Entomology Time: What IS This Critter? November 16th, 2006

Caterpillar which will become a Polyphemus moth
Caterpillar which will become a Polyphemus moth

This morning after coming home from dropping my wife off at work, I ran across this little creature crawling on the ground. It was about 2 inches long and neon yellow/green. Anyone know specifically what it is?

UPDATE: Lyle Buss from the Insect Identification Laboratory at the Entomology and Nematology Department (University of Florida) informed me:

It’s the Polyphemus moth, Antheraea polyphemus (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). Larvae feed on a variety of trees and shrubs, such as apple, ash, birch, dogwood, elm, hickory, maple, oak, rose, and willow. Adults are sometimes attracted to lights.

    Now we know.

    Polyphemus moth

Here’s what the moth looks like. According to what I found online, the Polyphemus Moth is one of the biggest moths found in the United States, growing up to a 5.5 inch wingspan. It has brownish-yellow wings with a black and white, wavy line on each. It has a small, mostly yellow eyespot on each forewing (front wings), and larger blue, black, and yellow eyespots on the hindwings. Underneath, the moths’ wings look like dead leaves. Polyphemus Moths are usually found in forests, but can also be seen in marshes and parks.

Liberal Smear Campaign In Full Swing November 15th, 2006

    Olbermann's Smear Campaign

non sequitur (non se·qui·tur) n. An inference or conclusion that does not follow from the premises or evidence. A statement that does not follow logically from what preceded it. (Source: American Heritage Dictionary)

Chad Conrad Castagana, a Californian, was arrested recently on charges that he allegedly mailed a number of powdery letters to Keith Olbermann, Jon Stewart, Sumner Redstone, Nancy Pelosi, David Letterman, Chuck Schumer and others. And now the liberals are going absolutely batty (moonbatty?) trying to link conservatives to Castagana. And since there is no direct link available, many liberals are making up things in order to smear conservatives. The problem is, their explanations are nothing more than prime examples of non sequiturs. Brian Maloney of the Radio Equalizer has much more about the disgusting desperation libs are exhibiting with direct examples of their hysteria from such uber-libs as Huffington Post’s Steve Young, liberal site The Raw Story and (not surprising) MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann.

Robert Cox of OlbermannWatch.com has written an open letter to Keith Olbermann which shines the light of truth upon Olbermann’s hypocrisy. Here’s a portion:

“You have been highly critical of Rush Limabugh [sic] and President Bush. About the same time Castagana was sending his letter to you, Michael Lee Braun sent a fake anthrax letter to conservative talk show host Tom Sullivan, a regular guest host on the Rush Limbaugh show. Braun was arrested by the same Joint Terrorism Task Force who caught Castagana and has now been indicted for making threats against President Bush and mailing letters containing an unknown, white powder. By the logic which you now use to accuse Malkin and other right-wing bloggers, aren’t you directly responsible for Braun’s actions?”

Olbermann is too cowardly to respond. This is just another example why Keith Olbermann is a disgusting shred of human debris and deserves only scorn.

Voting begins for the 2006 Weblog Awards on December 7th and ends on December 15th. I most humbly ask that you vote for my blog if I am named as a finalist in one or more of the following three categories: Best of the Top 501 – 1000 Blogs (this blog has a current rank [as of this entry] of 556 in the TTLB Ecosystem), Best Conservative Blog and Best Individual Blog. I really would appreciate your vote. Thank you.

UPDATE: Oh well, I wasn’t named a finalist in any category so don’t bother with any voting for my blog. I am definitely disappointed but not discouraged.

I TOLD YOU SO! Democrats’ Cut-And-Run Plans In The Works November 12th, 2006

I have been saying all along that if the Democrats took control of both the House and Senate one of the first things they would do is to work out a plan to withdraw the troops from Iraq before the job is finished leaving the Iraqi government vulnerable to collapse, allowing Iran to invade and empowering terrorists all over the world. They took power through the elections and sure enough, even though many promised they wouldn’t set a withdrawal, they lied and are now working to come up with such a timetable. Preferably to begin in four to six months. Stop The ACLU has more details as does Michelle Malkin.

My First Caption Contest Win! Yippee! November 12th, 2006

One of the blogs I routinely visit and enjoy reading is The Right Place and they have a weekly caption contest. I’ve been entering captions for a while now and having loads of fun. Sometimes my submitted captions even make it to the Top 10. Well, in this instance, with the photograph seen above, I won for the first time (also placed 10th in the same contest as well). So I’m giving myself a little personal pat on the back.

Israel “Bruddah Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole — Facing Future November 12th, 2006

    Israel 'Bruddah Iz' Kamakawiwo'ole

Several years ago, one of the anchors at WCTV was making a music video as a personal gift to his parents and inlaws featuring his children. The music he was using was this wonderful, soothing rendition of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” with “What A Wonderful World” worked into it. It was a beautiful song but he didn’t know who did it. You’ve probably heard it being used in the past couple of years in at least three national television commercials that I can think of. After doing some research, I discovered the song to be the work of a fantastic Hawaiian artist, Israel “Bruddah Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole. I found out while listening to Whole Wheat Radio online that it’s on the soundtrack to the movie “Meet Joe Black.” I couldn’t find that CD locally at the time but I did find a copy of “Facing Future” at a local CD shop. I’m glad I found Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s album instead of the soundtrack because if I didn’t, I would have missed out on some incredibly beautiful music. For me, every single song on “Facing Future” is a winner and expresses the joy and soul of “Bruddah Iz.” I really can’t adequately describe his style nor how his music sounds. I will say if you think it’s all like Don Ho then you’re truly missing the boat. It’s nothing like that. It’s uniquely “Bruddah Iz” (for lack of a better descriptive term). It’s romantic, relaxing, peaceful and melodic. It’s a musical sunset on Mākua Beach in Hawaii. It’s a joyous celebration of everything that makes Hawaiian music great. “Facing Future” is all of this and much more. No wonder that in 2005 the album was certified platinum by the RIAA for sales of over 1 million units. From 1976 throughout the 1980′s Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was a member of the popular Hawaiian singing group Mākaha Sons of Ni’ihau which in that time span released ten albums. After that, he decided upon a solo career which brought him much regional success. In 1993 “Facing Future”, his first solo album, was released. “Facing Future” was followed by another four remarkable recordings, “E Ala E” (1995), “N Dis Life” (1996), “IZ In Concert: The Man And His Music” (1998), and “Alone In IZ World” (2001). Throughout the later part of his life, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was morbidly obese and at one point carried over 750 pounds on his 6 ft. 2 in. frame (I can relate somewhat – at one point before my gastric bypass surgery I was carrying almost 420 pounds on my 5 ft. 7 in. frame). As a result of his obesity he underwent several hospitalizations and died of weight-related respiratory illness on June 26, 1997 at the age of 38. The Hawaii State flag flew at half-mast throughout the day in his honor. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole lay in state in Honolulu at the Capitol building and was only the third person in Hawaiian history to have this honor bestowed. You can find all of Iz’s CD’s at Mountain Apple Company and I wholeheartedly recommend each and every one of his CD’s.

Kelly McGuire — Redfish Island November 12th, 2006

    Kelly McGuire -- Redfish Island

I’m a parrothead. I’ve been a parrothead for a long, long time. I also enjoy music from those inspired by or leaning towards the same sort of feeling that Jimmy Buffett’s music contains. Kelly McGuire is one of those artists who has that parrothead escapism Buffett imparts via his music. Redfish Island is McGuire’s offering of escapism and romanticism unique in of itself. Melodic and hypnotic, McGuire’s songs take the listener on mental vacations (“Sailing Across The Gulf On My Own” & “Pensacola In The Morning”) and creates romantic moods (“Hurricane” & “Girls Of The Island”). Even one song, “Major Doubts About Waterspouts” seems to be an answer song to Buffett’s “Trying To Reason With Hurricane Season.” It even has that Buffett-esque Carribean flair. You can find Redfish Island available on Kelly McGuire’s website as well as CDBaby.

More Major Losses For Terminally Ill Air America November 11th, 2006

    Air American That's All Folks

Brian Maloney over at The Radio Equalizer documents more losses for the struggling liberal radio network Air America. This time they are losing stations in some larger markets. How long before Air America Radio finally goes silent? It’s only a matter of time. Probably sometime in 2007.

Pelosi To Clean Up Congressional Corruption? Not Bloody Likely. November 9th, 2006

    Nancy Pelosi

Texas Rainmaker brings up an interesting point concerning Nancy Pelosi’s future job responsibilities as Speaker of the House. Will she rid the Democratic corruption already present? To whit (from Texas Rainmaker):

Soon-to-be-Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi said Democrats “intend to lead the most honest, the most open and the most ethical Congress in history.” Interestingly, this reminds me of another newly elected Democrat back in 1992 that promised “the most ethical Administration in the history of the Republic.”

Let’s just take a look at Pelosi’s “honest, ethical” Congress.

It includes William Jefferson (assuming he wins his December 9th runoff), the Democrat who hid $90,000 in bribery cash in his freezer at home.

It includes the soon-to-be Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who enjoys illegally using campaign donations, shady million dollar land deals, pushing legislation through Congress to benefit his 4 lobbyist sons, breaking campaign finance laws, and aiding clients of Jack Abramoff.

It will include Alcee Hastings, who was convicted by the U.S. House on two Articles of Impeachment: perjury and conspiracy to obtain a bribe. He’s so “honest and ethical” that it’s rumored Pelosi will get him to Chair the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

It includes Congressmen who run gay prostitution services from their Capitol Hill apartments, engage in public corruption and love to pass legislation benefitting family members and crash their cars while drinking and driving and kill others.

It includes dozens who associated with or helped Jack Abramoff and his clients.

It includes several who like to assault security personnel.

And of course, the new leader of this “honest, ethical” Congress, herself, enjoys skirting finance laws every now and then. Not to mention her fondness for providing political favors to top donors.

If Pelosi’s party is hellbent on “draining the swamp” of Congressional corruption, they better put on some lifejackets themselves.

Welcome to a new election with the same old results.

I really have nothing to add. Texas Rainmaker made the point so well, with documentation, that there’s nothing I can add. Good job, Texas Rainmaker.

The Moonbattery Grows — Case In Point: Charles Rangel’s Prejudice November 9th, 2006

    Charles Rangel

“A southern man don’t need him around anyhow”
    –Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Sweet Home Alabama”

The liberal Democrats just won the House & Senate and already many in their ranks are dropping the guise of moderation and showing their true nature. Case in point; Charles Rangel’s recent comment:

“Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?”

Charles Rangel, who will take over the Ways and Means Committee, opens his mouth and inserts his foot. He’s frustrated because he feels New York doesn’t get enough Federal money while Mississippi gets too much?!?

Go ahead Charlie, keep it up. Piss off the southerners. Your memory must be limited if you don’t remember the “solid South” of the 1980′s that ensured Reagan’s domination in the White House. Yeah, keep insulting southerners, Charlie. We’re nothing but a bunch of redneck hicks all living in single-wide mobile homes, chewing tobacco and driving run-down pickup trucks. Yeah, Charlie, keep it up, my friend. It’s going to come back to bite you and your liberal colleagues in the ass if you keep insulting southerners like myself. And keep in mind folks, I’m a conservative DEMOCRAT. There’s a helluva lot of us in the south, Mr. Rangel and you are either unaware or ignorant concerning our existance. Also we’re educated, well-read, well-informed…and WE VOTE. [For the sake of full disclosure, I was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, lived in Cleveland, Mississippi until 1976 and then lived in Waynesboro, Mississippi until I graduated from Mississippi State University in 1986. I was married in Gulfport, Mississippi (my wife's hometown). Our first residency was in Long Beach, Mississippi. I still have family and friends all across Mississippi to this day.]

We won’t forget your insults and hatred, Charlie.

UPDATE: Rep. Chip Pickering, who represents the 3rd District of Mississippi, replies. An excerpt:

“From the Coast to the Delta to the Pinebelt to the Hills and across Mississippi, there is beauty in every city, charity in every heart, love in every church, and majesty in every countryside. When I travel this state I see it in the resolute handshakes, the hospitable smiles, and the sincere prayers of our neighbors: we love Mississippi and we are proud and happy to live here,” Pickering said.

Pickering concluded, “Last year, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Mississippi Coast. We have been working hard not only to rebuild our own homes and communities, but also to repair and protect the network of refineries, pipelines, and transmission grids that supply energy, gas, and oil to the rest of the country, including New York. If Mr. Rangel believes those efforts required more than our fair share of federal money, he is welcome to send that energy back to our state and find an alternative supply…

UPDATE #2: Elbert Garcia, Rangel’s press secretary in New York, said Rangel had received calls Thursday about the Mississippi quote. Garcia e-mailed The Associated Press a response from Rangel:

“I certainly don’t mean to offend anyone. I just love New York so much that I can’t understand why everyone wouldn’t want to live here.”

Lame, Charlie, very lame. Of course you meant it as an insult. Now you’re desperately trying to weasel your way out of it. This is on the same low level as John Kerry’s non-apology apology. Give it up, Charlie. Nothing you can offer up at this point will counteract your foolish insult. The best advice anyone can give you at this point is just to shut up, move on and watch what you say much closer from now on. But I betcha you’ll screw up again in the future. You can’t help yourself. You have a big mouth, kiddo. Foot-in-mouth syndrome. Thanks for dropping your mask of civility and showing the world your true nature as the slimy individual you are. Good job, Charlie, good job.

A tip o’ the hat to Michelle Malkin for the heads up on this as well as the Pickering reply.

The Future Of Conservative Talk Radio (Post-2006 Elections) November 8th, 2006
