I’ve been a huge Webb Wilder fan ever since I saw him featured on an MTV segment many years ago about the Austin music festival. Enjoy the videos and remember the Webb Wilder credo:
WORK HARD
ROCK HARD
EAT HARD
SLEEP HARD
GROW BIG
WEAR GLASSES IF YOU NEED ‘EM
Webb Wilder — Human Cannonball
My favorite Webb Wilder song. It is a bit different than what is on the CD.
Webb Wilder — Too Much To Dream
A trippy vid.

I’ve been a lifelong Dodger fan even though I never got to watch a Dodgers game in person. It wasn’t surprising that I ended up a Dodgers fan. When I was a little kid, I played baseball in the city league. And during those years in Cleveland, Mississippi I ended up on either a team named for the Dodgers or the Yankees. Kind of ironic. The only exception was my final year in Cleveland (1976) when I played for the Reds. The initial reason I chose the Dodgers as my favorite team at such a young age was that blue was my favorite color. Keep in mind, I was just a kid. Anyway, I grew up watching the Dodgers play fairly often on NBC’s Game Of The Week with Tommy Lasorda managing and my favorite player, Steve Garvey, playing first base (my position on the city league team). Vin Scully would call the game along with Joe Garagiola.
The Dodgers spent spring training in Vero Beach at a complex called Dodgertown each springtime for sixty years but this is the last spring training they will use the facility. Starting next year they will be training in Arizona trading the Grapefuit League for the Cactus League. Lasorda has been coming to Dodgertown with the Dodgers for 59 of those years. In the final game at Dodgertown, Lasorda was filling in as manager while current Dodger manager Joe Torre (I still am not used to reading that) was in Japan with some of the Dodgers playing exhibition games there. T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times has written a bittersweet article about that final game and what occurred spontaneously. Here’s a portion of that article:
And when it was all over, the players leaving after a 12-10 loss to the Houston Astros, Lasorda lingered at home plate.
As he began to walk down the right-field line, every step appearing to be a chore, something almost chilling on a hot day began to take shape.
Somewhere beyond first base he looked up, and he saw it, too, Dodgers players standing in a long line, two-by-two across from each other, bats raised above their heads as if they were crossing swords in honor of a military hero.
And as he walked down the tunnel, he shook each of their hands, a bunch of kids taking it upon themselves without a call to any of their agents to honor an 80-year-old man.
A few minutes later, after making it to the clubhouse, Lasorda cried.
“A lot of amazing things have happened to me in my life,” he said. “But what those players did for me with the bats is something I’ll never forget.”
They hugged Lasorda, and lined up to have him autograph their baseball caps with date and time.
I’ve lived in northwest Florida for the past 20 years and was always hoping to go down to Vero Beach to see the Dodgers at spring training and hopefully get Tommy Lasorda’s autograph on a baseball but I never had that pleasure always due to lack of money. But even though I live hundreds of miles away from Dodgertown, I will miss the Dodgers coming to Florida each spring.

Gary Hart, wrestling manager extraordinaire, passed away Sunday afternoon at his home in Euless, Texas. He had appeared in Allentown, Pennsylvania on Saturday for an autograph session billed as a “World Class Ringside Reunion”. As of this time the cause of his death is unknown. He was 66.
Gary Hart began his career as a wrestler but I first saw him in a managerial roles leading the likes of the Great Kabuki and Abdullah the Butcher. Most of the time, Hart was the heel and his interviews were articulate and often brief with a quiet intensity accentuated by his appearance. He just looked like he’d just as soon reach through the TV screen and grab you by the throat if you didn’t pay attention. As far as I can recall, he never screamed or yelled during his interviews and promos. He didn’t have to. He had the psychology of selling the match, his wrestler, his opponent or whatever he wanted to sell to an artform few in the wrestling business ever achieved.
My condolences go out to Gary Hart’s family and friends. He definitely was a legend.

A tip o’ the ballcap to Hip And Thigh for the heads up on this.”
Also while perusing the Hip And Thigh blog, I saw their link to possibly some of the worst playground equipment/sculptures ever.

The cult known as Scientology, founded by hack sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, continues to attempt to suppress dissention via intimidation in many different forms. This has been well documented over the years. The website, xenu.net has a lot of very eye-opening information that the Church of Scientology wouldn’t want you to read (plus it would make Tom Cruise and John Travolta have hissy fits). I’m not a fan of L. Ron Hubbard nor am I interested in pro-Scientology garbage but anything that can make Cruise and/or Travolta (or most Scientologists in general) go into conniptions is a good thing. So if you have a little time and like to read what some Scientology wackos are up to (who make liberal moonbats look tame in comparison) check out xenu.net as well as the other site listed in the graphic above. Also, the group known as Anonymous (see photo of their protest below) will have worldwide protests against Scientology today (click here for pictures from their February 10, 2008 worldwide protests). I’m curious to see if any video will be posted.

I found out yesterday that Dave Stevens, comic book writer and artist extraordinaire passed away Monday due to complications of leukemia. He was 52. He is famous for his “good girl art”, classic pin-up style drawings and paintings, an interest which led to him almost single-handedly resurrecting the career of 1950s pin-up queen Bettie Page. One of his best known titles was “The Rocketeer” a comic book series that eventually was transformed into a major motion picture. Stevens is survived by his mother and a sister. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Texas Fred is out of the hospital, back home and has resumed blogging. He has full details of what happened. Drop by his blog and welcome him back.
One of the blogs I regularly visit is Texas Fred’s which has been on a self-imposed hiatus since February 26th due to political burnout. I just found out via An Ol’ Broad’s Rambling that Fred has been in the hospital. From Mrs. Texas Fred:
Fred is out of ICU. He was put in a room this afternoon. He is in a lot better shape than he was when he went in. His sugars are not under control but they are better than they were. He is on a liquid diet and it doesn’t include a beer or margarita. I still dont know when they plan on letting him out. His pancreas was severely inflamed and they want to get the inflammation down and have a stress test done before they can remove the gallbladder to see if his heart can withstand the surgery. I will keep you all posted on his progress. I appreciate all your thoughts, prayers and emails as you don’t know how much it means to him and me.
Thanks so much!
Please keep Texas Fred and his family in your prayers and thoughts.

The latest PhotoHunt category from tnchick.com is “Different” which can be interpreted as one sees fit. This is tnchick’s 100th PhotoHunt. I look forward to see how others interpret this one. I could have gone several different ways with this but I chose to show two examples of things done a little different than the norm.
The home above is one of many along U.S. Highway 98 in the Florida Panhandle. The house itself isn’t what’s different, but what’s in the front yard.
That’s not a closeup of a baseball someone left lying around but a 5-foot tall baseball with the name of the house — “Ray’s Bay’s Ball.” It’s not unusual for people to name their houses along the beaches and bayfronts. Many times it’s a clever play on works (“Porpoise In Mind”). Sometimes a reference to a Jimmy Buffett tune (“Changes In Latitudes”). Usually it has a nautical or beach connection of some sort. Whomever owns this bayfront home decided to go a different way.
On the south side of Tallahassee is a locally owned business called “The Wilderness Way.” Now when I think of the wilderness, I can’t help but picturing…
…a purple gorilla holding a kayak?!? Okay, that’s definitely different. AND eye-catching. Which achieves the purpose of getting noticed. Looks like an offspring of “Grape Ape”, a cartoon character from the mid to late 1970′s.
I hope you enjoyed your visit to my humble blog. I also hope you’ll leave a comment on this post and maybe take a look around the blog in general.
