The Smithereens — Christmas With The Smithereens
I’m always on the lookout for additions to my Christmas CD collection and although tighter than normal finances limited my purchases, I have made some additions this year. Some of them are brand new 2007 releases while most are used CDs released in years past that I previously did not have in my collection.
Periodically during this Christmas season, I’m going to post my thoughts about some of those Christmas CDs. Don’t take them as reviews but I will give my unabashed opinion. However don’t expect nor anticipate anything truly objective.

This year marked the release of the first Christmas CD from one of my favorite bands, The Smithereens. Several years ago, one Christmas song, “Waking Up On Christmas Morning,” was released on an assorted artists CD entitled “Christmas Rocks!” and I really liked the song. That particular song is included on the current release, “Christmas With The Smithereens” and I can’t really tell for sure whether it’s the same song remastered or if they re-recorded it specifically for the new CD. I’m leaning towards the former, but I could be wrong. The album is a fairly even mix of original Christmas song along with covers of mostly Christmas classics. One cover surprised me. It’s the song “Christmas” from the The Who’s “Tommy.” Not exactly a song about Christmas most people think about but it qualifies. As far as I can tell, they are the first band to cover that particular song on a Christmas album.
Another cool (jazzy cool) cover tune is The Smithereens’ homage to Art Carney’s “Twas The Night Before Christmas” which is done accompanied only by drums and jingle bells in a rhythmic hepcat style. I’ve enjoyed the Art Carney version and The Smithereens’ cover is equally wonderful.
The Smithereens’ “Christmas Time All Over The World” is similar in subject to the classic “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” in that it’s a warning to children to behave since Santa Claus is coming. But it goes farther and covers getting together with loved ones and friends as well. A great song.
I enjoy each song on this album and feel each one is a winner. It’s a great rock-n-roll Christmas CD and I recommend it.
