to the Florida Memory Project at the Florida Department of State? If not, you’ve gotta check it out — tons of photos — you’ll be addicted in no time.

    Great blog!
