The Dixie Chicks
Let’s see…insult the President of the United States on foreign soil…insult Texans in the process…insult country music fans in general…release a new album with very little country influence…and when you’re forced to cancel and postpone dates on the tour supporting the album go into denial mode by making claims that the changes are simply to “accommodate demand.”
Uh, gals? No one, other than you three, is surprised.
When you have to cancel dates in 14 cities (including dates in Kansas City, Memphis, Houston and Knoxville) that’s something we in the blogosphere refer to as a clue. But apparently the DC’s remain clueless since they (mainly Natalie Maines) keep publically denying it has anything to do with all the insults they’ve managed to toss out. The fact is the Dixie Chicks can no longer sustain the level of ticket sales they used to command early on. They’ve announced additional concert dates will be added, but it’s doubtful it will make up for the lack of sales now as long as those added concert dates remain in the United States. They will probably have to expand their tour to European venues that support Bush-bashing and American-insulting artists like the DC’s. I can’t see the Dixie Chicks ever rising back to their once lofty position in the music world unless they do something major to appease those they’ve manage to alienate in the USA. Otherwise, they will merely slide into obscurity, be dropped from their label and be reduced to working county fairs and be the subject of a future “whatever happened to…” segment on CMT.
