A Thought On A Specific Christmas Song
As I wrote about yesterday, I put over a thousand of Christmas songs on my iPod and listened to the Christmas music at work. As I listened, one particular song, “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”, gave me a thought. Here’s the verse that struck me as odd:
Toasting marshmallows isn’t that uncommon at Christmas nor is caroling in the snow (if it snowed at all - I live in the deep south - snow doesn’t happen at Christmas).
But scary ghost stories? Did the composer get Christmas confused with Halloween? I just can’t picture sitting around the hearth, next to a nice warm fire and instead of reading from the Bible about the birth of Jesus or even reading “Twas The Night Before Christmas” people sit around and tell ghost stories! Good grief!
I know some are going to point out that there are ghosts in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” but that story really isn’t scary and it’s only one story. The song claims a Christmas tradition is telling “scary ghost stories.” So what scary ghost stories were told at Christmas when you were a kid?

The lying Judge Cheryl Alemán
It is a disgrace and a travesty that its taken almost two years or longer for justice to be done. Judges should not be above the law, but held to a higher standard.

People long, long ago (before TV and radio) frequently passed the evenings telling stories, and ghost/scary stories have always been popular. I guess humans have always liked being scared as long as they know they are safe. My source for this is my grandmother who was born in 1876 in Machias, NY. We lived with her for years and two or three nights a week, we would have an “oldtime night”. Most of the time Grandma would tell stories of her childhood and growing up, and my brothers and I were fascinated with those tales. Sometimes, we would read a book, each person reading a page then passing the book to the next person. Very rarely, Grandma would tell a ghost story, but I don’t remember them (I don’t really like them), but she said they were always the favorite kind of story back in her day.
Personally, I was born after TV and radio, was taught I didn’t have to be dependent on either, and do not recall ever hearing ghost stories as a part of Christmas.

Unfortunately, what I’ve read on the wires is Bush hyping the bomb threat, which apparently isn’t as imminent as we thought. But is gloating and pointing fingers the right way the approach this issue, given the rest of the available data?

Kevin, I know the Dickens tale very well and know of the ghosts but the tongue-in-cheek point I was making is that even when the song was originally composed, sitting around telling ghost stories wasn’t (and still isn’t) a Christmas tradition.
December 7th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
If you think A Christmas Carol by Dickens isn’t scary, then you havent read the original work.
