PhotoHunt 117: Pointed

PhotoHunt

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Pointed” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. I had many possible choices for this week’s photohunt and after careful consideration I finally chose the following…

Case Bowie Knife

That is a genuine, hand-crafted, made in the U.S.A. Case Bowie Knife. It is one of several Bowie knives in my knife collection. I’ve had it for almost 20 years now. The term Bowie knife refers to a style of knife designed by Colonel James “Jim” Bowie, who lived in Texas and initially made by Arkansas blacksmith James Black in December 1830. In actuality, Black created the first Bowie knife based upon a carved wood model created by Jim Bowie. Black produced the knife ordered by Bowie, however at the same time created another based on Bowie’s original design but with a sharpened edge on the curved top edge of the blade. Black offered Bowie his choice and Bowie chose the modified version. Bowie returned, with the Black-made knife, to Texas and was involved in a knife fight with three men who had been hired to kill him. Bowie killed the three would-be assassins with his new knife and the fame of the knife grew. Legend holds that one man was almost decapitated, the second was disemboweled, and the third had his skull split open. This encounter brought immediate fame to the Bowie Knife and to James Black. From then on, any traveler passing down the Chihuahua Trail would stop at Black’s shop and ask for a knife “Like Bowie’s.” Eventually this was shortened to Bowie (pronounced “BOO-ee”) Knife. Colonel Jim Bowie died at the Battle of the Alamo five years later and both he and his knife became immensely famous. Black’s skill was without peer. Black’s method was a secret he kept to himself. He tempered his blades behind a leather curtain, shielded from the curious eyes of onlookers and even those of his own partners. Case’s Bowie knives follow the basic known designs of Jim Bowie and James Black.
