Sister Hazel — Santa’s Playlist

Sister Hazel -- Santa's Playlist

Sister Hazel is a band whose greatest hit was a song called “All For You.” They are a north Florida-based band who released their first ever Christmas CD entitled “Santa’s Playlist.” Upfront I have to tell you that I am very biased because I’ve been a fan of this band even before they hit it big. They played Tallahassee several times and although I never saw them live, their initial self-titled CD released on the Croakin’ Poets label was highly recommended by a clerk at one of the local CD shops who knew me as a regular customer and knew my eclectic tastes in music. Suffice to say, I took him up on his recommendation and haven’t regretted it at all.

Sister Hazel -- Santa's Playlist

Anyway in regards to “Santa’s Playlist”, the playlist is a mixture of original tunes as well as some covers. The style is pretty eclectic. One that surprised me a bit was “Christmas Time Again” which starts off sounding like a sexy R&B tune but quickly shifts into a rap with Stax Records-esque 70’s era choruses thrown in. Somewhat of a departure from their normal sound. It’s interesting and created I imagine with tongure firmly planted in cheek.

And then on another interesting change of pace you have”There’s Something In The Air (At Christmastime)” which is sung by some children with the members of Sister Hazel singing backup. Add a tuba solo and you have a fun little new Christmas tune.

Their covers are quite well done. “Little Drummer Boy” is done mostly acoustically with wonderful harmonies. You can clearly hear why Ken Block sometimes gets confused with John Popper (Blues Traveler). I particularly enjoy their cover of “Merry Christmas Baby” keeping the spirit of the blues classic but giving it their own unique take. It’s my favorite tune on the CD. They are quite faithful to the original feeling of “Please Come Home For Christmas” plus their versions of “Silent Night” and “Oh Holy Night” are fantastically beautiful.

This is one Christmas CD I’ve listened to over and over. I’ll probably continue to do so. Again I admit I’m heavily biased since I’ve been a Sister Hazel fan (referred to as a “Hazelnut”) but I truly think even those who aren’t familiar with the band would greatly enjoy this CD. Pick one up at your local CD shop ASAP.
